Rogue and Jubilee sat quietly on Rogue’s bed, discussing the events of the last few days, when the door to their room flew open unexpectedly.
Both girls jumped from the bed, landing in defensive stances before realizing that the person who entered was their third roommate, Kitty. Kitty stopped dead in her tracks right inside the door and stared wide-eyed at her friends. All three froze for a moment, no one sure exactly how to act, and then, without any of them realizing how or why, they were wrapped in a three way hug, tears streaming down each of their faces.
After several minutes, they broke apart and offered each other watery smiles. Jubilee and Rogue sat back down on Rogue’s bed and Kitty sat on her own bed a few feet away. She could tell that she had interrupted an important conversation between her roommates and a tiny part of her felt left out.
“Oh, Kit, you have no idea how good it is to see you and know that you guys have been safe for the last few days,” Jubes finally broke the silence.
Kitty gave a slightly guilty smile. She had been thankful to be at the safe house with Piotr and the children, but had been worried sick about her friends.
“I think I have a pretty good idea, Jubes. I’ve been worried sick about the two of you,” she responded. “What happened? How come you guys didn’t make it to the safe house with the rest of us?” Kitty was hoping to get more information from her friends than they had gotten from Ms. Munroe when she came to get them from the safe house and bring them back to the mansion. All she knew was that a few of the children had been held hostage and that Dr. Grey was dead.
Rogue patted Jubilee’s leg and answered Kitty’s questions. “Well, Jubes was one of the students that was held hostage by that psycho freak. And I ended up going to Boston with Bobby, Logan, and John,” she explained, her voice catching when she mentioned John.
Kitty’s eyes filled with tears and she leaned across the few feet of space between the beds to hug Jubilee again.
“Oh, goodness, Jubes,” she cried. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t save you. Are you okay now?”
Jubilee offered a shaky smile. “I’m fine, Kit. It was scary because we had no idea what was going on, but they didn’t torture us or anything. Just kept us locked in this cold, dark cell. But then Ms. Munroe and that new teleporter guy saved us.”
A look of confusion crossed Kitty’s face. “There’s a new guy that teleports?”
Her friends nodded. “Guess you didn’t meet him, yet?” Jubilee asked.
Kitty shook her head.
“Well, he’s blue and has a tail,” her friend offered.
“And he saved my life,” Rogue added, making Kitty’s eyes go wide again.
“Well, what happened to you?” she asked.
Rogue took a deep breath and plunged ahead with her story about how she, Bobby, and John had helped Logan escape from Stryker and how they had decided to go to Boston to try to meet up with Ms. Munroe and Dr. Grey. She told Kitty everything, including the events leading up to Dr. Grey’s death and John leaving with Magneto.
By the end of Rogue’s recitation, all three girls were in tears again. A soft knock on the door startled them all.
“Who is it?” Jubilee finally managed to ask, furiously wiping away her tears.
“It’s me and Piotr,” Bobby replied. “Can we come in?”
The three girls exchanged a glance and all nodded.
Kitty called out, “Yeah, it’s open.”
The boys entered and Kitty gasped when she saw Bobby. He had very obviously been crying and she was not used to seeing her friend look so vulnerable. She got up to hug him as Piotr walked over to exchange hugs with Rogue and Jubilee.
After greetings had been exchanged, Piotr took a seat next to Kitty and Bobby sat between Rogue and Jubilee. John’s absence was obvious. The six of them had become fairly close and most of the younger students referred to them as “the 6 pack”. Now, each felt as if they were missing a limb or vital organ.
Piotr finally broke the silence with one word. “Why?” he asked, his gaze falling on Jubilee, Bobby and Rogue.
Bobby started to answer, but Rogue put her hand on his arm and shook her head slightly. He looked confused, but allowed her to speak.
“He felt like he didn’t belong,” she said.
“But, that’s ridiculous!” Kitty exclaimed. “The six of us were always together. How could he feel like he didn’t belong?”
“It’s ridiculous to us, Kit, because once upon a time, we all had families that loved us. Granted, some of them didn’t take our mutant status that well,” she said, aware that Bobby had gripped her hand. “And some of them were taken from us in other ways,” she continued, her gaze flitting to Jubilee and Piotr. “But the point is, we all had it at one point in time, even if we didn’t by the time we got here.”
“But John never had it,” Bobby said softly, so many pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place in his mind.
Rogue squeezed his hand. “No, sugar, he didn’t. And no matter how much we all cared about him and included him, he still felt like an outcast.”
“Are you saying it’s our fault that John left?” Jubilee asked.
“No, love,” Piotr answered. “She’s saying that it’s definitely not our fault. She’s saying that John had a lot more problems than we ever knew about.”
Kitty asked, “Well, Rogue, please don’t take this the wrong way, but how do you know that?”
“Because she touched him,” Bobby answered.
The others gasped in shock. Rogue had left that one tiny detail out of her story when she told Jubilee and Kitty what happened and Bobby hadn’t thought to mention it when he told Piotr. Bobby squeezed her hand and Rogue explained about stopping John from attacking the police at Bobby’s house by touching him long enough to weaken him and gain control of his powers to put out the fires that were burning.
“Unfortunately, we were so busy running and then the missile hit the plane and I got sucked out and then we ran into Magneto and Mystique and I didn’t have time to sort through the thoughts and feelings that I had gotten from John until it was too late,” she concluded, hanging her head.
“Hey,” Bobby said, nudging her until she lifted her head and met his eyes. “Don’t. Nothing you could have said or done would have changed anything, either.”
The others voiced their agreement and Rogue finally nodded her own agreement.
“Do you think the professor will try to get him back?” Kitty asked.
“Get who back?” a voice asked from the doorway. All five heads turned to see Logan standing there. They had been so wrapped up in their discussion, that none of them had heard the door open again.
“John,” Rogue answered in a soft voice.
“I don’t know, but the professor is holding a meeting down in the dining hall in five minutes. You’re all supposed to attend,” he responded. He knew Rogue felt guilty about not recognizing John’s feelings sooner. He had tried to tell her that nothing she could have done would have changed his mind, but she didn’t want to accept that. He hoped her friends had had better luck convincing her.
The five friends got up and headed for the door. Their whole lives had been turned completely upside down in the last few days, but Logan had no doubt that they’d all get past it and be stronger because of it.
