Summary: Zaizen has returned! Time to introduce him to the keyboard/composer!

Dinner eaten, dishes washed, homework done and rooms tidied, the twins raced back to the main school building to meet up with Zaizen and Ohtori. Time for band practice! They were still missing Irie, but he wasn’t back from holiday yet. For now, it was just them. How wonderful! Skidding to a stop, they opened the door to the music room and made a beeline for their locker that held their guitars and amps. “This is going to be so epic!” they chorused, as they got ready for the others.

Ohtori was rushing down the hall corridor, lugging his violin case, a case of fruit drinks, and his music sheets, the picture of organized chaos as he made his way to the music room. Opening the door, he spotted the twins and smiled brightly to them both. “Do you have any idea how hard it is composing for a full band with drums and saxophone?” His smile turned to a grin as he placed the new sheets on the piano with a playful flourish. “It’s the best!”

Zaizen, on the other hand, was lazily making his way over to the music room, letting out a long yawn as he entered the hallway. Already he could hear the excited chatter coming from inside the room, not even needing his powers to pick it up. Entering the room, their animated faces made their emotions even more apparent. They were gathered around the piano like kids to a toy box; like it was toddler’s day all over again. Zaizen shuddered at the memory.

The less enthused teen strolled over to the piano, looking over the twins’ shoulders to scan the sheet music splayed on the top.

“Zaizen!” Both twins turned to look at him as he peered over their shoulders. “Have you two met yet?” Ryou asked. “Zaizen Hikaru, this is Ohtori Choutarou. Ohtori-kun, this is Zaikun. He’s our drummer, the one we’ve been waiting for.” Atsushi hated introductions still, which fortunately amused Ryou.

“Look, Choutarou-kun already has music composed for us!” Atsushi said. He was already strumming through some of the notes. “The entire school is going to be utterly amazed at our Awesomeness!”

“But we need a band name that isn’t, ‘We Are Awesome,’” Ryou said with a laugh.

Ohtori smiled faintly at the newcomer and nodded in acknowledgement. "Nice to meet you," he beamed and extended a hand cheerfully, not sure what to make of the other boy quite yet. "I'm not really overly familiar with the drums, so it might not be perfect. So if you want to change anything....please do. It was just an idea. And composition is a bit relaxing for me."

Zaizen nodded back, taking the other’s hand and giving it a light shake. “Some things here and there, but it doesn’t look too bad. We’ll just have to hear it,” he replied bluntly, side-stepping the other teen to put his stuff down then proceed to sit at his spot by the drums. Despite the less than warm introduction, Zaizen was actually pretty excited to start playing. True, some things needed to be changed, but for someone who knew little about drums, it was still a quality composition. “So, we starting or what?” he impatiently asked.

“Sure. Though you might need a copy of the music,” Atsushi pointed out, handing it to him. “Just so you know where to hit and all,” he said with a grin. “Oh! I just thought of a name for the band! How about, “RAGS to Riches?” He gave the other three a wide-eyed happy look as he hit a triumphant chord on his guitar.

Ohtori nodded and headed to the piano, carefully setting the new piece on the rest and stretching his fingers, warming up with a playful little jaunt. He was not entirely sure what to make of Zaizen, who seemed a bit more interested in music than socializing. Chuckling softly at the name of the band, he shrugged a bit. “It’s not bad. I’m not so good with names. We should ask Irie-san the next time we all practice together.”

“...Thanks.” Zaizen coughed, a bit embarrassed at his probably obvious excitement. He looked up at the name suggestion, commenting, “Better than the last one.” But he agreed with Ohtori. Maybe Irie-san had some other ideas. Turning his attention back to the sheet music, Zaizen began lightly practicing the beats, getting a feel for the music. It sounded even better than on paper, but he could only imagine how much better when they really played. “Ready?”

Ryou finished his fingering run-through and nodded. “Do you want part one or two, Atsushi?” he asked. Two parts for guitar, both different, as expected from Choutarou. The fingerings would be tricky in a couple of spots, but nothing out of their skill range, he was positive.

“Which one did you just go through?” Atsushi asked, running through the fingering himself. He cocked an eyebrow at his brother. “And you are all jealous you didn’t come up with such a great name,” he teased the other two. Waiting for Irie was fine, he was sure there was a better name, though they hadn’t been able to come up with one yet.

“Both,” Ryou admitted. He noticed that Atsushi had done the same. “Jan Ken Pon?” he offered. “Winner takes part one?”

