Warning: Allusions to nonlethal pet abandonment...

Erik's concern at Charles' lateness getting back to the mansion only increases when his friend climbs out of car in the driveway not only shivering but totally soaking wet. "What the hell..." He automatically strips off his coat, intending to throw it around the telepath's hunched over shoulders.

"I don't have time to explain right now." The younger man cuts him off. There's FURY in his voice...the likes of which Erik has never heard. "I've probably lost one to hypothermia already."
And then he's pulling a blanket nest of bedraggled KITTENS from the passenger seat. There are 4 of them. One black as ink, another tabby and the rest a mixture of torteishell and calico. All are tiny. Scarcely past having their eyes open.

"How on earth did you..."

Charles lips were pursed "Someone sealed them in a bag. I saw them throw it from their car into a flood gulley on the side of the road."

He doesn't give any more information than that. Just scoops the animals up, blanket and all, and moves with quick steps toward the house at a trot. Forehead wrinkling up tightly as he does so.

"Can I help?" Erik finally questions, for lack of anything better to say.

Its probably pointless to ask...or rather probably pointless to try and help the creatures at all. They're so small and no doubt in serious shock from what had happened. But he knows better than to say that to Charles just from the look on his face.

"I've actually just contacted Raven. She's going to heat some towels in the dryer and bring them into the kitchen. Until then I figure we're better off to try and warm them up gently - some lukewarm water in the kitchen sink." One of the kittens lets out a mewl, it's eyes opening just a crack, paws scrabbling in protest of the way its bed is shifting again without its desire or consent.

"There now, little one." Charles murmurs. "You're safe, at least for the time being."

The kitten seems ill convinced, considering the way it tries to squirm out of the pile of its still unconscious brothers and sisters. It manages to get as far as the crook of Charles' elbow, tiny claws reaching out to pull it upward toward the brunette's still sodden jacket shoulder when Erik reaches out and plucks it up, arguably to keep it from falling.

"Easy, Trouble." He murmurs. "Like he said, for now at least, you're among friends."

The kitten's only response to the assurance is to pee all over his hand.

Oh, oh!

Charles's anger and Erik's instantly on board and of course one of them is Trouble! What a lovely mix of heart-breaking and heart-warming, poor baby kittens :(((

You said nonlethal, right? That means that one of the kittens didn't actually die from hypothermia, right? Charles just thought that one might have?

Sorry to be all pushy there - I just desperately wanted reassurance that the fictitious kitten didn't die. Good Lord, I hate that people can be such callous jerks to helpless animals. And other people.

But...I like that Charles helps kittens? And I like how adorable and tiny they are and how the active kitten pees on Erik's hand. Aww!

As Charles said...probably, as opposed to for certain.
