Went to a New Year's party tonight. The more native Utahns tell me about Utah, the more I realized what a messed up place it is. They told me about how the Utah Valley south of Salt Lake is nicknamed "Happy Valley." It's "mind-bogglingly Mormon," three ex-Mormons told me, almost 80% Mormon with super-strict culture. It also has the highest antidepressant rate in the country, the highest use of gay porn and phone services, and the highest rape rate in the state with the highest rape rate in the country. Salt Lake is a lot better, but Utah is still not the place to be a woman. "Get pepper spray and don't walk alone," they advised. Scary, scary, scary.
