And just saying this because I know lots of people give me that bewildered look behind their computers or whatever and think it's just lame...
I'm an international student. I study abroad, and now on an exchange abroad so I am spending way more money than anyone else in terms of education already.
I don't WANT to buy merchandise not because I'm stingy, because every bit of this money saved will help decrease the chances of me randomly splurging or losing the money. I NEED IT FOR EDUCATION.
Please also stop assuming that I am rich simply because I'm studying abroad, and exchanging from my uni abroad to Japan. Listen up carefully, it's firstly because I didn't have a choice. If you get kicked out from your own country, and in your country you can only survive well by obtaining a degree, you have no other option than to go overseas and get a degree. And when you do, you're not even guaranteed the best job, but when you return, or happen to want to go elsewhere, this degree will prove to be extremely useful and you won't be restricted to a few industries.
I am lucky enough that my mom is an intelligent woman who works harder than anyone else to support my brother and I, always placing education as the most important. I have never once doubted her choice and decisions and believe fully in her. She never told me to not buy merchandises, but this is my own decision to at least return her back the favor - not splurging so I can keep this pathway open. Instead of spending, I'd rather use it on education.
It doesn't mean I don't buy a single thing at all. I do, just not as often as some people do like ordering things once every week or something. (And then complaining about their bank accounts or cards looking pathetic. Why buy when you're already running low on funds?) I also only buy them when I am sure I will be able to use it for some time.
So, please stop assuming I am rich and can buy or do anything I want to. I'm not being stingy with money or anything, but personally I see that I can save quite a bit if I don't spend it on merchandise. Once I start working and have my own money to spend, I will definitely be purchasing some more that I think I want to have in the future.
rl,
obviously i think too much,
