Summary: The profile of the Leverage team comes across the BAU’s desk, and they decide to investigate Nate Ford and his team.
When the case came across Penelope Garcia’s desk, she found it fascinating and decided to hand it off to the team. The tech wanted to see what they thought.
“So what exactly is this new case about?” Spencer Reid questioned. Garcia had told them she thought they needed to profile this case because it was one of the most interesting she had come across.
Aaron Hotchner took over from there. “We have a group of criminals who are actually helping people, like modern day Robin Hoods. They commit crimes themselves, as if they are vigilantes, but they actually help others in do so. The people they help have been wronged in some way.” He actually admired their unsubs for this, but he wasn’t about to say that out loud.
“That’s actually pretty amazing of them.” In all his years of profiling, Dave Rossi had never come across something like this.
Derek Morgan flipped through the files they had on their unsubs. “I’m not sure if we should really go after them. They are helping people.”
“True, but they commit crimes while doing so.” Hotch didn’t really want to go after these unsubs either, but it was their job. They needed to arrest them and put them in jail.
“This Nathan Ford is a former insurance investigator who broke out of jail a few months ago. What could have possibly made him switch careers like that?” Reid was confused and fascinated by the group of people he was reading about.
“It says here that his son died from cancer after the insurance company he worked here denied an experimental treatment. How could they do that to that poor little boy?” Garcia was ready to start crying. The experimental treatment could have saved Sam Ford. No wonder this Nate seemed to have snapped after that and started committing crimes!
“There’s a Parker in here, but no idea if that’s her first or last name or even her name at all. And then there’s Sophie Devereux, AKA Grace McDonald. She’s been using the alias of Sophie for several years now. She is also a part time actress. The others are a hacker - Alec Hardison - and a man named Eliot Spencer. According to witnesses - most of who have good things to say about this team - say that Eliot reacts badly to child abuse cases. Anyway, we need to find them and possibly arrest them,” Hotch explained to his team.
“So where’s Prentiss? Isn’t she coming with us?” Reid had been wondering where his co-worker was for the past ten minutes now.
“She’s home sick and will be sitting this case out. Now let’s get to the jet and leave.” Hotch gathered up the files, and the team left the conference room.
When the BAU arrived at their destination, they headed straight to the bar that the hacker, Alec Hardison, owned. They weren’t going to make any arrests yet (if at all), but just wanted to observe the unsubs.
“The food here is excellent. You should try it,” Reid told his co-workers. He hadn’t eaten in a while and was starving.
“Maybe later.” Morgan took a sip of his beer and then wandered over to the jukebox.
“Nate, going up against Sterling again isn’t going to end well.” Sophie was adamant that they avoid Nate’s old co-worker (and their nemesis) at all costs.
Hotch couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the conversation. He was curious about what “Sophie” and Nate were discussing.
“She’s right, man. We need this let this Sterling thing go. Something always goes wrong.” Eliot couldn’t believe he was avoiding a confrontation with Sterling, actually. However, going after him again wouldn’t be worth it. It was better to stay away.
“Fine.” Nate understood their worries, so he’d listen to his family. They were probably right anyway. He shouldn’t let his hatred of Sterling cloud his judgment.
“Guys, I think we have company,” Parker whispered. She stealthily turned to stare at the FBI agents a few feet away from them.
Nate looked over. “Hardison, do your thing.” He thought they definitely looked suspicious. Plus, he had never seen them in the bar before. And they were all dressed up!
“Sure.” Hardison got up and made his way upstairs to investigate the strangers in their bar.
“Wonder who they are.” Sophie hoped they weren’t police. She didn’t want to have to deal with the law again. It was getting to be pretty exhausting.
“They could be FBI,” Parker correctly guessed. She didn’t try to guess why the FBI would be here. There was pretty a variety of reasons that they had showed up.
Nate’s cell phone rang and he answered it. “Hardison found something,” he announced after hanging up a few minutes later. The team went upstairs to learn what he had found.
“They’re suspicious of us.” Rossi figured their unsubs’ hacker was checking up on them. They seemed to be pretty thorough.
“Good. Maybe they’ll trip up when they know they’re being watched.” Hotch really wasn’t worried about their cover being blown. They’d be able to do their jobs no matter what.
“I doubt it. They are very careful in covering their tracks. I’m surprised that there’s even a file on them.” Reid didn’t want to admit it, but he kind of liked these unsubs.
“He’s right. I wouldn’t put it past them to somehow elude us.” Morgan took another sip of his beer and then set it back down.
Alec Hardison suddenly popped up in front of the BAU team. “Hi. I hope you’re enjoying your meal tonight. It’s on the house. And you are beautiful,” he flirted with Penelope.
She giggled. “Thank you. I’m in a relationship, though. Sorry.” Garcia definitely liked Hardison, especially since he was apparently awesome with computers. If she wasn’t with Kevin, Penelope would seriously consider dating Hardison. That if, he wasn’t an unsub.
Hardison smiled and walked away again. “You were flirting with her,” they heard Parker say. The blonde woman looked jealous.
“Baby girl, what was that about?” Morgan just stared at his best friend in shock.
“He was nice and flirting with me. I couldn’t help it. Sorry, guys,” the sheepish Penelope replied. She smiled nervously at her teammates.
“It’s okay. These unsubs are very good at what they do. It’s not your fault,” Hotch assured her. He gave her an encouraging smile.
Nathan Ford strolled up to their table. “I want you to be honest with me. My team and I would like to know why you’re here, investigating us.”
The BAU stared at the former insurance man in shock. “We’re investigating you because of a file prepared against you and your team. You’ve committed many, many crimes over the past few years, but yet you help people. Why?” Hotch questioned.
Nate laughed. “That’s actually a funny story. I assembled my team to help me with something and we became a family. They pretty much got addicted to helping people who have been screwed, so that’s what we do. We only go after those who are truly evil and deserve it.”
“I actually admire you and your team for that.” Rossi liked this Nathan Ford. At least he wasn’t running away from them.
“Well, thank you, I guess.” Nate really didn’t know what to say to that. He was still trying to figure out why the FBI had a file on them.
“You’re welcome. We do have a duty to arrest you, but Mr. Ford, my team and I really don’t want to do that. You are doing some good, even though you’re using really questionable methods.” Hotch wasn’t going to feel guilty about letting them go.
“I can deal with that. I hope to never see you or your team in my bar again, Agent Hotchner. Unless you’re profiling criminals that aren’t us.” Nate was surprised that this Agent Hotchner wasn’t arresting him. He seemed like a good man, and he informed the agent of that.
“Thank you, Mr. Ford. Now, my team and I are hungry. What’s your best food in this place?” Hotch was pretty hungry now that he thought about it. And if he wasn’t going to arrest the unsubs, might as well eat their food. It only seemed fair.
Nate smiled and told the team about the bar’s best meals. After the BAU finished eating their dinner, Nate and Hotch went off to have a private conversation. They just needed to talk alone.
After returning, the two shook hands. That was the last time that Nate’s team and the BAU ever came across each other.
Nate’s team continued to help people in their own way, while the BAU team never forgot them. It had been an interesting meeting between the groups.
Apparently, Hardison and Garcia continued correspondence online, but that was the extent of their friendship. The two had a lot in common, more than anyone initially realized.
It had been an interesting trip for Hotch and his team. They had fully gone in expecting to make arrests, but being unable to do so hadn’t surprised them. Nate’s team was definitely very slick in evading capture.
The meeting had changed the BAU’s perception on other criminals they ran across, something they would always be grateful for.
