He knew it was childish; hating Valentine’s day. But, he had a better reason than most to hate the holiday that was emblazoned with pinks and reds, hearts and lace, and an obnoxious little cherub in a diaper armed with a potentially deadly weapon. Oh no, he hated it for a completely different reason. It was his birthday. Birthdays alone were embarrassing in his mind, at least for him. They were usually loud, with too many people eating far too much. Then there was the awkward protocols of receiving gifts and cards from friends and loved ones, while the gesture itself was kind and generous...he always felt awkward getting presents. He could never really properly express the gratitude, and they were usually frivolous and unnecessary things. Clutter. It was more a social protocol than actually wanting to give gifts, something people were oddly enough expected to do.

That in and of itself was bad enough, but combined with the lover’s holiday....it was sheer torture to him. So many of his gifts and cards were red and pink, filled with hearts or glitter. The girls naturally thought this was the cutest thing ever at his old school and loved to remind him that it was likely a sign he was meant to be an amazing boyfriend.

Ohtori rolled his eyes as he read another long email from his old classmates and friends, gushing about how popular he must be with the girls at his school. Closing the email, he had made up his mind. Today, he was not leaving his room. Come hell or high water.

Kabaji had struggled. For two weeks he had been living in the kitchen of the senior dorms. He had been trying hard to make the perfect chocolates. He had never given out chocolates for Valentine’s day. In fact, Kabaji had never celebrated it. Being a shut in, he had never gotten anything at all. Not even pity choco from his older sister. He didn’t know that it was girls that were supposed to give the sweets. He knew nothing of the rules at all. He only knew that you were supposed to give chocolate to the person you liked. He knew who that was. Sure, the twins and Zaizen and Sakaki-sensei and Atobe-sama all got candy too....but this was different. This was candy for Ohtori.

He held the small brown square shaped box in his hands. He had been looking for Ohtori all morning and heard that he was still in his room. Nervously, he approached the door and knocked a gently as possible. “C.....Choutarou...” He murmured, still in wonderment at getting to call the other boy by name.

He had started to distract himself with a new song for the band when he heard the soft knock and deep rumble of his first name from Kabaji on the other side. While he wanted to be a petulant brat for the day and pretend not to be in his room, the chirping from Vivaldi was going to be a dead giveaway. Eventually, he decided that he was being rather rude, and Kabaji had never done anything to give him a reason to be cross. It would be unfair to take his mood out on the other boy. “Just a second, Munehiro.”

He stood slowly and dusted off his school slacks before moving to the door from his previous location sprawled across the floor. Reaching the door, he undid the lock and quickly opened the door, revealing the other boy who was holding something. “Hey. Come on in.” He stepped back to allow his visitor space to come inside.

Had Ohtori waited a second longer, he might have heard the soft dejected tones of the boy walking away. But he had not and Kabaji instead stepped inside, aware that he was probably bothering Ohtori. The other had been busy with something. He was interrupting. He should be in classes, not bothering Ohtori with silly things like this. But he couldn’t back out now. he had tried so hard and his friends had been so patient with him, teaching him how.

“I...” He couldn’t really fidget like usual, since he held the box and he didn’t want to crush or ruin it with his nervousness. “I just wanted to....” He started down at the box and then at the pale haired boy who had invited him in. Were they good enough? Would Ohtori like them,? Would he accept them? Would he laugh? He wanted to quickly shift the box behind his back and pretend he had never brought it. But he was already over thinking things again.

“I wanted to give you this.” His hands thrust forward a little. “Please accept them.” He bowed so deeply over the box, he was nearly bent in half.

Looking at Kabaji with a calm smile as he entered the room, Ohtori carefully knelt down to pick up the papers and pens scattered across the floor where he had been working. It had occurred to him that he was playing hookey from classes today, But somehow, he could not bring himself to care about that. He did, however, care that Kabaji was skipping class. “Aren’t you supposed to be in class? You might get in trouble...” He chewed his lower lip a bit, eyes moving back to the other as he bowed deeply and held out the box for him.

“T-thank you.” He accepted the small box and examined it, happy to see that it was not pink or heart decorated. Not that he thought the other would be the type to use something so girly anyway. Instead, he had to wonder if it was for Valentine’s Day, or his birthday. The scent of chocolate was unmistakable. “I love chocolate. Sorry I didn’t get around to making you any....”

