Birds and Mammals

An interesting article about a bird hospital in India, which develops into an essay on animal consciousness. FWIW, I'm certain as can be that all mammals and birds are conscious in the same way that we are, with a sense of self in a world that is not-self, and models of reality being used to test possible actions and predict their outcomes. The behaviouralist model of reality requires that all other animals use an entirely different mechanism to produce behavior which is essentially identical to ours (if less elaborate and abstract, at least in those aspects to which we pay attention) and directed toward the same overall ends, which assumption, while not impossible, would certainly set William of Ockham spinning in his grave.
