I know I had originally said good-bye to my lj over a year ago, but sometimes I'll come here and remember how excited I used to get when I had an idea for an entry. I have no idea who will read this, but I think this will be great to let out on here.
I'm currently a little bored at my promotions internship at Sony Music (who woulda thunk, huh?) because it's Wednesday afternoon... it's pretty dead come Wednesday afternoon. A few dubs here and there, order forms, mail-outs, maybe post some tour-dates, but that's really it. The real action is on Wednesday morning: soundscan charts, mediabase charts, muchmusic/muchmoremusic/muchloud/muchvibe video rotation charts, etc. It's actually really fun to do and very interesting to observe. Being in a record label environment has really shown me how the record labels do care about their artists. Kudos to Sony.
But okay, on to my subject: 2010 will be the best year of our lives. Not just for me. For everyone. Let's look at myself for a sec, a big part of why this year will rock is due to all my experiences from 2009. I'll try to list them to the best of my ability in order of occurrence:
- Went to Punta Cana
- Volunteered at Canadian Music Week 2009 and was able to interview Mother Mother and see a whole bunch of rad shows for free (including BLOC PARTY!!)
- Graduated from Humber College with honour standings in Radio Broadcasting
- Became a member of the Edge Intern Army aka the coolest gig EVER
- Was front-row-centre for my ultimate favourite band: Blink-182
- Became an intern for Sony Music Canada within the promotions department
- Quit my part-time retail job at American Eagle
- Got hired as coordinator at an independent radio promotions company (found out on New Years Eve, have yet to start!)
Now this is just my list of the big stuff that occurred to me. This list could be longer; I went to a gazillion concerts (most of them for free!) and was able to meet a whole bunch of bands. But everything I listed all share one thing: everything I did this year involved meeting new people. Getting connections. Networking. And not just in a business manner, but in a friendly manner as well. I think everything I did last year, and everyone I met last year, will have something to do with what happens this year.
Not only that, but as you can see 2009 was a super busy and kick-ass year. So naturally, 2010 has to top that. This optimism makes me feel like this year won't be good only for me, but for you too. Think about it. Your year was obviously different than mine, but the same principles apply; everything that occurred to you last year will have some type of positive effect to make this year what it is and will be. I really hope I'm making sense right now.
2010 is the first year I'm out of school, and working in the real world. Doesn't that mean 2010 should be the year I'm scared out of my freakin' mind? Sure, but I see that fear in a positive manner; you need that fear to get yourself moving. To make things happen. That's what someone from the Intern Army told me during one shift. When he said it, I just looked at him and gasped, "Jeez louise, you're so right!" And now look at him, he's the new Intern Army Coordinator. I'm not sure why things always seem to come my way, but I firmly believe it's due to the fact that I haven't stopped moving. And I don't plan on stopping anytime soon because I'm having the most fun I've ever had. Don't give into the fear of the new year, use it.
If you think it, if you say it, if you believe it... 2010 will be the best year of our lives.
