it's good to be home, so far at least. there's a kind of bug that gets in you when you're on the road and even though you're tired from sleeping sitting up in a van hurtling down the road at 90 miles per hour, hungry from too many qwik-stop breakfast lunch and dinners, and sore from playing your heart out and then having to climb into a cramped seat and stay there for eight more hours, even with all the downsides the end of a tour isn't that fun. suddenly you realize that the vacation is over, and that tomorrow you don't get to play a show. tomorrow you don't get to spend time with five of your favorite people in the world, exploring a new town, meeting new people (some of them awesome, some of them shady and most somewhere in between). coming home you realize that tomorrow instead of living the life that you've always dreamed of you have to go to work.
don't get me wrong, seattle is amazing, and the show last night was one coolest nights of my life. i missed all my friends, and much hanging out is going to have to happen sooner rather than later, but at the same time it is a hard adjustment.
a brief rundown of my last three weeks.
modern life is war played seattle on the 12th. we didn't play but for me it was kind of the start of tour. the show was absolutely incredible. the next morning, bright and early we picked up the suburban from enterprise and realized exactly how small they really were, and exactly how much stuff we were bringing. somehow we made it work. rollin out of town to LA i didn't think there was any way we'd make it, suburbans are way smaller than vans and we were all feeling it on the 23 hour drive that opened our tour.
sink with cali was amazing.
i don't remember which bands played which days, but verse, MLIW, killing the dream, and blue monday all played standout sets. i had never seen verse before and i lost my mind, more than i ever have at a show.
spent some time with katie mitchell while i was down there, that girl is so cool that seeing her almost bums me out because i know that she lives 1200 miles away and that nothing can really ever happen between us. i guess i'm just thankful that i can have a person like that in my life, with or withour the romance.
got to catch up with isaac and eli at the fest too, it was real good to see my boys. seeing her and them i ended up missing some bands i really wanted to see (more to pride, one up) but i guess that's the way it goes. i picked up the new one up record and it is REAL good. if you see it buy it. our response at the fest was super good, better than i expected. better than i hoped, it was great seeing seattle kids singing along next to bay area kids and socal kids. hardcore is rad.
then we went on tour with blue monday, ktd, verse, and the physical challenge, we've been friends with BM and ktd forEVER, and it was awesome to get to know the phys dudes better. those three bands are some of the most stand up dudes i've ever met and it was great to spend time with them and share a stage with them. but seriously VERSE. best dudes ever, with possibly the best LP of the year (its only serious rivals are the champ and outbreak, i think) it was amazing seeing them night after night. the best part about the whole package is that we all went off for each others bands, so even the mediocre shows were way fun. the week we spent in california was definitely my favorite tourweek ever. i even got to see decker before she runs off to scotland. i miss that girl.
it was wierd though, because for the first tour i've ever been on there was no zach. he couldn't make it because he needed to work and save money for his move, which we all totally understand, but it was hard not having him around. on the good side, the fill in we picked up ANDY knows how to party in a major way. we didn't know each other all that well before we left, but now i count him as one of my best friends. love the dude to death, he's a perfect fit for the answer and a beautiful beautiful man.
he's also going through something really hard right now, so please keep him and his family in your thoughts and if it applies in your prayers.
sometimes the worst things seem to happen to the best people.
continuing on, after a great week with those bands we did something a little goofy.
we drove from gilman st in berkely to providence rhode island in three days. 44 hours non stop, 8 hours at a motel 6, and then 13 more hours to a show with outbreak. it was kind of silly, and thoroughly exhausting. the first day in the car was alright if a little boring, but after that it became a way of life. it was just the way things were, like driving was life and there was nothing outside of it. kind of crazy, but i swear that was the way it felt. it also felt real good to be done, i'll tell ya that much.
suprisingly we all managed to keep our cool for that whole drive, and nobody even complained. it was really awesome to see the whole country, garrett wanted to move to every fucking podunk city we came to. what a hilarious kid. but i was glad when it was over and we had a couple days with shorter drives. the long drives gave me a lot of time to think, but a lot of that was spent missing a girl who's far away now. i'm looking forward to the next time i get to see her.
the shows with outbreak and champion in the northeast and eastern canada were awesome. the reactions we got were small, but excited and we did well on merch so i think kids liked us. i'm so glad we got the opportunity to get out there with two such amazing bands, full of awesome dudes. it was a chance of a lifetime and i think we capitalized on it as well as possible. spending time out there was great, i got to see a good amount of providence RI and massachusates (sometime ask me about waltham) and the surrounding countryside. i like it out there, not as much as i love seattle or northern california, but its a good place.
canada was rad too, montreal has the most beautiful people i have ever seen.
the interior of canada was sweet as well, the shows were all smaller and the kids seemed to be more metalcore but they gave us a chance and some of them were into it. champion is a fucking amazing band, and seeing them 10 nights in a row was an good experience for me, and i think for the answer too. seeing a band like that, all road hardened and serious (but still having fun) was good.
then we came home.
the last three days deserve an entry of their own, so i think i'm going to wrap this up.
go listen to promises kept.
