Chapter 8/? Of Shifting for the Future

He awoke with a yawn and a sinuous stretch, all muscles tightening then relaxing. Blinking sleep from his eyes, he looked around his current habitat and took in his surroundings. The room he was in was different than the last one. This one was a bit larger, the furnishing a bit more ornate. There were no windows or doors, but truthfully he had expected that. They weren't going to make it easy on him.

He pushed off the bed and nearly stumbled, legs trying to fold beneath him. That alone told him the length of his sleep. He had been down long enough for his muscles to weaken and atrophy. Sending a blast of magic through his body, he re-strengthened his body, building it back up to its previous state. Satisfied with his work, he took another careful step his legs steady this time. Moving slowly, he walked around the room, touching the walls as furniture with gentle fingers. They had obviously thought of his comfort this time, not that it mattered to him. Comfort could be created when you could access the power to do so. And he could easily do so.

Delving deep within himself, he pulled up his power core, letting the energy flow through and around him. He took his time and carefully pushed it outward, letting it expand and inch or so at a time. Soon a corona of power swirled around him. He eased his power out more until it filled the entire room. When he tried to push beyond the room he hit a boundary of magic and metal. He snarled and pulled his power back. This time he sent out a tendril of power to test and taste the bars of his cage.

A nasty grin stretched across his lips and he pulled all his power back into his body, locking his core down until he seemed to be nothing more than an ordinary man. It didn't take long for the magic holding him in to lessen and his grin grew. Standing in the center of the room he waited until the magic was at its lowest then released the lock on his power and let it flow out in a single wave. The weakened magic of the cage couldn't stand against the torrent and collapsed with a mute sigh. With one obstacle down he turned his attention to the other. Mere metal wouldn't hold him for long.

Shivering, Dawn looked up and around. The room she was in was warm, a fire burning brightly in the fireplace. She glanced at the windows, but they were all closed.

"A ghost danced over your grave," Dru whispered from the doorway.

Dawn gaped at her. "What?"

"He danced on your grave, a pretty little dance," the seer told her clearly, or at least as clear as Dru ever got. "He wants to dance on your bones. Grind them down until even the Green fades and there's nothing left."

"I don't understand, Dru," the young woman shook her head.

"You will," Dru replied.

"I haven't done anything to want someone to kill me," she pointed out.

"It's not what you did, little Green," Dru crooned. "It's what they did so long ago. He will make them pay. He's waited a long time but he will make them pay."
