Summary: Katherine experiences a small setback, but soon recovers, with an unexpected bonus.

The initial expedition to P3X-647 had indicated it had not been inhabited for a very long time. A second, scientific, mission was authorized and Daniel tagged along with the SG research team assigned to collect samples. He wanted to take a closer look at the ruins surrounding the Stargate.

It was a comfortable enough a planet and Daniel didn't mind the dead silence as he slowly strolled towards the Stargate. The research team was doing their thing, diligently collecting rocks and other assorted things, leaving Daniel to explore the ruins. There were still some buildings that hadn't collapsed under the weight of time, but their inhabitants were long gone - and Daniel found them fascinating.

Fascination turned to confusion, and then to alarm as the gate activated. He hid behind the nearest structure - a sort of temple, he had guessed when he’d examined it a few hours earlier - and waited, his heartbeat quickening. He could already hear Jack lecturing him on how unsafe it was to separate from the rest of the team, “... no matter how long-long-since abandoned the place may be.”

Curiosity fought for primacy with alarm as he saw what appeared to be a young girl fly at a ridiculous speed out of the Stargate. She crashed audibly into the wall of a nearby building. He was sure she would have gone through the wall had these been the ruins of any civilization on Earth.

She has to be dead. I wonder who she was.

He didn't move. The gate was still open and he knew someone or something else could come out. And so they did. Jaffa, a dozen of them. Crap.

They halted near the Stargate, looking around, helmets open. One pointed towards the girl. What could have made her fly out that fast? And what do they want with her? He stayed exactly where he was, hoping they would leave after confirming the poor girl was dead.

“Looking for me, boys?” The voice came from a high place, out of Daniel's sight if he wanted to avoid being seen by the Jaffa. A young female voice. Flirty too. What is going on here? His position allowed him to see them, while they couldn't see him, their attention focused in a different direction, towards the girl. More than one? Surely, she couldn't have survived that impact?

There was a heavy thud and one of the Jaffa was down, blood flowing freely from his head. The others opened fire with their Zat'nik'tels. The girly laughter that followed indicated they did not hit their target. “Not so easy without the whole army, is it? No worries, we'll fix that.”

His mind was racing. He couldn't see her, but the distances weren't making sense. Maybe the valley the Stargate was in warped sound somehow. Unlikely. Advanced teleportation technology maybe. She was definitely talking at them from the tops of different buildings. This was soon confirmed by the direction of their shooting.

“Aray kree!” They split up then, two staying at the Stargate and four groups of two, one headed by the leader, spreading out from the location of the gate in search of their quarry. None of them seemed to be heading this way; she seemed to be leading them away from the Stargate.

Daniel had nothing better to do than to speculate as to what kind of situation he had stumbled into here - the Stargate was still guarded, though the wormhole had closed by now. No helmets, no staff weapons - not ready for an attack, or perhaps underestimating the opponent. She was a mystery though; wearing a blouse and jeans, she looked like a young Earth girl. But not only did she survive that collision at great speed, she now seemed to be taking on a dozen Jaffa by herself, almost playfully. He heard more shots from a bit further away, but could not risk leaving his cover. He wanted to help her, but getting himself killed would not be the way to go about it. I'll stay and try to make sense of things.

What happened next did not help his plan. The two Jaffa at the gate went down, and were joined by two of their comrades, each with a zat still trained at one of the unconscious ones. What? The girl walked up to the gate. “And now to make things a little easier.” She bent down over one of the knocked-out Jaffa. Things just keep getting less and less understandable.

“Five down, six to go.” She sounded quite pleased with herself. Three, sure, but how is it five? “Well? Go get me the others.” The two standing Jaffa turned and went in the direction of the others. It was at this point that Daniel stopped trying to figure things out and decided she was in no need of help. And he decided to keep hiding, this time from her too. He couldn't help but look over to the gate quite often, to see how the situation would develop.

She was sitting on one of the stairs to the gate, her chin resting on her hands. She seemed rather bored, waiting. After less than a minute she got up and started fiddling with the dead Jaffa, apparently trying to figure out the armour. It didn't take her long to take the bulkier pieces off, and try them on. She quickly decided against each one - even tried on the metal cap. She did not seem to like that at all. The three Jaffa lying on the floor were joined by four more, and the two who now seemed to be working for her went off again to find the last two.

Once or twice every minute, she would poke one of the unconscious ones with the tip of her sneaker; none of them stirred. The last of the Jaffa finally arrived - the two conscious ones dragging the newly-unconscious ones.

“You can come out now!” She was standing on the tips of her toes now, looking in Daniel’s general direction. She didn’t see me, she couldn’t have. “Yes, you hiding there! All the gun nuts are out of action.”
She can’t be sure I’m here. She must be guessing after seeing a glimpse of my head -- she must have sharp eyes to see me from there.

“Aww. C’mon, you’re going to hurt my feelings.” Her voice had taken on a distinctly pouty tone.

Right, staying hidden not making much sense anymore. He looked around the corner, and saw her still looking his way. As he moved towards her, she waved at him in welcome. He walked towards the Stargate, noticing the complete lack of any kind of reaction from the Jaffa as he closed the distance between them. The situation at the gate was surreal.

“There you are. Hi, I’m Katherine.” She said this with a beaming smile, as though they were meeting at a party rather than on a desolate planet surrounded by unconscious Jaffa. He shook her hand, “Daniel. Er, Daniel Jackson.”

“Army wear. Nice. You don’t look army though, what with the glasses and the hat.” Her head tilted to the side; she was examining him from head to toe. Being closely examined by this girl, who he now noticed was very attractive, made him blush and get all nervous. Attractive women usually did.

“No. I mean yes, I’m with the army, but not in the army. I mean … I’m a scientist. Working for the army.”

“Brainy guy in uniform. Hot.” She smiled and ran a finger across his chest. It was not helping his flustered state get any better.

He did somehow get his bearings though. “So what’s with the … them?” Just a few of his bearings though.

“Ah yes, them. I wonder how long it will take them to wake up.”

“Wake...up?” Plenty of bearings still missing.

“Oh Daniel,” she grinned. There was something unsettlingly predatory about it, “no need for you to worry yourself with that. Just recruiting. Like this army. But mine.” She kicked the nearest out-of-it Jaffa and got no response, causing her to frown.

One of the Jaffa originally guarding the gate stirred with a groan. Katherine knelt next to him, putting her hand on his chest. As his eyes opened, his gaze met hers. Like the others so far, he seemed enthralled by her gaze. “You are my soldier now. You will protect me and obey me in all things.”

She got up and dusted off her knees. “Not long now then.” The newly-conscious Jaffa got up and just remained standing there. “The others will start waking up soon enough, and then we can go get the rest of them.”

“How … how are you doing this? What are you?” Daniel was now properly alarmed. Katherine just seemed amused.

She closed the distance between them, standing intimately close. His breathing turned shallow - he hadn’t expected this. She ran her hand down his cheek and let it drift around his neck, then pulled him towards her for a kiss. Their lips touched softly and Katherine pulled him closer, passionate, demanding. Daniel felt he could lose himself with her. And then it was over, just as suddenly as it had begun.

“Mmm. Well that was nice. I think I’ll take you with me.” Daniel gazed deeply into her eyes. “You will come with me.” It was all perfectly reasonable. Of course he would follow her … anywhere.

He watched her collect the remaining Jaffa and put them under her control, as they should be.

“We, my dear Doctor Jackson,” she practically purred, making his heart skip a beat, “Are going to have so much fun.”

She ordered a Jaffa to dial out.

When the gate opened, she led the way and he followed her through. He didn’t look back.