Kabaji straightened up when his box was taken. He felt relief. Even more because the other boy liked chocolate. He had made the right choice when he decided on that. He didn’t know it was also Ohtori’s birthday (the other boy had never told him when it was). He even smiled a little, still a bit shy about this all. Shy enough to stare at the carpet instead of at Ohtori.

“I...I know I should be...I...I’ve only missed class that one time...so I don’t think I’ll get...into too much trouble...” And if he did, he would accept his punishment with grace and understanding. “You don’t have to do that....I wanted to do this...I wanted to give this to you...And I...was going to give it to you...in classes but since you were there...” And now he was babbling a little. He sighed and mumbled. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Choutarou...”

He considered eating a piece of the chocolate, but still felt a bit bad about how moody he had started out, and the way he made Kabaji so nervous. Surely being around him had to be an uncomfortable thing. “You could always say you had a sore muscle or something and needed me to fix it if you are asked. I’d hate to get you in trouble because I ditched classes today.”

When Kabaji wished him a Happy Valentine’s day, he smiled a little bit. So he had no idea? Ohtori wondered if he should tell the other since they were getting pretty close. Instead, he carefully set the candy down and opened the box. “May I?”

He chewed on his lower lip a bit. He didn’t think lying was good. It wasn’t right to lie to the teachers. Eventually, they would find out that he had lied and then he might get into even more trouble. He didn’t want to get into even more trouble for this all. Instead, he decided that if anyone said anything, he would be truthful. He would also make sure that the teachers thought it was his idea. Ohtori had been in enough detentions. He could at least protect him from one more.

He glanced up at the other boy as he opened the box. He knew they weren’t the prettiest chocolates. They weren’t heart shaped. Some of them were rather like shapeless blobs of modern art. But he had tried so hard. The look didn’t matter, right? It was the taste that counted. “Y...you can. I...I made them for you, so please...” He just prayed that he had followed his friend’s instructions well enough not to make anything that would make the other boy sick.

Ohtori smiled slightly as he examined the interesting looking candies, none of them had a real shape to them, looking more like little strange aliens. The girls had always made theirs do pretty at his old school that he could only assume homemade meant by someone else in a store. Besides, these were special. Kabaji made them.

Picking a piece, he popped it into his mouth, finding himself surprised at the sweetness of the candy. He allowed it to melt in his mouth a moment before swallowing. "It's the best ever! Thank you!"

Instantly, his worry vanished and he smiled brightly at the other boy. “Really? I’m so relieved.” And he was. He was so so glad that they had turned out so well. He wondered if it was because of the feelings he had. His sister had always said that love was the best flavoring. He....l...really really liked the other boy, very much. “I’m glad. I’ve never given chocolates before, so I’m happy you got to have them.”

He remembered again that the other was homeschooled and he considered this for a moment before deciding what should be done. Moving carefully to the other boy’s side, he kissed him gently on the lips before pulling away. “Then I guess I will just have to try not to poison you on White Day.” He glanced at his desk thoughtfully for a moment, “Munehiro....I know it’s not a Valentine exactly, but....if you’d sit on my bed...I can play a song for you. Would that be okay?” He had recalled the other boy wanting to hear him play.

The kiss gave him the weirdest little tingles. It made his heartbeat quicken and his face go a little red. It made him want Ohtori do it again, but he knew the other wasn’t someone who initiated often, just like he was. So he was happy with what he got when he got it. He wouldn’t demand anything else from the paler teen. Still, he smiled, grin a little goofy, before sitting down.

Looking up, he nodded a little. “I...I would really like to.” He would definitely love to hear Ohtori play.

Once Kabaji was seated, grinning a bit oddly at him, Ohtori offered a faint smile and quickly prepared his violin, all the while wondering if he would get to cuddle with the larger boy again. Once he had his violin in hand, he stood tall and smiled brightly, "then this is for you."

He then played a sweet little number for the other, never missing a key, completely from memory.

He was amazed and felt a little spoiled. He was getting a private concert. Even if it was one song, it was the best song he had ever heard. Even sweeter was the fact that he thought that Vavaldi sung along a little. He smiled more and clapped softly when the other finished. “That was amazing.”

