The World Plate #1 - Uruguay

Jul 01, 2010 20:37

inspired by the World Cup, this is a summertime project to make some different dishes. stuff i'm not normally inclined to make. 32 dishes from 32 countries. and no, i'm not making dishes from every country in the World Cup. i did some research on that. Slovenian food: not so good. here in the Chef Jakcass World Plate, there will most likely be far more Asian entries and far fewer Europeans. and everyone wins in this competition, especially sophonax who gets to eat all of this good stuff.

so lets start with one of the greatest sandwiches ever, which comes from Uruguay. granted, i will be pulling for Ghana in the game tomorrow, but i aint making any of that fufu blob shit that nagekinoki has told me about. Ghana can win on the pitch, since Uruguay wins in the kitchen.

i bought one of these once from a street vendor in New York City. it was absolutely amazing. to make one of these, you need to do the following:

1. fry up 3 pieces of bacon

2. fry up a thin steak in the bacon fat until just browned

3. spread
Uruguayans like their mayo, but i dont have a working blender at the moment to make any suck-free mayo. *sad* so instead, we'll go with the old standby around here, garlic tabasco butter. combine this and melt it up in a microwave and you're good to go.:
- 1/2 stick butter
- as much tabasco as you wish
- 6 cloves of crushed garlic

4. STACK IT!
how do you say 'dagwood' in Spanish? lay all of this out on paper or in foil, alternating between meats and veggies:
- french roll split in two
- spread (NO DRY BREAD!)
- lettuce darn it i forgot to buy the lettuce
- bacon
- layer of red onions
- steak
- thick layer of diced tomatoes
- 3 pieces of prosciutto (or some other ham)
- layer of bell peppers
- optional: the Uruguayans also like to put an egg on this sandwich, either fried or a hardboiled egg sliced. but KC doesnt do the eggs, so we went without.
- layer of mozzarella cheese

5. squush it together, roll it up tight, cut in two

perfect side dish for this would be garlic fries. a fresh green salad would be nice as well.

snarf! seriously, this is one of the best sandwiches in the history of the universe. and yeah, it is meaty. Uruguayans like their meat. this is a pic of a Uruguayan asado, a woodfire BBQ overload that is the traditional festive or event fare:
