“You two are so boring,” Raven says as she marches into Charles’ study, the boys in tow.

Charles makes a point to set his bishop down on the chessboard before looking up at Raven with a quizzical brow and saying, “I wasn’t aware it was our job to entertain.” Erik doesn’t even deign look up.

“It’s the least you could do,” Alex says, flopping down on the couch, much to its distress. “You force us to train all day and you even make us cook dinner and do the dishes! We deserve something in return.”

Hank makes a small noise from the door, where he’s lingering. “They do spend a great deal of time looking for Shaw and making plans with the CIA,” he says quietly. Sean lobs a pillow at him.

“Yes, we do,” Charles says with a small glare at Sean. “Thank you for acknowledging our input. Moira’s already in bed with a migraine from all the paperwork and I’m afraid my back will never recover.”

“You’re such a baby,” Raven says, leaning over Charles’ shoulder to grab his half empty wine glass and take a sip (sip being a very generous term). She ignores Charles reproving frown entirely. Across the table, Erik might be smirking, but it’s hard to tell with his head bent over the chessboard. Setting down the wine glass again before Charles can form a proper response, Raven puts her hands high and Charles’ shoulders and begins to knead with her thumbs (and, okay, he is more than a little stiff).

The noise that tears itself from Charles chest would be classified as obscene on even the most lenient of scales, but Raven is used to it and barely notices. She and Charles, however, are the only ones who remain unaffected. Hank disappears out the door without a word, the tips of his ears glowing red; Sean and Alex share a look that is somewhere between amused and disgusted, before Sean begins to giggle and Alex kicks him in the shin; and Erik finally looks up from the chessboard.

Charles tips his head forward, eyes closed and back arching into Raven’s hands as she moves across his shoulders and upper spine. He’s nearly purring, but the noise is interspersed with quiet gasps when Raven reaches a particularly large knot. “Your fingers are simply,” Charles starts to say, but has to stop to moan, biting his lip against it. “Simply divine,” he finishes, breathless.

It’s at this point that the pictures start shaking in their frames and the light bulbs in their fixtures and the ornate grate in front of the fireplace warps itself entirely, not that anyone around the chessboard seems to notice.

“We need to leave,” Sean says, already at the door before the words are out of his mouth, Alex hot on his tail. Alex pauses in the doorway and almost calls back to Raven, but shakes his head and flees when he catches the look in Erik’s eye.

Charles hums softly and glances toward the door with one eye. “Wonder what that was about,” he mumbles, trailing off into contented, murmuring praise as Raven pushes his neck forward once more.

Very slowly, Erik leans forward and tips his king. “Raven,” he says, voice low as he looks up at her, past the question in Charles’ gaze.

“What?” Raven asks, grinning back at him. “Don’t tell me you want one, too.”

Erik’s eyes harder a little more. “You should leave,” he growls.

“Mmm, yes,” Charles says, although it’s anyone’s guess to whom he’s speaking, with his eyes shut and his hands braced on his armrests.

“Fine,” Raven sighs dramatically and pulls her hands away. Charles whines softly at the loss, his eyes snapping open and focusing on Erik across from him.

Grabbing Charles’ wine glass again, and this time not putting it back, Raven makes her way out of the room, calling over her shoulder, “I’ll just leave you two to your boring, old-man habits, then.”

Charles and Erik continue to stare at each other, gazes heated, as Raven’s footsteps fade down the hall. The door swings shut with the curl of Erik’s finger.

“If you want to start where she left off, I promise I won’t be boring,” Charles says with a smirk.

Erik doesn’t even try to be careful of the chessboard in his haste.
