Parks are weird...

Oct 30, 2003 07:03

So I finally managed to get out of the apartment yesterday to go for a walk, and I had a pretty good time. Except I stopped at Central Park for a little while, hoping to get some reading in, but I almost got ran over instead.
[NYC] Central Park [NYC]
Like a white dove among crows or diamond among common rocks, Central Park is a welcome refuge from the otherwise nature-lacking urban jungle of New York...a city that, while still becoming, will never be clean or new again. But here, beauty is to be found amid the plethora of trees and open green space, coalescing with cobbled walkways, dirt paths, and the occasional manner of a children's carousel or some such whimsical attribute. Few taverns and cafes line the edges of the park, as well as the famous Tavern on the Green, and the occasional vendor may set up base here during the long summer months. Several rocky protrusions appear to have been purposely placed amid the meadows of Northern Central Park, in lieu of benches there.

The low jazzy sound of someone playing the saxaphone wafts through the park. If one were to follow the sound back to it's source one might find some old jazz hound reliving his glory days, or maybe an former president that should not be let out of the house without his shock coller on, but what you would actualy find is a young goth kid that is rather good at what he is doing. Yeah, that is a good way to set the scene, jazzy music for the small number of people brave enough to walk the park this late at night.

Quark appears out of a small thicket of bushes off to the side of the main road going through the park, which offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Although he's been working on walking more than teleporting lately, he's decided to come down here to get in some late-night reading for his English class. His class is working on Shakespeare's Hamlet, and he actually enjoys it quite thoroughly. Scanning the park for an empty bench, he sits down under a lit lamppost and begins to read.

Shane's riding his bike through the park, sweatshirt zipped up with the hood over his head. He's also wearing a plain navy-blue backpack, which thuds gently every now and then as he goes over a dip in the path. Impossible to tell why he's out alone in the park tonight.

Quark glances around the park as he begins to settle into the bench but, listening to the quiet music coming from somewhere across part of the park, decides to move to a different empty bench closer to the source of quiet, jazzy music. As he goes though, he accidentally drops his Hamlet book on the ground. Leaning over to pick it up, he stops part way on his way up to stare in shock as a bicyclist is about to run right into him!

Geist seems to be leaning against the lamppost that Qurak sits under. Of course he is leaning against the other side so he does not see the other guy. Of course no one has noticed that the lamp post is actualy partialy inside of his back. That is the problem with not having a body. Too bad he does not nottice what he is doing, it could save him some problems later.

Shane notices Quark just in the nick of time, eyes widening. He pulls hard on the bicycle's handlebars and squeezes the brakes, jerking to a clumsy stop a few feet away from the other teen and ending up thrown a little ways away from the vehicle. Oof.
Being careful not to drop his book again, Chris runs over to the bicyclist and stops next to him, quickly asking, "Are you alright? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get in your way. I was just picking up my book..." His face is slightly red, and he's feeling thoroughly embarassed from the whole ordeal. Go figure...all he wanted to do was get his English homework done for tomorrow!

Ooof? That is not the sort of sound that should be part of a jazz solo. Neither is the squeeling of brakes. Geist decides to stop playing, and actualy pay attention to what is going on around him. He turns to take in the scene and calls out, "Hey, are you alright?" The whole while he does not notice that he has a lamp post sticking up out of his left shoulder before he walks over to the two others.

Shane pushes himself back to his feet and moves his bike to an upright position with him, flipping out the kickstand and propping it up. He winces slightly and looks at his palms, which are pretty scraped up and dirty from the fall. "Yeah.. I'll be okay," answers the teen, glancing at Quark. "S'not your fault. I should've been paying better attention."

Quark nods, glancing around the park to make sure that there aren't any other people about to run them over in the middle of the road. "I can't let you take all the blame. It's dark out, and there are only so many lamps. Can't see all day long, you know?" He leaves out the implied 'unless you're a mutant with special vision', but hey, they -do- exist. Blinking in mild confusion, however, he glances back off to his left and sees someone walking towards them...only the person seems to be almost transparent. In the dark, it's hard to tell, but being this close to Halloween and all...Chris doesn't shout out, but he is certainly too shocked to say anything. He can still stare, though.

Geist is stared at. He stops a second on his walk over so he can pull himself together and project a more solid imiage into the minds near to him. There, he looks as solid as anyone else now, and he is not even the slightest bit on the unfocused side. Once the lanky goth makes it to Shane and Quark he says, "Dude, are you like alright?" Yes, look like a vampire wannabe, speak like a surfer.

Shane doesn't look up at Geist, instead preoccupying himself with his hands. He tugs a crumpled napkin out of his jeans pocket and starts wiping away some of the asphault grime, wincing some more. "Yeah, just a scrape," Shane mumbles. "I think I'll live."

