Jongin and Baekhyun make the mutual decision to break up in the coffeehouse where they had met. The both of them had known that today was the day to end their relationship, and neither of them were really shocked when they had both said, to each other. After the relationship is officially over, Jongin remains at the coffeehouse and Baekhyun claims to have work to do, so he leaves Jongin with a small smile.
On his way back to his apartment complex, Baekhyun begins to cry. Through his tears, he orders Chinese takeout online via his smartphone. He prepays and writes in the special instructions, 'leave it outside of my apartment, 5D, and then leave immediately'. He walks into the building, still crying. He hides the lower half of his face with his hands. He's wearing mittens because it's winter. He sniffles in the elevator and pads towards his apartment. His takeout is at his door. He bends down, picks it up, unlocks the door to his apartment, and turns on the light. He closes the door, locking it behind him before he sits down on the couch with his takeout in his lap. He takes off his gloves and sets them on the cushion beside the one he sits on. He opens the box with his food and starts to eat his chow mein. He gets tears in the noodles.
At work, a Michael Buble CD blares over the P.A. Every shift starts out like this. It's Kyungsoo's job to change the CD once every hour so. The pattern is: Michael Buble, Colbie Callait, Jason Mraz, Alicia Keys, Sara Bareilles, repeat. All the music is soft and poppy as it should be in the cafe, where Kyungsoo works as a cashier.
Baekhyun, a co-worker of Kyungsoo’s, comes in behind the counter and puts his apron and nametag on. Baekhyun isn’t really Kyungsoo’s friend, but they smile at each other when they come in, Baekhyun sometimes looking vaguely depressed and detached. By the way Baekhyun gets behind the counter, Kyungsoo can tell that something's wrong. He asks, "What's wrong?"
"Huh," Baekhyun says in reply, walking quickly, seemingly trying to get as far away as possible from Kyungsoo. This is something Baekhyun does when he wants to ignore people and Kyungsoo thinks that Baekhyun can’t do subtlety. Kyungsoo notices this, blinks a few times, and doesn't say anything else.
When Sehun walks into the door of his shared apartment, he sees Chanyeol, his roommate, lying on the couch with his feet propped up against the arm. Chanyeol has his phone in his hand and Sehun can spot the blue and pink 'okcupid' logo from the doorway.
"You are pathetic," Sehun says, making his way past Chanyeol, who’s still staring at the dating site’s application..
"Wait," Chanyeol says. Sehun genuinely thinks Chanyeol is an idiot, but they’re friends, so he stops his walk to his room and backtracks towards Chanyeol.
"What," Sehun asks, peering over Chanyeol's shoulder.
"Hold on" Chanyeol says, tapping the screen of his phone.
"Okay," Sehun says. He holds on.
"Him," Chanyeol pulls up some guy's profile.
"Do Kyungsoo," Sehun reads aloud. "21, male."
Sehun trails off and then asks, "What about him."
"He's cute and seems nice," Chanyeol says.
"It says he's just looking for friends," Sehun says.
"I'll be his friend, he seems nice," Chanyeol repeats. Both Sehun and Chanyeol are silent for a few moments. Then, Chanyeol asks, "Should I message him?"
Sehun shrugs and says, "Sure."
"Okay," Chanyeol says, already typing a message. Sehun shakes his head and goes to his room.
Junmyeon tries to surprise Kyungsoo at work by entering the cafe at the end of the afternoon. According to the calendar he had seen on Kyungsoo's fridge the last time he had been over, Kyungsoo is working for a few hours after 4PM. Junmyeon walks into the cafe and looks around. Some guy at the counter asks, "Hello, sir, I can help you right here."
Out of courtesy, Junmyeon orders a hot chocolate. After he orders, he asks the cashier, "By any chance, is Do Kyungsoo here right now?"
"Kyungsoo?" the guy asks. Junmyeon reads the nametag. The guy's name is Baekhyun. "He left a little while ago, actually."
"Oh," Junmyeon says.
"Sorry," Baekhyun says. "You can pick your hot chocolate up at the counter over there."
"It's okay," Junmyeon smiles at Baekhyun. "Thank you."
