~~Jean,~~ the Professor began, then simply let the communication fade. For once in his life, he was out of optimism, and had no words of encouragement left to give. In fact, he couldn't recall the last time he had felt even a spark of hope. Was it when Bishop and the haggard, hugely pregnant Cipher from the future had arrived three weeks earlier? Or when the plan had been concocted to twist time so that this attack never occurred? Maybe it had been during his last meeting with the President and Beast?
He didn't know. Worse yet, he couldn't bring himself to care, or to feel much more than a dull disappointment that it all had come to this. That, and a strange feeling of loathing for himself.