Ohtori had made sure to make the two guitar parts as different as the boys playing them, even if they may have looked similar in so many ways, when they were played they were very different. Smiling a bit as they divvied up their parts, he leaned against the top of the piano, watching them. “I know. I did tell you I was bad with names. How about Wabisabi Wasabi?”

Seeing as they were still deciding on parts, Zaizen continued to practice. Either one of them could play any of the parts well. Hearing Ohtori’s suggestion, Zaizen paused for a bit, seriously considering it. “That one’s actually pretty good...” he mumbled seriously. Now he was conflicted.

The twins looked up from their game where they kept throwing the identical sign over and over. “We do like wasabi, but what is the wabisabi part for?” Ryou asked. “And would one of you pick the parts for us, or we’re going to be here all night.” Atsushi laughed and nodded his agreement.

Ohtori smiled a bit, looking at the twins and their strange matching gestures at each round of the game. “Wabisabi means beauty in imperfection.” Ohtori smiled slightly, “it’s a good principle. Something wonderful born of chaos....sort of like the band.”

“Ryou-san, part one. Atsushi-san, two.” Zaizen answered, lazily pointing a drumstick at each twin. “We’ve got till graduation to think of a name anyway.” he added, twirling the same drumstick in his hand. Neither of the names were really bad, and they were still leagues better than the last name.

Atsushi rolled his eyes. “You just said that because Ryou is older. Fine, I’ll play the second part.” Honestly, he didn’t mind, but if you couldn’t give your kouhai grief now and again, what was the fun of being a sempai? “That is a good principle, but the name is a bit easy to mix up, don’t you think?”

“As Zaizen said, we have until graduation to come up with something we all like,” Ryou said. He separated out the two scores and handed the second one to Atsushi. “Until then, let’s play.”

“That was sort of the idea, yes.” Ohtori hummed thoughtfully, “Like Manheim Steamroller or something. The name should stick out...” His fingers stilled on the keys, glancing at Zaizen and waiting out his cue, that was the drummer’s job, right? At least that was what his research on most bands had shown him, never being in one other than at school, and that was more of an orchestra....

Zaizen opened his mouth to comment back at Atsushi, but realizing what his intentions probably were, held back. Taking Ohtori’s glance as his cue, Zaizen clicked his drumsticks together four times before beginning the song.

It was a bit rough, but even if it was their first time playing it, it sounded right. Or rather, it felt right for Zaizen. Once he gained eye contact with Ohtori again, he gave him a more acknowledging nod, showing his approval.

“Ooo,” Atsushi crooned as they finished. “That...will be beautiful. Wow, Choutarou-kun, you write really well. It just...flowed. I’m just sorry that I messed up those two chords.”

“It was our first playthrough,” Ryou pointed out. He didn’t point out that Atsushi had messed up three or that he too had not been perfect. This was about building a band, not one upping each other, after all. “Any thoughts before we try it again, Chou-kun?” he asked. “Zaikun?”

Blushing darkly at the compliment, the pianist just offered a small sound of acknowledgment that the others seemed to like his song, even earning a slight nod from the drummer. “I was off on a few notes....and...it is a really technical piece. I thought it might be a fun challenge.” He hoped that the other boys appreciated challenges as much as he did. Perhaps he should have asked... “If you want to change anything, please feel free. Okay?”

“Well...” Zaizen started, before pointing out a few things. No major changes. Only small things like a change in tempo at one part, maybe a different beat over here and there, but all in all it was a good piece. Better than good, in fact, but Zaizen felt that Ohtori could probably do even better. At least he had that to look forward to.

“Why don’t we run through it again before we make any alterations,” Ryou suggested. “I have to admit, I was more concerned with getting it right to really pay much attention to if it was right, if you know what I mean. Now that I have the notes down, I’d like to play it again and see how it actually sounds.”

“Then take a break and analyze it?” Atsushi asked, strumming his guitar a little. “Makes sense to me. How about you two? Or are our ways too foreign for you?” He grinned at the others.

Nodding and taking a note of each change on his paper with a pen, he smiled slightly and hummed the tune, rather liking that Zaizen’s sound was a bit more edgy than what he had created, something he blamed on his classical training. The rock he did attempt was more of a hobby and self taught. Usually involving hours of studying music theory for each instrument the band added.

