I think you may be a writer, and being “selfish” doesn’t make it less so. Your
final essay isn’t just good because it’s about something compelling and painful;
it’s good because you find a good way to tell it and good language to tell it in. I
hope you will enter it in the composition essay contest. I suspect that your online
journal has been good preparation for the work you did in this class. A writer can
turn what seems like an alien assignment to her own purposes as you did in the
double portrait essay and can shape painful experience to give pleasure in reading,
as again you have done. I guess given the reason for your absences and what you
have made of that time, I can consider you “on assignment” and not deduct from the
grade you have earned on that account. I hope you will keep writing.