Finishing the song, he carefully cradled his violin in his arms and sat next to the other boy on his bed and smiled slightly. "Sorry it's not chocolates or something like that....I have a long standing vendetta with the holiday."

When Ohtori sat down, Kabaji found himself leaning against him slightly. He knew he was heavy, so he didn’t lean too hard. Just enough to get some skin to skin contact, arm brushing against arm. “N...no...it was beautiful and perfect...it...it’s the best Valentine’s gift I’ve ever gotten.” It was the only one, but he didn’t want to go there. Even if he did get something later on, this would still be the greatest gift ever. “And...I’m sorry...I’m sorry that you don’t like the holiday...I...I’ll try to remember it...for next year...”

Feeling the other lean against him, he rested a hand on a muscled thigh gently and patted his leg reassuringly. "I can learn to like it. But it is a pretty lame day to share your birthday with, don't you think?"

Birthday? It was...Now Kabaji felt really bad. Here, he had made chocolate and missed the other’s important day. He wondered if he would have time to come up with something just as wonderful for his birthday. He knew he had the ability to make the other boy whatever he desired, but he didn’t want to offer it and make the other feel like he had to name something. It seemed the other was a bit uncomfortable with gift giving. “I...guess...” He supposed it did suck. His birthday was two days after New Years. On the third there were still many celebrations going on, but he couldn’t begin to imagine those born right on the date. “But...it means more presents?” He suggested, shyly.

“Kind of my deadly secret, I guess. See....some girls at my old school found out and they told everyone which is super embarrassing. Since everyone then thought I would be some sort of perfect boyfriend...and....” He considered how much he really wanted to explain. “And the problem with my mutation was before I learned some control, if someone touched me I would accidentally make them really sick...” He scratched at his cheek and shrugged at the other’s question. “Mostly Valentine’s with Love messages scratched out and my name written in. Or stuff with that little glitter that gets everywhere....” He was called the king of pixies at one point.

He scowled at that. He had an older sister, so he knew just how impossible it was to get glitter out of everything. It must have been truly horrific to have to walk around school all sparkly. He fidgeted a little and mumbled, ‘It I wrote you a valentine....I...I wouldn’t scratch anything out....” He looked up and hoped he hadn’t said anything too bold or embarrassing to Ohtori, since he was sort of admitting to his rather large crush in a way. He was smart enough not to voice his opinion that Ohtori was perfect and would make the most amazing boyfriend. “But, since...I missed your birthday....I...if you ever need anything...anything at all...” He was certain that the slightly shorter boy would know what it was he was offering.

"I-” Ohtori smiled slightly and leaned against the other, closer and closed his eyes. “I wouldn’t scratch anything out of your Valentine either if I made one for you.” He chuckled softly, “Valentine’s Day isn’t over. Maybe I can try to make you one if you want...” He had some art supplies and things around the room. He knew Kabaji had a crush on him, and he had a crush on the other as well. “And, really, just hanging out here with me is a good present. Really.” He kissed the other’s cheek gently.

He blushed brightly and carefully put one arm around the other boy’s shoulders, as if to keep him close. The grip was a loose one. He wouldn’t force Ohtori to stay put, but he hoped he would. He shook his head a little. “N...No. You don’t...have to. You just...gave me...the best present. You...played violin for me...and...” He had gotten a kiss too. That, in his book, beat out any sort of chocolate or card or anything else. He smiled a little more and wondered what it would be like to actually be able to confess directly. He didn’t know if he had the courage to do it. Maybe he would ask Sakaki-sensei how it was done, since the man was helping him with his speaking as well as his powers.

“C...Choutarou...” He started and then couldn’t keep going on that first line of thought. “I hope that...if we get in trouble...we get to serve...detention together...”

Feeling a powerful arm wrap around his shoulders, he rested against the other. It was rare to ever be around someone bigger than he was, so it was pleasant feeling safe and protected. He smiled to himself, glad that the other liked his song. Finally, he extended a long arm and carefully placed his beloved violin safely on the small table by his bed. The sweet comment made his cheeks heat up, so he buried his face in a broad shoulder and laughed quietly.

"Be careful what you wish for. This school gives some pretty spectacular detentions."

Unconsciously, when the other boy hid his face, Kabaji turned to drop the lightest, sweetest kiss to the top of pale hair. He just couldn’t help it. Besides, he didn’t think that serving detention with Ohtori would be so bad. It meant that they would get to spend even more time together. Any time he could steal with his crush was considered good.