Baekhyun walks home after work, his hands cradling a hot cup of coffee. His mind is blank as he strolls along the sidewalk, strides as slow as the pace in which the snow in the sky falls to the ground. At some point during his walk, he pulls his phone out from his pocket and deletes Jongin’s number. After he does this, he deletes the numbers of all his other ex-boyfriends. He counts 13 that he had had in the past year and he thinks, ‘this is insane’ as he walks through the door of his apartment. His cat greets him by rubbing up against his leg. He he sits down on his couch, turning on the television and watching an old episode of FRIENDS.
After Sehun talks to a desperate Chanyeol, he changes into something appropriate to wear for his night shift at Denny’s. Sometimes, to himself, he thinks, ‘what is an appropriate outfit for my night shift at Denny’s’, laughing to himself promptly after because there’s nothing appropriate about a breakfast diner being open after 11.
Often times, Sehun is alone and thinking things like this to himself. Sometimes, he thinks that he should compile his most insane thoughts into a book, but then he reminds himself the probability of a high readership seems unlikely.
When Sehun finally gets dressed, he leaves his room, finding Chanyeol still on the couch, typing on his touch screen keyboard furiously. Sehun, confusedly, squints at Chanyeol and says, “Dude, what are you doing.”
“Kyungsoo responded to me and now we’re talking,” Chanyeol says.
“Okay,” Sehun responds. “About what?”
“The global economy,” Chanyeol replies.
Sehun walks to the pantry and grabs a granola bar to eat on his way to his car. While he does this, he mutters to Chanyeol, “What.”
Chanyeol repeats, “The global economy. We’re talking about the global economy.”
“Fuck the global economy,” Sehun says, stepping out of the apartment and shutting the door behind him.
Recently, Jongin finds himself constantly going to Denny’s. Before he and Baekhyun’s relationship had started fizzling, Baekhyun would make meals for him non-stop, which was, regrettably, something Jongin had taken for granted.
Nowadays, Jongin goes to Denny’s right after class because it’s the nearest place he can go to to sit down and eat while doing his homework. Plus, he loves breakfast food and would probably eat it for every meal if given the opportunity.
Right now, he’s alone, sitting in a corner booth at Denny’s, his laptop open in front of him on the tabletop as he reads an article on Invasive Species for his zoology class. He stares blankly at the article and his waiter pours him more coffee, his third cup so far tonight. He looks up at his waiter, makes eye contact with him, and smiles, saying, “thank you”, to which the waiter responds a with a small smile and a nod.
Jongin knows that it’s too early to be thinking about another relationship, but he doesn’t think it’s too early to be staring at the waiter’s ass as he walks away.
When Sehun gets home, he sees Chanyeol, still seated on the couch, phone in hand, fingers moving about the keyboard. Sehun makes a face that resembles a look of disgust as he asks, “Don’t you have to work tomorrow.”
Chanyeol grunts and Sehun thinks that, somehow, this Kyungsoo person has made Chanyeol into some sort of primitive being. Sehun takes a seat beside Chanyeol and stares over his shoulder. He’s not actually reading anything because he doesn’t do anything that could make him considered a douchebag, but he’s checking to see if it’ll elicit some sort of reaction from Chanyeol. Nothing happens and Sehun nudges Chanyeol in the stomach with his fist.
“Ow,” Chanyeol says, deadpan.
“What the fuck,” Sehun says. “What are you talking about now.”
“Animals in captivity,” Chanyeol mutters.
“Jesus Christ,” Sehun says. “Jesus.”
Sehun punches Chanyeol in the chest and gets off the couch. He walks to his room and, when he finally gets there, he peels his pants off his leg with mild difficulty. As of late, he’s been outgrowing his pants. He is unsure why. He burrows into his bed, pantsless, and falls asleep, his alarm clock glowing with the time -- 3:23 AM.
Kyungsoo stays up until four in the morning talking to Chanyeol. Over six hours, they’ve covered a large number of topics, things ranging from favorite breed of dogs to stances on space exploration. Earlier, he had ignored a text from Junmyeon, accidentally swiping the notification away while he was trying to get to an okcupid message from Chanyeol on the subject of airport security. After he and Chanyeol decide that the both of them should get some sleep, Kyungsoo checks his texts as a part of a nightly routine. When he sees Junmyeon’s text again, he quickly texts back: ‘Sorry, didn’t see this until right now. Left work early to do some homework. Date night tomorrow, right? :)”.
