Ladies and gentlemen, I have a job.
Yes, I know. "How can this be? One as you who have had no serious employment for a year?" Indeed, it is true. I now work as a database programmer for a company just outside of St. Louis. They have wonderful benefits, the pay is quite good for the position, and the people are really nice. My supervisor is one of those short, bubbly guys who you know probably has about a billion grandkids and bakes (and probably decorates) cookies. The position doesn't officially start until the 4th, but I'm really looking forward to starting, especially since my income of late is... lacking. So, all in all, things are really getting better. And now that I actually feel some sense of permanence, I should probably start unpacking my things and actually MOVE IN since I've been here for a year now. ...yeah.
Ironically enough, while the job is a typical 8-5 everyday (with half-day Fridays), having it will free me up more than ever. With such a limited income, I couldn't go anywhere fun or even mildly interesting without delving into someone else's pocket. And don't get me wrong, I am immensely appreciative of EVERYONE who was kind enough to not only give me money, but also time. My depression sucked, and what truly averted it was the presence of friends and family who support me. (I'd gladly make a list, but I don't want to insult anyone by accidentally forgetting names. You know who you are.) Now that I have means of supporting myself (and building my retirement) I think I might be able to have some real freedom. I'd love to visit Colorado again, but on my own dime.
All in all, things are good. Christmas was wonderful; my brother, his wife, and his kids are all just great. (I'll have to remember that the littlest one really loves rag-doll Street Fighter.) What did I get? A belt, a book, and some candy. In that order, I needed it, it's interesting, and it's delicious. So I suppose I'm not really into massive amounts of presents anymore, but that's alright. I will say this: One of the kids got Wii Resort, and I'm actually jealous. That's a game I'm going to have to go pick up at some point in the future. Oh! Going back to the job, my mom had really been pulling for me the whole time, so I thought I'd surprise her on Christmas day with a card. With some silly pictures of me, some cardstock, and some MS Publisher magic later, I've got a quad-fold greeting card with some signature strangeness to it, and on the inside (when completely unfolded) was my offer letter from the company. Needless to say, she was happy. (In fact, she shrieked.) She was a little upset later that I had blatantly lied to her about not having the job, (I received the offer letter on December 10th.) but it was fine since it was solely for the purpose of concentrated happiness. I mean come on, who DOESN'T like a Christmas miracle?
God bless us, everyone!
