I've seen some upsetting and fascinating footage on the news the last couple days. I saw meteorologists predict and explain almost to a T exactly what happened. I watched many bright Louisiana residents do nothing to protect themselves.
The most interesting thing on the news about the recent tragedy in New Orleans and surrounding areas is the commentary. I love our media. I saw an image of a man pushing a cart full of food down the street and other activities known to all as LOOTING. These news anchors dropped all sorts of fun tidbits like "events like this or extremely unfortunate and unfortunate more so because of the opportunistic thieves that take advantage of the situation to steal and loot while the power is down and emergency personnel are busy trying to save the residents of New Orleans."
If my city was flooded, with all roads, lines of communication, and supply lines down i would probably take that opportunity to steal some food to feed my starving family too.
In the current state of crisis I'm glad our government has their priorities in order.
I was watching the news this morning before work and there were to back to back press conferences held, not about disaster relief, or how to help make New Orleans inhabitable in the next several months, but OIL.
Now by this point you may be thinking... oh it's one of these oil hating liberal hippies. That is not true. I love oil; it's used to make many useful products like sexual lubricants and other useful products. I also drive an SUV. The difference is I think I should be paying more for it like the rest of the world but I'll touch more on that later.
On the first press conference it was a republican politician from Texas talking about the effects it's going to have on gas prices and the likes on account of refiners and pipelines being affected and shut down due to the hurricane. This fine gentleman took the OPPROTUNITY to explain how in order to reduce gas prices in the near future we should be allowed to drill into un tapped oil wells in Alaska and along our coasts in order to allow the trucks and emergency vehicles to get the those in need for a decent price.
Obviously this man never read much about the environment. What little I know about hurricanes was taught to me by my mother who lived in New Orleans and experienced a hurricane or two first hand (none quite as bad as this, however.) One of the things she explained to me is how warm water, specifically in this case the water of the Gulf of Mexico, allows hurricanes to thrive. I later found out that the water off the Gulf of Mexico is 3 or 4 degrees higher than it usually is. That may not seem like a lot but we have a very fragile ecosystem however warming a body of water that size is an incredible task. What culprit could be possible for warming an entire body of water 4 degrees? The undisputed and factual cause being global warming. What causes global warming? One of the largest contributors is toxic emissions from our cars.
Now that may seem like a lot but follow me here. This is why I was pissed off to the point of uncontrollable laughter.
This OPPROTUNISTIC politician was using this tragedy to push his agenda of tapping into more oil and lower gas prices and making the toxic emissions that cause global warming and warmer water in the gulf much more affordable. This guy was using this hurricane to sell gas and in a DIRECT WAY making sure global warming continued its course and continued to warm our water and ensuring natural disasters like hurricanes are more severe.
This guy is far worse than a looter. He's not lower gas prices for the quality of life of human beings or to feed his family. He's taking a natural disaster and a yet unknown number of deaths to push an agenda that helped in causing those deaths.
As for gas prices, many people already know my position on this but I say raise the prices. If we raise gas prices maybe we'll take a queue from the rest of the world and support alternative means of transportation since so many people won't be driving. If gas prices weren't government controlled and so under priced (the U.K. has long since had much higher gas prices then we have ever paid along with just about everywhere else save for Saudi Arabia) we may cut down on global warming, and have some oil left on the planet for when we need the trucks to get food and water to victims of natural disasters that will in effect become less violent in the case of hurricanes. We may have less obesity from people getting out of their Hummers and walking to work or riding a bike or taking a public transit system such as Oregon's MAX train that will suddenly have more support for when people get tired of paying 5 dollars a gallon.
I support looters, looters are acting to save their selves and ensure their survival. I don't support politicians pushing an agenda so they can sit in more comfortable chairs.
