Summary: Bad news was never easy, especially to a nice patient. Gerard Way hadn’t ever trashed the room, complained about the lack of coverage on his hospital gown and his visitors had always come within visiting hours.
"So you’re saying I have four days to live?" The doctor nods solemnly. Bad news was never easy, especially to a nice patient. Gerard Way hadn’t ever trashed the room, complained about the lack of coverage on his hospital gown and his visitors had always come within visiting hours. Except for his wife, whose hours had been expanded to 24-7 over the past few years. She was always by Gerard’s side, always smoothing whatever hair was left, just talking to him for hours. She never talked about his health, or rather, the declining state of it, at least not in front of him. She managed to maintain some of his dignity, and the doctor admired that in such a person.
"I’m sorry, Gerard." The doctor turns to Lindsey. He feels a bit emotional, even though, as a doctor, death surrounds him every moment of the day and if he was this attached to every patient, he wouldn’t be able to live.
Lindsey bites her lip, conflicting and contradicting emotions clouding her face. She is saddened, yes, but also a little relieved. It’s finally over. No worrying about comas or hospital bills or remission. No more thinking that one day he’ll go to sleep and never wake up. No more bad food or cramped backs or disease-ridden furniture. He has an expiration date. The reality of that sinks in and she bites her lip so hard it draws blood. "Do you have any . . . requests?" Lindsey shakes her head. "I’ll make sure he’s as comfortable as possible," the doctor assured. Gerard raises his hand feebly.
"I have something to say, er, request from Lindsey." She shuffles to his bedside, leaning in close.
"At my funeral, the only person wearing black will be me." Lindsey feels the familiar tug of wanting to laugh and cry at the same time, and as she nods, she does.
-
From then on, Lindsey spends every waking moment possible with him. As she hugs her knees tight to her chest, struggling to find sleep next to Gerard, she thinks that the act of being folded up in the hospital bed has become near habit. However, she also believes that it has become more meaningful because of the inevitable. She will find herself missing it once he’s gone.
-
Gerard passes peacefully, four days later, just as the doctor had predicted. The funeral was a quiet affair, with every guest clad in vibrance they struggled to feel and eventually did, as per Gerard’s final wish.
-
Alfred Lord Tennyson once wrote, "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." It is etched into Lindsey’s mind; she carries it with her in everything she does. She whispers the familiar phrase before clutching the rose to her chest and placing it on Gerard’s grave.
