Basically, Ellen does not want to leave. They had a fight, he was angry at her, she was upset with him, and she doesn’t want to walk out on him because she wants him to understand that she is not going to leave because her feelings are hurt - which they are, but that’s beside the point. She doesn’t know what to do, she doesn’t know how to fix it, assuming there is a way, and her religion is very important to her; she doesn’t feel she was wrong, she doesn’t want to apologize to him first because she doesn’t want to say anything that will look like she might be considering the possibility of having been wrong. In her life this is her main pillar of certainty. She will not abridge it. But at the same time, he is her other certainty! So. Uh. Yeah. She is totally at a loss to how to deal with this and so apparently is he.

That makes me awwwwwww. ELLEEEEN. He actually assumed she was lingering because she wanted him to somehow expound upon his apology and admit further fault. And having definitely taken note that she did not accept his apology in turn, he sort of assumed the worst about his odds and chose to slink off and hide rather than continue to endure the awkwardness and all around failure. He does not handle strife very well, but he really does not handle it very well in his personal life, and he really, really does not handle it well when it is in his personal life and he is lost. His retreat could be interpreted as a concession on top of his attempted apology. Whatever they're fighting about, not worth it. She wins.
