Luhan was on his way to his parents’ when his car broke down. He cursed under his breath when he tried to restart the engine without avail. The fact that he had at least pulled up to the side in time didn’t make it any better for him.
Of course, this had to be the one day where he’d forgotten to take his mobile from its safe spot on the nightstand. He looked up at the cloudy sky and sighed heavily.
“Wow, God, you’re so funny,” he muttered darkly.
Now he’d have to make some random car stop and depend on a stranger’s help. That was just great. Reluctant to take the necessary action he stared at the hood for a while and eventually decided to open it.
He thoughtfully chewed on his lower lip as he eyed the engine. He knew about oil changes and changing tires wasn’t that much of a problem either but anything else was beyond him.
He grinned as he imagined a handsome young man coming to his rescue but quickly came back to reality. As if something like that was ever going to happen to him.
Luhan pricked his ears as a car came to a halt only a few meters from where he stood. He prayed that it was a decent person who actually wanted to help him and not any sort of criminal or pervert before he turned around.
“No way,” he uttered as soon as he set eyes on the car’s driver. He was young, he was handsome and he was walking right into Luhan’s direction.
“Need any help?” he asked in a pleasant voice, being close enough to be polite but not too close to seem obtrusive.
Luhan nodded bashfully. “My car broke down and I have no idea why, to be honest.”
The stranger smiled at him openly. “Mind if I take a look?”
“Not at all.”
The brunette man rolled up the sleeves of his black button-down shirt as he walked over to the broken vehicle. Looking at the engine he asked Luhan a few short questions and listed several possible causes for the malfunction.
„You know a lot about cars, huh?“ Luhan asked, trying not to sound as impressed as he was.
“Well, I guess you could say so. I’m a mechanic.”
“You don’t look like a mechanic,” Luhan blurted out and immediately wanted to slap himself. The young man in front of him probably thought he had no manners at all.
The mechanic, still bent over to check whatever there was to check, chuckled lightly.
“What do I look like then?”
Luhan watched him from the side and smiled.
“A banker maybe.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you.” He took a step back, careful not to hit his head and looked at Luhan.
“I suggest you call the wrecking service, there’s not much I can do right here and now,” he said with an apologetic smile.Luhan nodded as he looked at his car.
“Oh, but I don’t have my phone with me!” he remembered, his voice sounding rather distressed.
“You can just use mine, if you want to,” his knight in shining armor offered lightheartedly.
“That would be great! Thank you. And sorry for troubling you.”
The other man tilted his head with a smile. “I stopped voluntarily, remember? I’m glad to help you.”
Luhan nodded and returned the smile.
“Well, I better make that call then.”
It didn’t take long to settle things. The tow truck would be there about half an hour later and the car would be brought to a garage near to where Luhan lived. He returned the mobile phone to its owner and thanked him once again.
“You probably have somewhere to go to, right? I don’t want to hold you back any longer.”
The young man shook his head.
“I’ve got plenty of time. Do you need to go somewhere?”
Luhan hesitated. “Well, I was on my way to my parents’ house. It’s their wedding anniversary today.” He sighed. “They wanted me to have dinner with them because they’re going back to China next week.” He noticed his opponent’s appalled expression and quickly explained that they’d only be gone for a little over a month.
“So you’re actually Chinese?” the stunned mechanic asked.
“Yep.”
The young man looked genuinely impressed. “Wow, your Korean is so good, I didn’t notice any accent at all.”
Luhan smiled. Fooled another one.
“My name’s Luhan,” he said. In his opinion it was about time they introduced themselves to each other.
“Kim Jongin, nice to meet you.” They grinned at each other as they shook hands. Luhan liked the sparkling in his new acquaintance’s eyes; it added to the exceptionally enchanting effect he already had on him.
Jongin insisted on waiting with Luhan until the tow truck would arrive. Time flew by as they engaged in a casual conversation and both secretly thought that the driver should have taken more time to arrive when he eventually stopped the truck at the roadside.
“Is you parents’ home far from here?” Jongin asked suddenly. Luhan thought for a moment.
“I’d say it’s about 25 more kilometers,” he answered unsuspectingly.
“Do you want me to take you there?”
Luhan gaped at him. Jongin looked a little embarrassed and, what was really astonishing him, somewhat hopeful. The Chinese man found himself nodding before he could even think anything through.
“Only if it doesn’t bother you, of course,” he added hastily. Jongin smiled at him. Luhan couldn’t quite grasp what it was, but the way Jongin looked at him seemed different than before.
“Just give me the directions,” he said smoothly.
Luhan had to clarify a few more things with the truck driver, but soon enough they were ready to go. The drive didn’t take long. The two young men spent the time talking about their respective work and their hobbies, discovering a shared passion for dancing what delighted both of them.
For whatever reason Jongin got out of the car when they reached their destination, Luhan was glad he did. His mother, who was rushing down the driveway to greet her son, would have never seen him if he’d just driven on right away and thus wouldn’t have insisted on the courteous young man staying for dinner either.
“And that’s why we’re all here today, to celebrate the marriage of our two wonderful friends, sons, brothers,” Sehun wrapped up his speech. “Let’s hear it for the grooms!”
