Fill: Restlessly in My Mind 5/?

Charles unfairly wishes, sometimes, that he felt for Moira what he feels for Erik - even if it weren't to be requited, he wouldn't have to be so careful. He keeps her at a distance because he can't. Appetite suddenly gone, he smiles vaguely at her and rises. “I'm going to step outside for a bit. I'll see you later,” he says and quickly retreats, tossing what's left of his lunch on his way out to the smoking patio.
The acrid, clawing smell of smoke doesn't fully detract from the simple enjoyment of being outside. He passes by other classmates who barely spare him a glance as he walks towards one of the farther edges. Leaning forward, he folds his arms to rest upon the railing. He tries to think of nothing, but he thinks of Erik, to the sharp, severe expression that tears apart the carefully crafted defenses Charles has woven for himself. That he draws forth Erik's ire isn't anything new, but there is a different quality to it this time, which Charles can't quite pinpoint. Even cautious, he doubts that it's as obvious to anyone else as it is to him.
As if called, Erik, unexpectedly alone, enters Charles peripheral vision. Charles remains still, aware of the space his body occupies, made awkward. His fingers twitch and he checks the face of his watch, though the inexorable pull of Erik does not relent. The bell heralds the end of lunch, but Erik does not leave and instead lights a cigarette. Charles turns toward him. “Did you want something?” he asks Erik, who is within earshot, but not close enough to be connected to Charles until the question.
Erik brings the cigarette to his lips and doesn't immediately answer. He exhales a line of smoke. “From you? Absolutely nothing,” he says carelessly, but instinct tells Charles it's a lie.
“Then why are you following me?” Charles asks before he can think better of the accusation.
“Don't flatter yourself,” Erik sneers. “Just run along to class and be the perfect little student you always are.”
Charles knows he's being baited. He knows - for that matter, he's brushed aside far worse - and yet. “I'm not one of your underlings you can just order around,” he snaps.
Erik glares at him, flicking ash off the end of his cigarette. “You're so fucking two-faced, Xavier. You have this nice and polite front for everyone, but it's like you think you're above anything baser, better than them.”
“I do not think that,” Charles protests, despite the fact it's the beginning of a schoolyard argument at best. He has long learned how to master his anger, how to temper it with calm, but with the range of emotions Erik stirs within him, this is the safest to hold.
“You sure as hell act like you do,” Erik says. He closes the distance between them and while this time there is ample space for Charles to escape, but he doesn't.
“That holds little weight coming from you, considering how much of an arrogant asshole you are,” Charles shoots back.
Erik's gaze darkens and sends a shiver through Charles. Before he says anything, a shouted, “Hey!” interrupts them.
Erik jerks away from Charles and there's an abrupt change in the atmosphere between them. As if released from an invisible hold, Charles stumbles back and his attention is arrested by their civics teacher who is scowling at them both, though his expression relents when he notices it's Erik with Charles. “You boys better get to class.”
Charles nods and hurries inside, not waiting to see what move Erik makes. It effectively ends the argument, but Charles doesn't feel like anything is over.

Hi! I'm so, so sorry I've been so slow! I am still working on the next part to get it where I want it to be. I just wanted to let you know I haven't abandoned it or anything like that and will do my best to update soon.

I don't mean to be pushy (I understand, RL is rude) but is there any chance this will be updated? Maybe soon-ish? This is one of my favorite fics, I just want the boys to be together and happy. And I hope everything is wonderful for you, Nonnie!
