I just read George Orwell's _Down and Out in Paris and London_
the guy is a total genius, such an amazing fresh and offhand way of writing, especially in a highly stylized age. This is an autobiographical account of being broke in 1920's parisian fleabag hotels/lodging houses, working as a dishwasher. reminiscent of the masculine take on restaurant work by Anthony Bourdain in Kitchen Confidential. Also some less recognizable pathos in his stories of "tramping" in London. The structures discussed here seem archaic, but the restaurant stuff seems to be still dead-on. wierd.
Also this amazing feminist sci-fi novel by Marge Piercy, whose feminist poetry you probably read in college if you took women's studies. _Woman on the Edge of Time_ is like a feminist future utopist vision seem through the lens of an institutionalized contemporary (1970s) woman. There is a dystopian aspect too, a patriachal materialist world battling the gender-equal communitarian one. I get really into specific descriptions of future worlds, dystopias and utopias.
Also! I finally watched the Golden Compass movie. It was awesome! The dialog kind of sucks, but everything looks super cool, the message isn't watered down, and the little girl who plays Lyra is amazing.
