Not Your Typical Love/Epic Story.
“Oh, wise muse, help me to make the right decision. Help me to pick the right one.”
The Vail fit perfectly on Danielle’s long, golden hair. Her aqua blue eyes lit up as she saw her reflection in the mirror. The old wedding gown was exactly what she wanted. From her head to her toes, she looked absolutely amazing. As her mom stood by the mirror, she looked back on her daughter’s life, and started to cry.
“Oh, mama. Don’t cry. I can’t look that bad.”
“No, no, my child. You look stunning. It’s just, I’m going to miss you so much when you leave and go with Skyler. You still haven’t told us where you are moving.”
“I know. And I will, once Skyler tells me.” She looked down and got lost in thoughts of Lane, the one who got away.
“What’s wrong my dear? Don’t you love Skyler?”
Danielle took a moment to gather up her thoughts on the very question she had been asking her since the day Skyler proposed. Once she was sure she knew what the answer was, she couldn’t seem to sum it up into words. She thought again for a moment or two, but was interrupted by a knock on the door. Her mother walked across the room to answer it.
“How are you, Danielle?” Her mother’s friend’s voice was very relaxing in moments like these.
“I’ll put on a pot of tea.” Her mother walked out of the room.
“So, tomorrow’s the big day. Are you sure you love him?” Ms. Rosemary had asked her this question before. She had never quite answered her, but now, as Danielle looked down at the mystical ring, she was ready.
“Ms. Rosemary, I have searched long and hard for what I thought I needed; Skyler. He’s perfect, with his soft brown hair, warm brown eyes, and great physic, but I think that’s what I want to love about him. There have been numerous rumors that he’s a god and he’s taking me away to Mount Olympus. I’m not meant to live there. It wasn’t written in the stars. Maybe that’s why he’s not telling me where we’re going to live after the wedding. But, I don’t want to marry a god. I want to marry a mortal. I want to marry Lane.”
“Danielle, who is this Lane you have been talking about so much?” Danielle looked down and sighed.
“Lane and I met about 5 years ago when the accident happened. He’s the reason I’m living today. He and Skyler were best friends. I was walking along the shore one day, gathering crabs for dinner, when Poseidon sent a furious wave my way and swallowed me whole. I couldn’t breathe. Then I see that I am in Hades. Just then the waters part and I see Skyler on the shore, and Lane rushing out to save me. I pass out and while I’m in a deep sleep, I can only see Lane.”
“Sounds like you had the hots for him right away, eh?”
“Very much so. But once Skyler found out my feelings toward Lane, he knew he had to fight for my love. Of course, I was attracted to Skyler, but not as much as Lane.
Lane and I courted for a few months, and I fell in love. I thought he did too. But one night he came to me. He seemed like he was in a daze, and I wasn’t sure what was wrong. With his soft blonde hair, and tearful green eyes, he told me that we couldn’t see each other again, for it wasn’t the wisest decision. I was hurt. Oh, was I hurt.” Danielle let out a longing sigh. Her eyes started to water, but she quickly drew back the tears and went on.
“Two days later, Skyler approached me and told me that I deserved better. The news somehow got to him. But, I didn’t seem to care. I was too depressed to carry on. I wanted to be with Lane. Some nights I would dream that Lane and I would get married and wake up with my mother’s old wedding gown on. A sign from the gods, you tell me.
“But, enough rambling on about the past. To answer your question, in my head, I love Skyler dearly. But in my heart, I love Lane too much to just let him walk out like he did. Tonight, I must leave and search for him. I haven’t talked to him in a week, and I’m beginning to worry.”
That night, Danielle went looking for Lane. Once she got to his cottage on the other side of the small town, she noticed the lights on. She also noticed that no one seemed to be in the house, but the door was unlocked. She walked in as to find some clue that Lane was there, or had been there.
She walked around the corner to his little room and there, on his bed, was Lane’s body. There was a lightening bolt scar across his stomach like a god had struck him down.
At this time, Danielle was motionless. The only thing that moved on her body were a few drops of saltwater that were beginning to run down her cheeks. She wanted to die. She found a note in his hand that read:
“You win. Take good care of Danielle. I love her more than anyone in the world. Burn in Hades, Skyler.”
Once she read the note, Danielle ran into the little kitchen, grabbed a nice, sharp knife, and laid down beside Lane on the bed. She prayed to the gods to forgive her, but she has made her choice. She took the painful point to her chest, and with one last gasping breath, took her life. As she slipped away, the mystical ring lit up. With her true love beside her, she left the hateful world behind her and went to search for Lane. This was just the beginning of her story.