The next morning, Baekhyun wakes up, body exhausted from staying up until four in the morning watching reruns of FRIENDS and eating out of a gallon tub of Rocky Road ice cream with a fork. He groans and rolls around on his bed, body dragging his blankets around. His cat leaps about, crawling over the lump of Baekhyun burrowed beneath the sheets. He knows he doesn’t have work until later in the afternoon, so he stays in bed and holds his cat, falling back asleep.
As Kyungsoo gets ready to leave, Baekhyun walks into the cafe, rounding the entire square footage of the small building to get behind the counter. Kyungsoo takes off his apron as Baekhyun puts his on. Kyungsoo notices that, today, Baekhyun looks equal parts exhausted and depressed, so he asks, “Did you sleep alright?”
Baekhyun glances at Kyungsoo, shrugs, and gets behind the counter, saying, “I slept okay. Did you?”
“Yeah. Okay,” Kyungsoo says, not entirely believing Baekhyun. “I’m leaving now. Bye.”
“Okay,” Baekhyun mutters. “Bye.”
“Bye,” Kyungsoo repeats, dashing out of the cafe.
Chanyeol wakes up when he feels something nudging at his face. He had fallen asleep on the couch last night and he can feel the consequence of this decision in his back when he rolls over. His spine cracks about ten times. He opens his eyes and he sees Sehun, staring right at him. Chanyeol squints and opens his mouth to say something, but Sehun cuts him off and says, “You’re going to be late if you don’t get out of bed right now.”
“What,” Chanyeol says. “What time is it?”
“Like, three,” Sehun responds.
“Holy shit,” Chanyeol says, quickly rolling off of the couch and getting onto his feet, almost jogging to his room. When he busts through the door, he looks at his clock and measures that he has less than 30 minutes to get ready. He can already tell that today is going to be hellish.
Recently, Junmyeon has been afraid of Kyungsoo losing interest in him. Truthfully, Junmyeon has been losing interest in Kyungsoo, but there’s still some sliver of hope that their relationship could reflourish. That’s the type of person that Junmyeon is -- hopeful and unrelinquishing.
He thinks about this as he drives, one hand on the wheel and the other rested against Kyungsoo’s thigh. When they stop at a red light, Junmyeon looks over at Kyungsoo, who does nothing but continue to stare out the window.
They have been dating for a long time and sometimes things like this just happen, Junmyeon reminds himself as he accelerates, speeding past the newly-green light. He wants to talk to Kyungsoo about this, but he’s afraid to bring it up, in the case that Kyungsoo really is tired and wanting to split. He decides he should bring it sometime after dinner as to not dampen the mood of their date.
They go on dinner dates weekly, a routine inspired by the longevity of Junmyeon’s parents’ relationship. This week, Junmyeon takes Kyungsoo to a new Asian fusion restaurant. Junmyeon chooses this place because he knows Kyungsoo likes Asian food a lot.
When they arrive at the restaurant, Junmyeon gets out of the car and immediately shuts the door, rushing to get to the passenger’s side to open Kyungsoo’s door for him, but when he gets there, Kyungsoo’s already out of the car. Kyungsoo laughs, patting his thighs off before looking over at Junmyeon. He says, “What? What are you doing?”
“I was going to open the door for you,” Junmyeon explains.
“Oh,” Kyungsoo responds with a small laugh. “Sorry.”
“What, it’s okay,” Junmyeon says, reaching over and grabbing Kyungsoo’s hand. “Let’s go now, alright?”
Chanyeol, upon walking into the restaurant via the kitchen, is greeted by Jongin, standing by the small back area hidden by a wall. Jongin says, “Why are you so early?”
Chanyeol looks at his watch and then over at Jongin, realizing that, to arrive on time instead of 20 minutes earlier than anticipated, he probably should have driven slower or taken a longer shower. He shrugs and says, “I thought I was gonna be late.”
“Oh,” Jongin laughs and shakes his head. “Whatever. There’s a table of two that just came in, could you take care of that?”
“Yeah, sure, okay,” Chanyeol says, grabbing the order sheet and walking over to the table of two.
Junmyeon doesn’t really appreciate the way their waiter has been looking at Kyungsoo and he definitely doesn’t like the way Kyungsoo has been looking at the waiter. When the waiter leaves after pouring their two glasses of water, Junmyeon asks, “Do you know him?”
Kyungsoo had been staring after the guy as he had left, so quickly, he whips his head around to look at Junmyeon and says, “Huh? What?”