Deciding he rather liked this spot, he closed his eyes and smiled against Kabaji’s uniform top and snuggled in. It was just as much for comfort as to hide his face which always betrayed his thoughts. As Sakaki had said before, he was an abysmal liar. “Seriously. I don’t know if you got to see me shoveling snow in my underwear or not, boxers and some bandages are not exactly the right clothes for that task.” Though Sakaki had made it up to him, feeling a slight pang of loss for his crush/occasional partner, he pressed in as close to the other as he could without climbing onto his lap.

Honestly, Kabaji stated, “I knew you were out there but I didn’t look.” He hadn’t looked because if he had, he would have immediately run out there with a coat and a shovel and some cocoa for Ohtori. That would get the other boy into even more trouble and the punishment might be even worse because of it. That’s why Zaizen had refused to let him help in the alpaca stables. Because if he helped the punishment might get worse. Plus, as much as a very teenage male part of him wanted to very much see Ohtori in his underpants, he didn’t want it to be like that. He wanted it to be in a fully different manner. “I...still don’t think sharing one with you...would be that bad...”

“Thanks. Apparently some of my friends....our friends....took pictures.” Whether or not Atsushi was serious or not was another question. His face heated up, luckily still hidden in the other’s strong shoulder. Finally looking up when he was sure his face was at least somewhat normal again, he offered a small smile. “I guess at least the company would be nice, so it wouldn’t be too bad. But all the same, let’s avoid being punished in the first place.

Pictures? There were pictures? He...no...he didn’t dare. As much as part of him would want that sort of picture he would never do that to Ohtori. It was wrong. It was dirty. Ohtori was his angel and didn’t deserve such dirty thoughts directed towards his crush’s image. “Usu...I think...maybe...we can make something up... They would believe us...together...” Because though Kabaji didn’t lie, it was wrong, he would give it a heck of a try to protect Ohtori.

He hated lying. Ohtori chewed the inside of his cheek and took a deep breath, “just so you know. I am a really, really bad liar. No one ever believes me when I do it.” He leaned carefully against the other and considered their options carefully. What could they possibly say that would keep them out of trouble. He knew he could heal anything and there was rarely even a scar left when he was done. “One of us had a little accident. And the other helped.” He thought about it, “I got carried away in practice training and needed a hand. Would that work?”

He pulled Ohtori closer and muttered, “Or...I screwed up...I...the teachers know that I’m not too great...with my powers. If I don’t hold back, I can break a lot of things. If I write the wrong thing...bad things happen. You...you have more control than I do... Plus...that way...maybe the worst that would happen would be...supplemental lessons... for me...Sakaki-sensei is great. He...helps me...so much.” Unless he was talking with Ohtori. He didn’t do well at all around this boy. He always got so tongue tied. “So...that might work....right?”

“Are you sure you don’t mind? I wouldn’t want you to have to take more lessons on my account. As great as Sakaki-sensei is.” Ohtori considered this briefly, they would still need some sort of evidence. “Besides....if you have too many lessons, it makes it harder to go on another date....if you wanted to.”

He nodded adamantly. “Usu.” It was fine with him. He would rather he be the one to get in trouble. But the idea of another date made him warmer and he smiled more. “I...I do want to. I want to go...on a lot more dates with you.” He wanted to get past snuggling and over his own shyness so that he could hold Ohtori’s hand in public. To kiss him without blushing. To talk to him without falling all over himself. He wanted to be more. More for Ohtori. So that some day...he could be okay to be considered a boyfriend....though he wondered if Ohtori would even want him as something like that.

“Okay, because I want to go on more dates with you too.” Though he was still not ready to give up what he was with Kite, just yet. Maybe in time, if Kabaji ever wanted him to. Not that he wanted to think that far ahead, right now, he was happy with any chance to spend time with the other boy. Taking a deep breath, he stood up. “So evidence...could you make something like a glass vase or something easy to break?” Business first, then they could get back to snuggling, if Kabaji wanted.

He nodded and quietly murmured softly. “Please...stand back then...you and Vivaldi both......Because I...I will never forgive myself...if you get hurt...in the backlash...” Even if Ohtori was a healer, it wasn’t right to get him caught in the crossfires. He would rather be the one to get hurt. He just hoped it wouldn’t be too messy.

