When I was in grad school, I had a pretty decent job doing data entry and light office work for a small legal search firm (read: headhunters). I absorbed a lot of info about the New York legal scene without really trying, because I was dealing with it on such a frequent basis.
This was nearly 5 years ago. Turns out, what's left of that knowledge, along with a nice recommendation from one of my friends to a paralegal temp agency, has resulted in a job for me.
Yes! A job. I'll be working as, more or less, a law clerk. Regular hours, opportunity for overtime. This is good. It's in east midtown, not so good, but infinitely, infinitely better than Long Island. And the hourly rate roughly translates to the salary I was making, which means I'm now $200/month ahead (no LIRR tickets to buy).
This is very good.
And, the same friend who recommended me to the temp agency also happens to work in the very same building I'll be in.
That's just cool.
To everyone who's supported me, cheered me, offered advice and contacts, thank you.
To those who are reading this just 'cause, have a drink in my name somewhere. :)