“The waiter,” Junmyeon says, nodding his head towards the back area.
“Oh, no,” Kyungsoo says, shaking his head.
“Oh,” Junmyeon says, not wanting to press further. “Okay.”
Kyungsoo doesn’t say anything after that, but when the waiter returns, Kyungsoo stares at him, Junmyeon stares at Kyungsoo, and the waiter tries to balance his line of sight between the two of them, ultimately failing and mostly looking at Kyungsoo.
When Chanyeol gets home, he checks okcupid from his laptop and sees a message from Kyungsoo in his inbox that says: ‘Hello, Mr. 97%, I’ll be deleting okcupid by the end of the week, there’s too much of a risk for my boyfriend to take things the wrong way. It was nice seeing you (unexpectedly) tonight. :) Let’s stay in touch.” Along with the message is a phone number, an e-mail address, and a snapchat ID.

:) Hello.
Chanyeol is sitting on the couch when Sehun walks through the door at three in the morning. Sehun is holding a thin piece of paper in his hand. Chanyeol looks over at Sehun closing the door and says, “Hey.”
Sehun locks the door and slips his shoes off. He walks to Chanyeol and sits down beside him, still holding on to the piece of paper. Chanyeol peers over at the paper, away from the phone in his hand. The piece of paper Sehun is holding is a crumpled up receipt. Sehun stares at the wall behind their television, seemingly looking at nothing. Chanyeol reaches over with his phone in his hand and pokes the top of it against Sehun’s arm, repeating, “Hey.”
“Some guy gave me his number,” Sehun mumbles.
“Was he hot?” Chanyeol asks. Sehun nods. “Then…?”
“Am I supposed to, like, call him?” Sehun asks. Chanyeol furrows his eyebrows and squints at Sehun.
“Yes,” Chanyeol responds.
Sehun smoothes out the receipt and stares at the number. Chanyeol stares at Sehun.
As far as Chanyeol knows, Sehun has always been like this. Sehun rarely seeks anything from relationships. Friendships are arbitrary to him and romance seems unnecessary. Chanyeol, from time to time, pulls Sehun aside and tries to describe the importance of building good social circles. Sehun, whenever receiving these talks, always nods in understanding and says, “I’ll try my best.”
Chanyeol has no doubt that Sehun is trying his best, but Sehun, with work and school imminent, has little to no time to hone is social skills. At this given opportunity, Chanyeol expects Sehun to try and make a friendship, if not a romantic relationship.
“I’m not really looking for anything right now,” Sehun mutters, folding his arms across his chest and keeping the piece of paper in his line of sight.
“You never are,” Chanyeol glances back down at his phone and responds to a text from Kyungsoo.
“Maybe I should start,” Sehun says.
“Start what?” Chanyeol responds, invested in the well-being of his roommate’s interpersonal relationships.
“Looking for.. something,” Sehun pulls his phone out from his pocket. Chanyeol glances over Sehun’s shoulder and sees that Sehun is putting the number into his contacts.
“Oh,” Chanyeol says. “Good.”
Sehun is grateful for afternoon classes when he wakes up at noon on Monday, the next day. He had, for reasons unknown to himself, stayed up hours too late, thinking about and analyzing every relationship (friends, siblings, ex-boyfriends, etc.) he’s ever had to the point of making his head hurt. A popular trend in every failed relationship was a lack of communication from his end. Another was a feeling of dissatisfaction from both parties, causing a mostly mutual end to contact.
Jongin, while sitting in the middle of a class on the history of technology, thinks about the impulsive decision he had made hours ago when he had scribbled his number on the Merchant’s Copy of his receipt at Denny’s. In all honesty, he barely remembers what the guy’s name -- something starting with an ‘s’ and ending in an ‘n’. Sean? Salmon?
Out of all his exes, Jongin had dated Baekhyun the longest at three months. Granted, Jongin hasn’t dated many people, but the length of this relationship had taken the title by a landslide. All of his other exes had only been around for a few weeks, one fling having had only lasted a few days.
Jongin, spacing out and already knowing about the topic his professor is covering, replays last night’s scenario in his head. He had signed the receipt quickly, scribbled his number onto the sheet of paper, left a 27% tip, and half-sprinted out of the diner, bolting to his bike and pedaling home at an insane speed.