“I wrote down the changes, we can try it again and see what else needs changed, then start over.” Ohtori hummed happily as he put the pen behind his ear and cracked his knuckles, adjusting his posture at the same time. “You guys know I am just happy to have someone to play with for a change.”

Zaizen took a few sips from his bottle of water as he watched Ohtori apply the changes, glad that he wasn’t offended by his suggestions. Sitting back down with his drums, he looked over at the twins. “I didn’t make any changes to the guitars.” Yet, he thought to himself. “I’ll give my suggestions if you want them, but it’s up to you guys since you’re the guitarists. Same goes for you.” At the last part, he nodded at Ohtori. It also was a good idea for them to at least get the hang of the song first. He probably should have done the same, but the few changes made some of the other parts flow a little better for him.

“Naturally,” Ryou said, grinning at Zaizen. “This time through we’ll be able to concentrate on the actual music and not just on how we are playing it.” He shifted his grin to Ohtori. “We love playing with you, so no worries there, Chou-kun!”

“Absolutely,” Atsushi said, hanging off Ryou’s shoulder for a moment. “Now, if you would count us off, Zaikun, I want to play more!”

Beaming at the others, he turned back to face the keys, shuffling the papers once more before deciding that he knew the song well enough, and turned them away from him. Perhaps he would be more inspired without the papers in front of him. “Ready when you guys are.” He waited for the click of drumsticks to start them off.

Zaizen simply nodded before clicking his sticks together and starting up the piece. As they continued on with the song, a small satisfied smile formed on his face as he began to nod his head to the beat. Compared to their first run, this was much better. Imagine how much better they’d be after even more practice and some adjustments here and there. Atsushi and Ryou seemed to have adjusted quite a bit to the song and Choutarou was playing more freely. Putting the papers away probably helped with that.

“Much better!” the twins chorused as the last of the notes faded away. They grinned at one another, then bent their heads together over the music for a quick confab. After a couple of minutes of a mix of cat, Japanese and music, Ryou lifted his head and pointed out the changes that he and Atsushi recommended. “It’s a really good, solid song,” he said with a grin. “Just needs a few tweaks. Anything you would add, Zaikun?” he asked. He didn’t think Zaizen would have a lot to add to what they’d already covered, but if he did, it would undoubtedly be something unexpected that they couldn’t hear from their vantage point of being the ones playing that section.

Blushing at the compliment to the song, he glanced over at the tweaks and added a few changes to the master copy, humming thoughtfully as he adjusted the piano bits a little to make sure that everything matched up just so, he finally glanced back up at everyone. “After practice tonight, I’ll go through and make the changes on the main copy for everyone. Just let me know if you think of anything else.”

Zaizen listened to the the twins, nodding at the changes they made. When asked if he had any suggestions, he shook his head. “At the moment, no. Sounds pretty good to me.” Some of the things he had in mind the twins had already mentioned, the rest were ideas that didn’t even cross his mind. They were ideas he liked, though. “Tired yet, or can you handle another round?” he asked with a challenging smirk.

“Oh, we have stamina like you wouldn’t believe,” Ryou said, his own smirk a bit more wicked. “By all means, let’s play it again. Atsushi?”

“Right with you, Ryou-nii, right with you,” Atsushi said. His own smirk was more on the sultry side. “Chou-kun?”

Ohtori glanced up at Zaizen’s challenge and nodded his head slightly, cracking his knuckles and shoulders one by one, “I could do this all night.” But when the twins started in, first with Ryou’s line, and then the look Atsushi gave, his face heated up and he quickly edged closer to the piano, just to be safe. “Uh- y-yeah. Let’s go for it.”

Zaizen glanced over at the sudden change in tone from Choutarou, but it only took him a second to put that aside as something insignificant. He was just happy that they all agreed. Giving his sticks one more twirl in his hands, he brought them together for another three clicks.

Playing music was as fun as running through the snow as tigers and almost as fun as the twins other favorite activity. Being in sync with your bandmates, harmonizing, feeling the rush of the emotions evoked by the music...it was a truly uplifting and profoundly enjoyable experience. Losing themselves to the moment, both Ryou and Atsushi threw themselves into their playing.

Ohtori couldn’t help grinning as they started again, knowing they sounded good. While in many ways he was uncertain of himself, when it came to music he had no sense of self-consciousness or fear. Just creation. He beamed at the others, glad the twins had behaved themselves when he had been awkward moments before, and Zaizen was exactly what they needed to make this band work. Now to get Irie in on this too.
