Somehow, it does not alarm or threaten him; it doesn't make him suddenly want to tear the world asunder with his fear of its differences and his fear of himself.

Like all things presumed innocent, however, it eventually becomes not, but if Alex's touch lingers, the pads of his fingertips sliding over the inside of Armando's palm, if he leans into a push a little too much, Armando never says. He used to start, just a little, but he is a creature of adaptation, and after a few more 'accidental' brushes, he learns to imitate and reciprocate. Alex begins to wonder if solitary confinement is the very thing that makes him ( ... )

“Why'd you change back?” he hears himself say, voice low and rough.

Armando rolls one shoulder in a shrug. The slight movement takes Alex's hand with it, but it is slow and pronounced. He isn't trying to loosen the grip; he's trying not to lose it. “I thought I'd adapt,” he answers.

-----
Armando turns to face him and Alex's stomach gives a flip. Armando can't, he wouldn't jump ship now, he reasons, but his heart only stops stuttering when the playful punch Armando pushes at his stomach, the one he's trying to pass off as a goodbye, moves a little too high on his torso. His index finger nudges out, leaving the fist, and Armando bumps his knuckle between Alex's ribs pointedly, right where all his power is collected. Suddenly, Alex understands. He looks up only to confirm something he already knows ( ... )

The first section is just understated enough towards the end to be perfect - especially "I thought I'd adapt - and it's flat-out heartbreaking. Also, I love the little details, and the hints about their backstory that you have set up.