Remembering these moments cause him a secondhand embarrassment for his past self and some moderate regret before a harsh vibration buzzes against his leg. A few people sitting beside him look over, but Jongin pretends nothing had happened, tuning back into the drone of his professor’s voice.

Hi you gave me your number last night
Kyungsoo has known Junmyeon for the majority of his life, beginning as playmates and progressing to high school sweethearts and currently floating in the realm of adult relationship. Prior to their romantic history, their families had been friends, neighboring one another and their mothers attached at the hips. Junmyeon, up until high school, had been a brotherly figure to Kyungsoo, helping on homework and playing video games. Kyungsoo himself isn’t very sure when things had changed.
When Kyungsoo and Junmyeon were younger, Kyungsoo had thoroughly enjoyed spending extended periods of time sitting in Junmyeon’s lap and using his small hands to touch the older’s face. Kyungsoo, whenever told about by family and friends, always says he doesn’t recall. Junmyeon claims to ‘remember vaguely’. Since they’d begun dating, Kyungsoo hasn’t experienced physical intimacy like that, finding that, somehow, he had gotten to second base in his toddlerhood and stopped accelerating to third or fourth, never achieving a ‘home run’.
Dating Junmyeon is, admittedly, boring. There isn’t anything about the relationship that evokes displeasure. There isn’t much that brings about a certain feeling of pleasure, either. The best Kyungsoo can say about the relationship is that he feels comfortable around Junmyeon and it’s nice to be able to say he’s in a relationship. He guesses that the problem is that they’re too much like brothers, and not enough like lovers.
Jongin skips Denny’s for the night and goes straight home after class, staring at the text he had received while his professor had been lecturing, deciding how he should reply to it. At this point, Jongin believes he has two choices: 1) respond with a pickup line or 2) respond with something equally as difficult to respond with (which could be a pickup line).
When Jongin gets to his apartment, he heads straight for his room and dives right into his bed via belly flop. He tosses his backpack right off the edge of his mattress and glances at the smartphone he clutches. He thinks, ‘how do I respond to this? Do I want to get into his pants that badly?’
Jongin comes to the conclusion that, yes, he does want to get into the guy’s pants that badly.

Sehun, perusing the emptying floor of the Denny’s diner, spots Jongin entering the restaurant, backpack in tow. Jongin doesn’t make eye contact with him, so Sehun looks away immediately, not wanting to seem like he’s staring. He walks in the opposite direction of Jongin and pours another cup of coffee for a customer.
When Sehun turns around, he sees Jongin walking towards him, this time making eye contact and sending him a lift of the corner of his mouth. Sehun returns the smile, still holding the pot of coffee as he tips his head to the side, nodding Jongin to his normal corner table.
Kyungsoo looks at the clock and realizes that it’s past three in the morning. His textbooks are stacked in a pile beside him. He sits at his desk in a comfortable chair with wheels, his completed homework making up another small stack opposite his textbooks. He has his head bowed, his hands cradling his smartphone as he texts rapidly, sending message after message.
He’s been texting Chanyeol all day between math problems and filling orders for people at work. Every so often, he’ll check different threads, one with his mother and another with his boyfriend. He assures his mother that he’s doing well in class and that Junmyeon is doing well, too. Junmyeon reasserts his love and Kyungsoo complies, passively accepting what he can and deflecting what is too much for him.
The lamp located at the corner of his desk glows a soft white, the rest of the lights in his room off. He had planned to sleep an hour ago, but Chanyeol had kept him up. Over the past few hours, Kyungsoo has learned much about Chanyeol.
Chanyeol, apparently, was MVP on his little league baseball team. Chanyeol wishes to own many cats in the future, even though he’s allergic. He likes to ride his bike but prefers to ride the bus because he could, in theory, talk to more people on a bus than on his bike. Chanyeol has a roommate.
Chanyeol’s roommate is, apparently, constantly apathetic. Kyungsoo, for a split moment, had felt envious of Sehun, but quickly brushed the feeling away, realizing that his envy had been unjustifiable.
Jongin and Sehun make out in the men’s restroom at Denny’s. It is unsanitary and Sehun doesn’t want to be making out in a bathroom, but what happens must happen. Jongin is handsy when it comes to this and Sehun doesn’t know where to touch. He lets Jongin lead the kiss, and it seems Jongin is more than happy with that.
As they kiss, Sehun doesn’t think about anything at all, feeling a specific type of kissing Jongin zen.
