I loaned princess_jules the entire Fruits Basket manga series (to date). This makes me squee. I'm kind of an enabler at times: I love to share stuff I love. Yeah, I kind of miss having the manga at home, but I'm sooooo super bouncy right now because she's enjoying reading the series ( Read more... )

Okay, this is bugging me, so maybe you know the answer: what's the correct spelling--furuba or fruba? The manga says it's the former, but the anime says it's the latter. Since I discovered the manga first, I tend to spell it furuba. I'd rather spell it correctly, but I don't know which way is correct. Any input?

There is no "fr" character in Japanese, so properly, it would be "furuba" - the first two syllables of fruit (furuto) and the first syllable of basket (basaketo). Whee! I those are correct katakana transcriptions - I don't actually have it in front of me. But, yes. That's that.

I finished with the first 11 - when's the 12th coming out? I'm having withdrawl already, and I want to know the end of the story! (It is the end, right?) I downloaded a bunch of wallpapers today.

Soon, I'm sure, I'll be making icons!

Thank you! I was pretty sure "fruba" wasn't correct because it doesn't sound like Japanese to me. So I always seethed in anger whenever I saw it mispelled on the anime.

Issue 12 is coming out in December. T_T I wish it was coming out sooner. Fruits Basket has a way of making me want to read the next issue IMMEDIATELY. I don't know if it will be the last issue or not. Most manga I've browsed in the store seems to go to 14 or 15 issues, plus I figured we'd see a cover for each member of the Zodiac, so I figure they'll be a couple more.

Of course now I'm feeling a little bad about loaning the books to you, because it means you have to deal with waiting, too. But I'm so very glad you got to read them, because they are so, so good.

I saw on the wallpapers that I downloaded that it's credited to "The Fruba Project" or something like that - my guess is that, since she used an English title, they decided to just use the first syllable of each English word for the English productions. I'm not sure why they felt that was necessary, really, unless they wanted to have a quick way to know which pieces where in which language (or they were afraid us silly Americans would get confused by the extra "u").

December? Oh dear, that's rather far away! I was hoping it would be in the next couple of weeks so I could include it with the first 11 when I sent them back. :) If you can stand to wait an extra day or two after the release, perhaps you'll let me send you #12 anyway?

NO!!! I CANNOT WAIT!!!

...just kidding. :D That would be lovely. I normally don't get them the day they come out anyway. Usually what happens is I get in the mood to go to the bookstore and I discover the next one's been released, and there is much squeeing.

According to Tokyopop's page, issue 12 is coming out on 12.13.05. That's soooooooooo loooooooooong. Hopefully 13 won't be long after that--they'd been releasing about one every two months, but for some reason there was a huge delay between 11 and 12.

Tokyopop is saying there will be 16 issues, which I kind of expected. So that's Tohru + the 13 Zodiac characters + Akito + a last cover, which I'm guessing will be Tohru again, but maybe with Kyo & Yuki, too.

Did you read the sidebars in the manga? In one of the early ones Natsuki Takaya wonders how fans shorten the title, and that's where the "furuba" comes from. Maybe you're right in that they dropped the "u" for the English, but it still rankles me.

Oh, yay, I'm so glad there are going to be more than 12! Though yes, Dec. 13 is rather far away. Oh well. I think I'll survive. :) But I must say, I really am very glad that there's more. :)

Yes, I read most of the sidebars, and I saw the "furuba" one. I'm always going to use that if I shorten it, because "fruba" just looks ugly to me.

Reading those really made me want to go back through my Japanese textbooks - too bad I'm not sure which box they're in! We'll get the bookshelves up soon, though, I hope, so I can unpack all the books and maybe try learning again. I was really peeved with myself for not being able to read even the katakana. >:-O

Yeah, they did close it off pretty well. But, on the other hand, I just knew there had to be more to the story, which is why I was so excited to be able to read the manga. :) I'd enjoy seeing more in the anime, I think, but it's not absolutely essential.

hee! I think we decided it's not incorrect, just the English version. So it's fine! :) But having spent three very difficult semesters supposedly learning Japanese, it just looks very funny two consonants next to each other. ;)

Are you excited for Goblet of Fire, then? I know I am! I loved the PoA movie, much more than the first two, myself.
