recently I read something that really struck a nerve with me. the person who wrote it at one time I believe read this, if she still does I do not know.
She was writing about how society (and in general celebrities/fashion magazines/the big wigs) make people look a certain way. How this has changed. Now, nobody goes criticizing fashion with me just letting it slip by. She said take a magazine today and one from 1985 and open them both. Now look at the size of the models. I say, take a magazine from 2005, 1985, and 1965. Hello Twiggy-esque thinness. Popularity of weight goes in and out of style. Yes, in the 80's the models were a bit heavier, and that's not a bad thing, I also don't think it's a good thing. I just think it is.
Yes, I see Carmen Electra and say "day-um, I want to have her stomach, I want to be that beautiful." Honestly, most of the celebrities women want to look like are the ones who look healthy, although slim, healthy. We don't see Lindsey Lohan's ribs sticking out and say "Oooh, I wish I looked like that." Junk in the trunk is hot. Hips are hot. Look at the collections for this fall, many designers have a certain style of dress that SHOW OFF THE HIPS.
Yes, when I see a chunky girl I do feel a little sad, because despite the fact that I'm a size 4 I still find myself fat so I feel for her. this "fatness" is not media driven, it's health driven. It's the fact that I want to work out more often than I actually get to, it's the fact that I see the food I eat and I get upset, I should eat healthier, but it doesn't have to do with what size dress Britney Spears fit into pre-pregnancy. If celebrities are inspiring women to eat properly and exersize I think it's a good thing. And most of the models and actresses and whatevers that people talk about the size of, they're naturally that size and they just work out a lot to be toned. Yes, some do take it to extremes, get sick, look bad (even, IMHO Jessica should get some of her junk back), but so do "regular" people. And if I were so concerned about looking like the celebrities I think are gorgeous I'd have to gain weight, Catherine Zeta-Jones is bigger than me, as is Elizabeth Taylor, as was Jean Harlow and Marilyn Monroe.
I've worked myself up and I know this isn't well written, I'm just sick and tired of hearing "oh it's because Christina is so skinny that she has an eating disorder." NONONO, take it from a girl who HAD/HAS an eating disorder, Christina may inspire me to work out those extra ten minutes, but so does my aunt victoria. So should everyone just not work out and eat badly so as to not upset the "chunky" girls who stay chunky on principle, or because they don't have the drive to lose weight and gain muscle?
