I don't like this one at all. It had potential then I lost myself in it. Maybe I'll redo it some day in the future. I've been trying to write this one for a few weeks. Lame :[
Speak Now
By the time you make it to the church it’s about 5 minutes until the ceremony is set to start. You wanted to be there in time to talk to him before everything started, but the way you’ve been second guessing yourself for the past 3 hours didn’t allow you the luxury of time. When you open the doors to the church, you look around and try to go unnoticed by the rows of people sitting on either side of the aisle. You take a seat in the back row of the groom’s section and focus on looking through your purse, trying to look preoccupied if anyone should try to talk to you. A few more people take a seat next to you before music starts to play. You look up to see that Lee has taken his place in the front of the church. Your breath catches in your throat as you look at him. He looks handsome in a black tux, his hair perfect on his head, and his face freshly shaven. Butterflies erupt in your stomach and you’re not sure you can do this; this is the biggest day of his life. He loves her, you know he does, but you know deep down that he’s making the biggest mistake of his life.
You bite your tongue as you watch his niece toddle down the aisle throwing up rose pedals as she goes. She looks sickeningly cute in her little white dress and mini veil that it makes you think back to when she was born. The way Lee swooned over his newly born niece and promised to spoil her in every way possible the first time he held her makes you miss him all the much more. His sister Shannon is the first bridesmaid to walk down the aisle with Lee’s friend Brian. The bridesmaid dresses are a strapless light blue number that hits just below the knee. Brian is dressed similarly to Lee with black chucks adorning his feet. Next comes a girl you don’t recognize and Andrew, Lee’s friend from Idol. The next two bridesmaids you don’t recognize must be the bride’s sisters or friends. As Vince and Mike walk down you can’t help but miss them as well. You’ve had such good times with them. You take a sigh of relief when you realize that you haven’t been caught yet.
The bridal march starts and the whole church gets to their feet. The doors to the church open and you catch a glimpse of Crystal, Lee’s fiancée and her father before they head down the aisle. Her dress is a little too gaudy for your tastes, strapless, corseted, see-thru in the bodice, and a long train coming from the back. Her hair is half up and half down left curly to fall across her shoulders and her veil covers her face. She takes graceful strides down the aisle as her father steadies her before they finally make it to the front of the church where Lee and the rest of the bridal party are waiting for her. Her father lifts her veil over her head and gives her a kiss, whispering a few words of encouragement into her ear. He shakes Lee’s hand and then finds his place in the front row. The rest of the crowd in the pews also take a seat.
“We are gathered here today to join Lee and Crystal in holy matrimony. Who gives this woman in marriage to this man?” The preacher asks as he looks towards the pews.
“My mother and I do…” Crystal’s father calls out to the preacher.
The preacher drones on and on about something and you’re not completely sure what’s going on. You’re staring at Lee and the more you look at him the more you know you need to stop this. He’s staring at Crystal with a huge grin on his face, holding her hands in his, focusing on whatever the preacher is saying. Your thoughts drift back to the way he used to hold your hand in his as you walked down the street or the way he grabbed both your hands in the winter when he knew they were freezing. The way he smiled at you when you woke up next to him in the morning. The way he told you he loved you and how he wanted to grow old with you. This was supposed to be your wedding. You and him up at that alter, getting married in front of all your friends and family. All of the sudden you hear the words that you’ve been waiting for.
“…Speak now or forever hold your peace.”
There’s silence as you stand, your hands shaking, trying to decide what you’re going to say. “You can’t do this Lee!” You cry as people crane their necks to look at you their faces full of disgust. Lee has turned around and is looking at you now. His eyes are wide and you can’t tell whether he’s pissed, surprised, or both. “You can’t marry her. I know this is the wrong time and place, but you just can’t do it.” Tears are coming to your eyes now and you know you’ve made a complete fool of yourself. “Please just think about it.” You turn and walk towards the aisle towards the door.
When you make it outside tears are streaming down your face. This can’t be happening. You fall to the steps and take in a deep breath, trying to control yourself. You just completely ruined his wedding, there’s no way that this is going to end well. You feel the door open behind you, but you don’t turn to see who it is. Your face is buried in your hands.
“Hey.” The familiar voice says as you feel him take a seat next to you on the steps. He pulls at your hands and takes them in his. “Stop crying.” He pleads softly when you finally look up at him.
“I’m sorry I ruined your wedding…” You some how get out.
He shakes his head and pulls you into a hug. “You shouldn’t be sorry.” He says matter-of-factly.
You eye him suspiciously and he lets out a low laugh. “Stop playing.”
“I’m not playing. I was making a huge mistake. I’m glad someone had the balls to stop it before I went through with it.”
You burst into a giggle now. “Glad I could be of assistance.”
“I’m serious. I’ve been having second thoughts for months now, I’ve just been too afraid to admit it.”
“I’ve missed you.” You say softly as you look away from him.
He nods in agreement. “I miss the way things were with us. It was so not complicated the way things with Crystal were. I miss just hanging out and goofing off. Things were always so serious with Crys.” He lets out a long sigh. “What am I supposed to do now?”
You shrug a little. “Go get a drink with me.”
“That’s a start.” He says with a smile as the two of you get up from the steps and walk into the setting sun. You’re not sure what happened or what’s happening, but you cross your fingers knowing that you’ve done the right thing.
