Kurt Cobain was in the band Nirvana and now is known as a rock legend. Kurt was born February 20, 1967 in California. Cobain was raised by his parents who had some problems and got a traumatic divorce when he was young. He claims that his parents split made him feel insecure and unloved until the day he died. When he was a teenager he was considered “weird” . Kurt would get picked on by jocks and other kids.
One day he spray painted the word queer onto their trucks. He was very talented at playing the guitar, singing, and writing lyrics. As he was a teenager he started to play with his friend Krist Novoselic. They got a lot of their ideas from listening to the Sex Pistils. They later formed a band called Nirvana with Kurt Cobain ( lead guitar, vocals) Krist Novoselic (bassist) and Dave Grohl (drummer).
In the late 80’s they had some demo tapes going around the Seattle area, where they all are from. Then in 1989 they made their first album Bleach. In Britain Nirvana received a lot recognition. In 1991 they were signed to a mega-label the first non mainstream band to do so. That’s when Kurt Cobain and Nirvana started to get big.
Many people think of Kurt Cobain as a screw up or a nobody, that is not true Kurt Cobain created a new genera of music that is now known as grunge. Kurt Cobain wrote the lyrics to all of Nirvana’s songs. In a way all the songs related to his life. He sang about his troubles growing up, his wife, his friends, almost anything he could think of that had an effect on his life in some way. Many people don’t understand Kurt they basically think he’s just another one of those high school drop outs who are going to go no where in life but they don’t know how talented he really is.
Nirvana came out with their fist big single in 1991, it was Smells Like Teen Spirit. That is the song that really showed how talented Kurt Cobain and Nirvana are. Smells Like Teen Spirit made people want to listen to more of Nirvana songs which were just as good as Smells Like Teen Spirit if not better. The band never thought they were going to be as popular as they were but they started a new genera of rock which many people appreciated.
Kurt Cobain was rich and famous. He was married to fellow musician Courtney Love. They had a baby together which they named Frances. Kurt even wrote a song named after her, it is call Frances Farmer will Have Her Revenge On Seattle. He had all these things but he was still depressed all the time. Kurt turned to heroin to soothe the pain of his very painful stomach ulcers. He became a junkie and abused heroin. Things never got better for him.
Kurt Cobain just kept on abusing all kinds of drugs. The only thing the drugs did was make him even more depressed. He attempted to kill himself buy taking over 50 painkillers and washed them down with a bottle of alcohol. Cobain was rushed to the emergency room and after he got out of the hospital Courtney checked him into a rehabilitation clinic. Then about a month later he checked himself out of it.
After they came out with their multi platinum album Nevermind they came out with another album in titled In Utero. This album was very different from Nevermind. Nevermind was more “pop”, In Utero was more grunge and some of the song were depressing. Kurt would sing about rape and all these other un pleasant topics. In Frances Farmer will Have Her Revenge On Seattle the course said “ I miss the comfort in being sad”. Kurt wrote all those songs a couple years before he finally killed himself. They were depressing songs but they were very good and all the fans still appreciated Kurt’s work.
