Chapter 3

“Ow”, I yelped as Ryan kicked me under the desk in form, “What”

“You were asleep” He smiled

“Oh was I? Um thanks then”

“Bit tired are we?”

“Mmm didn’t sleep much last night. You got any more gear, I feel like I’m going toned some today”

“You’re going to get addicted Sian. And I’m not made of money; I can’t afford to keep getting all this stuff”

“I’m not addicted, I just like it”

“Well I’m not getting you anymore”

“Aw Ryan don’t be like that, please”

“Sian, I’m not being responsible for getting you hooked on heroin”

“Whatever” I moaned and stormed out of the classroom as the bell went

I went into the girls loos where Ryan couldn’t follow me to find Sophie in tears by the sink.

“Hey are you alright” I asked, “They getting to you” I said realising how hard it probably was for posh kids coming into a school full of kids who enjoyed nothing more than teasing them 24:7.

Sophie nodded, “I tried not to, before I came here I watched all the episodes of Waterloo Road back to back to prepare for what it would be like but it’s horrible.”

“Yer I know what it’s like, when everyone here found out that I was a lesbian it was awful, I got called all sorts. But you can’t let them get to you because otherwise they win. If you act ok then they get bored and leave you alone”

“You’re... you’re a lesbian?” She sniffed

“Yer, you have a problem with that?”

“Oh no, I was just surprised”

“Why?”

“Well you’re really pretty and good looking, I bet all the boys fancy you”

My heart raced and butterflies seemed to be swarming around my tummy like mad, “Er thanks haha, you’re not so bad yourself” Our eyes locked together and for a second it felt like there was nobody else in the world, no one could touch us. I stepped closer to her but decided to see if she’d make the first move; I didn’t want to weird her out. She leaned towards me, this was it, I closed my eyes...

“Oh no, I’m going to be late” Sophie gasped and awkwardly looked at me. “Sorry” She muttered and walked out into the corridor. I groaned, I followed her into the corridor but she was already gone. I started walking to my class.

“Wait a there a minuet Sian” I turned to see Mrs Webster coming towards me. I stood there uncomfortably, she hadn’t seen me and Sophie together had she?

“Do you have your work, that you missed on Monday, for me?”

I sighed I’d forgotten about that.

“No Miss”

She sighed in despair, “I see, well why’s that then?”

“I’m sorry Miss I forgot”

“Look Sian, I understand that...” She trailed off as she looked down, “Sian, what happened to your arm?”

I looked down in horror to see my sleeve rolled up and a few bruises on show. I quickly pulled my sleeve to cover them and muttered some rubbish about falling off a bike or something like that.”Um can I go now Miss” I asked her not making eye contact

“Um yes ok” She said uncertainly.

I walked off quickly and didn’t stop until I was well away from the school. I’d be in trouble later but who cares anymore. Detention was easy, extra work I just wouldn’t do and if I got suspended then I would get one or two weeks off school. There wasn’t much else they could do, it’s not like my parents would care if we got letters home or go into the school for meetings with teachers or whatever.

Somehow I ended up back on the estate so I sat on a wall and put my headphones in. Now I was alone and there was nothing to distract me I realised how much I was really craving drugs. I’d only been on it for a couple of days but already I really wanted it, it was the only thing that made me feel alive.

I looked over to see two boys a few years older than me and one was giving the other one money as the other one handed him a package. They were dealing drugs and the dealer was Ryan’s cousin. I quickly ran into my flat where my dad lay stoned on the sofa and my mum had gone out. I ran into my room and picked up the plastic bag hidden under my bed. I looked inside; there was quite a lot of money in it, 100 at least. It was saved from all the times when my dad was sober and felt guilty so gave my money to make up for it all.

I hurried back outside; Ryan’s cousin was still there, on his own now.

“Your Ryan Conner’s cousin aren’t you” I asked him approaching him cautiously

“Who wants to know?” He said coldly

“Um I’m his friend Sian”

“Oh Sian” He smiled with a sort of gleam in his eyes that made me feel uncomfortable, “Little Ry’s girlfriend, oh yer I heard all about you... and what you two get up too” He said and looked down at my chest.

I realised that Ryan hadn’t just been having fantasies about him and me but letting his family think they’re true too. If I hadn’t really wanted the stuff I would of kicked Ryan’s cousin, where it hurts but that probably wouldn’t of been a good idea, he was well respected around here and if anyone would of been worse off for it, it would of been me.

“Mmm” I mumbled

“Well what can I do for you then”

“Um well Ryan said he got some gear off you and I wondered if you could sell me any”

“Ahh, I’m afraid your pocket money might not be enough for what I’m selling babe”

“How much do you need” I said through gritted teeth.

“100 quid” He smirked

I got the money out of the bag and showed it to him

“Oh” He said and got a package out of his bag, “Money first”

I shoved the notes into his hand and snatched away the gear.

“Ta” He smirked. He looked back up, “Oh crap” he said, I turned around, there were two people walking directly towards us and they weren’t any of the estate lot. Ryan’s cousin started running and so did they. That’s when I realised that they were the police, I started running too but I knew I was too late. I‘d stood around being thick for too long and they were faster than me. I kept running in hope I could find an alley to duck into but I knew there was no hope. I ran down a street but to my dismay realised it came to a dead end. I turned around having given up. One of the officers had gone after Ryan’s cousin and the other one, having known he’d won, was coming towards me.

“What’s your name?” He asked obviously not sure whether to be strict and harsh or more sympathetic

“Sian Powers” I said my voice cracking as the tears ran down my cheeks. I hadn’t realised before but I was really scared, I could deal with the estate, I could deal with the kids at school, I could sort of deal with my parents but I realised that the toughness was just an act. I didn’t want to go to prison.

“Ok, well then Sian Powers, I’m arresting you on suspicion on illegal drug use. You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.” He said softly, obviously going for a kinder approach although I could hear the disapproval in his voice. I realised what I must seem to someone like him: a 14 year old druggie, slapper.

I closed my eyes as he cuffed me trying not to let any more tears escape.

“Come on then” He said and led me towards the police car...
