The BBC seem to be labouring under the delusion that chicken and ketchup are both hard to get in the States just now. I can't address the issue of ketchup, but earlier tonight, Meijers was selling whole chickens already properly cut up for $0.99/lb, which is pretty much the sort of price you see when they'd rather sell it at a loss than throw it out. Kroger had lots of chicken too, although I didn't note the price.

Gasoline, on the other hand, seems to be entirely unavailable in the southeastern states, and shamefully expensive elsewhere (I paid $3.00 per gallon yesterday for 87 octane). The federal government hastens to assure us that the unavailability of gasoline certainly doesn't mean that there's a gas shortage - there are just "distribution issues", which means that you can't buy gas in some places. How reassuring.
