the larget of th planets, jupiter has been known since ancient times, its so large that over 1300 earths could fit within th planet. one of the outer planet, jupiter is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium. a day on jupiter is aboutnine hours and 55 minuts, whcih means jupiter rotates much faster than the earth. this rapid spin makes jupiter buldge at the equater. the diameter at the equator is 142,800 kilmoeters, while the diameter from north to suoth pole is only 133, 500 kilometers.
after the telescope was first invented, galileo used it in 1690 to observe th planets. he discovered four satellites in orbit around jupiter. these galilean satellites are th largest jupiter hs. amalthea is the cloest satellite to jupiter.
jupiter h sa strong magnetic field which traps chrged particles and forms them into belts surrnding the planet. these charged particles cause radiation which would be harmful to humans if they could get near jupiter.
the more prominent feature of jupiter is the great reds pot, found in the southern hemisphere. it was discovred by hooke in 1610 nd has been observed continuously since then. its giant storm thats ragd ever since it was first seen over 300 years ago.
the atmosphere on jupiter is much different from thtat of earth. its 89 percent hydrogen and 11 percent helium. at the tops of the clouds the temp is far below freezing. on jupiter the weather is tormy with strong winds blowing alternating, east/west band around the planet. these winds are as high s 250 kilometers per hour. at the line between an eastward and westward flow the shear causes storms to form.
discoveries show that jupiter has constant, gigantic lightning bolts in its atmosphere. these are like superbolts on earth and they give off much light and radio emissions called whistlers. the second discovery was the ring of jupiter. some scientists had insisted that voyager should look for it. everyone was very excited when the ring showed up on the monitors in mission control. the ring is mde up of particle sno large than the thickness of a human hair. bits this small dont reflect much light. thats why the ring had not been seen in the images taken from earth.
jupiter has a very strong magnetic field, the strongest of all the planets. such a field traps charged particles from the solar wind into a belt of radiation surrounding the planet. as these particles move in orbits along magnetic lines, some of them collide with the atmosphere and cause aurorae to form.
haha i cant believe i get more comments when i update about jupiter than when i actually update about something .___.