Quark frowns even more as the image seems to go from being transparent to being completely normal. Shrugging it off for the moment, he notices the sax and smiles in spite of himself, saying "I like the music. It's pretty fitting for this time of night." Turning back to the biker, he asks concernedly, "Is your bike ok? I didn't see if you had to hit something to slow down or not..." Pausing, he also adds, "I didn't get your name. I'm Chris. Chris Parker."

Geist nods. "Good. Living is a good thing..." Geist would know, he once spent nearly a year dead. Well, not dead per-say, more in a coma, but he thought he was a ghost the whole time. To Quark he says, "Thanks, I like coming out here to practice. Everyone calls me Geist."

Shane bends to the side a little and tilts his head, eyes darting over the bicycle frame. "Looks like it. Wasn't very expensive anyway." The scruffy-haired boy straightens himself up again and shoves his hands in his sweatshirt pockets, finally noticing Geist and giving him a nod of greeting. "Pleased to meet you, Chris. I'm Shane."

Quark grimaces slightly, frustrated that he had to cause damage to someone else's property, albeit indirectly. Still having that strange feeling about this 'Geist', he decides to act on a small hunch. With a focused thought, Chris' eyes turn to a bright neon-green hue--although, in this dark, it might be hard to notice. As this happens, Chris' eyes start to produce x-rays in his line of vision; at the same time, his visual spectrum automatically shifts further down until his eyes can interpret the effects of the x-rays as they hit solid objects. Passing a quick glance over Shane, he's glad to see that he is indeed a human being...But when his glances passes over Geist, the shock at watching the x-rays harmlessly pass through his "body" causes his eyes to turn back to normal. After the typical bout of temporary, nauseating blindness, which always seems to follow his x-ray vision trick, Chris points at Geist and stutters, "Y-you're n-not human. What are you?" As far as he's concerned, it's a ghost, and he's totally ready to teleport out of here and just go to -bed-...sheesh.

Shane quirks a brow and gives Quark a bemused look, following the other boy's gaze to Geist, who looks just like a normal human as far as he can tell. He obviously didn't catch Quark's little green eye trick, otherwise he might put two and two together.

Geist's image should still be there even if Quark has just blinded himself. He looks a little annoyed. Annoyed enough that he goes a bit...fuzzy, almost out of focus, at the edges. Also he is so annoyed that he is being pointed at like that, that he forgets about the saxaphone and it sorta seems to disapear. "Dude, like what are you talking about? And, like, how would you know that? Are you like a mutant too?"

Quark blinks, suddenly putting two and two together himself. So it wasn't a ghost...it was just a mutant. Smiling in spite of himself, again embarassed that he would think a ghost would be walking in Central Park trying to play some jazz music, he replies, "Yes, I'm a mutant. And I'm assuming by your saying 'too' that you are also a mutant?" Frowning, apparently still puzzled, he replies, "I have a power that allows me to see in a form of x-ray vision, so I could tell that you don't have any bones. Or at least, the part that I'm seeing. That being said, though...if you're not a ghost, then how come you don't have bones?"

Shane smiles faintly to himself and chuckles at something. He doesn't say anything, though, content just to listen to the other two. In fact, he goes back to wiping the dirt from his hands, absently brushing at his scraped skin.

Geist sighs. He pulls his feat up under him and sits in mid air in the lotus position. Slowly he sinks back to the ground. "Bones? At the moment I do not even have, like, a body. Well, not realy. I do have a body, but I kinda left it in a coffee shop down town. Place called the Sanctuary. They are mutant friendly, and don't mind too much that I tend to leave my self there when I need a safe place when I wanna go for a walk."

Quark blinks, nodding slowly. Now -that's- some kind of freaky. Shrugging it off, he replies with a weak grin, "That's pretty cool. I can teleport too, but that's more useful for actually moving around. It comes in handy." Yawning, he glances at his watch and realizes he needs to get his reading done. And he has more work to do back at his apartment. Scowling at the lack of time, she says, "I should probably get going back home...I have some things to do before going to bed, and I need to get them done before tomorrow. It was...interesting, to say the least," he adds with a small grin. Hesitating, he's unsure as to whether he should try and shake Geist's hand, but decides against it. Waving to Shane and Geist, he turns around and focuses on home, so he teleport away.

In a small burst of light and a mini cloud of smoke, Quark disappears into thin air.
the Geist of it...Err, I mean the gist of it. :-)

Anyway, I better get going. It's pretty early this morning, and I have school to go to. Wish me good luck on my Physics test.

OOC: From now on, unless I specifically mention that the entry is ICly locked to myself, friends, or whatever, assume that it is ICly open to the public. :-) Have a good day!

shane, geist