He shuffled over to the desk and picked up a pen. He had never done this on purpose. Ever. It was...scary. It was terrifying to actually do something wrong. He was so aware of what it might do. He took a breath and hoped he wasn’t shaking too much. Quietly, he started to write. He was sure the pen was shaking in his hand. He could do this...He could. “Please...don’t let this hurt him...” He whispered and then finished his terribly written kanji. His voice was even more hesitant when he spoke the word. “V...Vase...” He closed his eyes, aware of how it worked. It would either do nothing at all or...The vase appeared, as it should have. But then...unable to withstand the incorrectness, it shattered, exploding into a shower of glass fragments. He put his arms up to protect his face. He lowered them once the shower of glass had finally stopped.

“C...Choutarou....are you...okay?” It didn’t matter that his arms were bleeding. He cared more that the boy he liked might have been hurt.

Pulling a long piece of glass from his arm, a moment after the explosion, Ohtori made a face and rubbed at the bloodied spot, the wound already vanishing. “...are you okay?” If he had been stuck, there was no doubt in his mind that poor Kabaji had been hurt. “Vivaldi?” He saw the tiny bird hop up and down atop his bookshelf, looking a bit annoyed more than anything. Noting that Vivaldi was alright, he rushed back over to Kabaji and winced at the damage. “Well...it is definitely a believable accident scene...” He took the other’s arms and lead him back over to his bed, pushing him gently on his chest to sit down. “Let’s get you sorted out...” He kissed the other boy’s cheek reassuringly before kneeling in front of him and starting to carefully remove glass shards from his skin. “Sorry it hurts a bit...” He healed each mark as he worked, keeping a gentle hand on the other and rubbing his skin gently.

He didn’t really feel it. He could only sit there and look at Ohtori with a pleading look. Silently begging for him not to be hurt. He had seen blood but he wasn’t sure if it was his or not. But it seemed the other was worse for wear. He mumbled darkly, “Imagine if that had been...a car...or worse.” His power when done wrong would kill Kabaji dependant of the size refusing to be written into reality exploding in his face. “And...I’m sorry...it made such a mess...of your room...” He was sure this had to be the worst birthday ever for the pale boy. A ruined room and having to pull glass out of a close friend.

“I think we might have bigger issues if either one of us ever decided we needed a car in a bedroom.” Ohtori joked softly, carefully removing another shard of glass from Kabaji’s arm before healing it and kissing over the spot. He didn’t like the tone of the other’s voice right then at all. “So, just promise me that you won’t make anything bigger than a small bike in here and we’ll call it good.” He looked around his room, taking note of the bits of glass here and there. He then shrugged and looked up at the other boy again, “It’s been messier.” Simple as that, he smiled and pulled the last bit of glass out and kissed the healed injury. “There. All better.”

He laughed a little, if only to hide the small wince each time glass was dug out of him. It hurt. But there was something about Ohtori. He didn’t know if it was the healing touch or the kiss or what...but he felt so warm. So happy. Even though he had just gotten hurt. Even after it was over and they weren’t hurt anymore, he still felt that warmth. “T....thank you.... A....All better...thanks to you...” Of course, Kabaji would not let Ohtori clean the mess by himself. “I...I’ll get a broom....” He offered.

Releasing the other’s hand, he pressed one more light kiss on the top of his hand and sat on the bed beside him, leaning against a strong shoulder. He felt a bit sleepy suddenly from healing the other, reaching over, he snatched another chocolate from the box Kabaji had given him and allowed it to melt in his mouth. “ Mm? I can get it later if you don’t want to worry about it right now.”

He felt the pressure against his shoulder and decided that getting the broom could indeed wait. Instead, he happily let the other boy rest against him. He wondered if later on, he would get the courage to invite Ohtori to the party but he didn’t want the other to be bothered when he didn’t like this day. So instead, he decided to enjoy this small quiet time together.

When Kabaji remained, Ohtori closed his eyes and laced a hand with Kabaji’s, tangling their fingers together. This was nice, comfortable and warm. He would concern himself with cleaning up the mess before his roommate got back. Which would likely be late with that party that was supposed to be happening today to celebrate this annoying holiday. Maybe he would go out, if there was nothing interesting in the kitchen to eat, of course.
