Alex slumps down in his seat, arms crossed, and refuses to meet Darwin’s eyes. “We’ve talked about that,” he grumbles, obviously a little more than upset.
Wincing, Darwin busies himself with parking the car. It is a sore topic and he probably should have stayed away from it. It had been very difficult, at first, to negotiate their relationship, and Alex still worries about it.
“I’m sorry, Alex,” Darwin says when he’s finally able to turn his full attention back to the conversation.
Silence stretches between them in the car as Alex calms himself down. Darwin wishes he could help, but when Alex’s bad mood is his fault, there’s usually nothing to be done. There have been fights that have resulted in over a week of silence. Then again, they don’t always have to rely on talking to understand each other. Alex hasn’t moved to leave the car yet, at least.
Eventually, Alex relaxes, reaching out to shove Darwin in the shoulder before taking his hand again. He offers Darwin a small smile, a silent apology, but says nothing.
“Are you going to tell them soon?” Darwin asks. It might be another mistake, but it’s as close as they’ve come to talking about this in a while and Alex is never comfortable bringing it up. Better to get it all over with at once.
Alex takes in a sharp breath, his grip tightening almost painfully. “Darwin,” he says slowly.
“I know it’s none of their business,” Darwin says quickly, turning slightly in his seat to face Alex. “I just thought-”
Alex cuts him off. “No,” he says. “You’re right. I want them to know. I just don’t know how to tell them. I don’t want it to be a big deal because-I just don’t think it’s a big deal.”
Darwin smiles, popping open the compartment between the driver and passenger seat. He pulls out a small pin and hands it to Alex. “I got this for you. Thought it might look good next to that rainbow pin on your hat,” he says. Alex doesn’t go in for big shows of pride beyond the verbal, but he hates feeling like he’s hiding, as well.
The casing on the pin catches a glare from the streetlamp outside as Alex turns it in his palm. The pin is small, maybe smaller than Alex’s rainbow pin, but the flag is clear, the purple stripe offsetting the white, grey, and black. Now, maybe, Alex won’t have to talk about his asexuality. It will just be there in the open for the others to acknowledge or not.
“You don’t have to wear it,” Darwin says when Alex’s silence stretches on too long.
Alex looks back up at him, and there’s a smile on the edge of his lips. “I want to,” he says, turning his attention back to the pin and his hat in his lap, fastening it in place with care.
Once the pin is secure, Alex pulls his hat back on with a grin and asks, “So, were you going to come up and play Brawl, or what?”
“Only if you’re ready to lose,” Darwin says, glad that Alex’s mood has returned to normal-better than normal, maybe. Alex is usually happy after X-Men meetings, after being included and loved by so many people at once, and Darwin hates to ruin it.
“In your dreams,” Alex growls playfully, popping open his door and making a break for the dorm.
They race to Alex’s room-Alex wins, of course-and play games for the rest of the night, tucked together on the couch. Alex doesn’t let his hat out of his sight, either.

So, so much love for this. I love Alex, the way he acts like he hates the affection but (not so) secretly loves it, the way he got involved with the X-Men, his past crushes on Charles and Erik, how he is so very Alex. And Darwin, oh ever-so-awesome-and-understanding Darwin. The mentions of Angel and Emma making out on the couch and getting everyone drunk is just so. Oh girls, how I adore you. And, and, and SEAN THE SERIAL HUGGER. RAVEN THE RESCUER. Oh yes.
