Jesus in Hollywood…Mel Gibson’s Moneymaker at the Movies

By : Heather Martinsen

I saw all of the hype surrounding Mel Gibson’s “ Passion “, and , like everyone, wondered
what it was about. Should we really get our morals from the media? Where else would we
get them, if not from the big screen. Apparently, “ Titanic “ taught us what true love is.
So, I saw Mel’s famous movie. What follows is my humble opinion. First of all, if you are
going to try to be biblically accurate by having the actors speak Aramaic, why not go all
the way and not make them as white as everyone in my suburban hometown? If people are
bothered by the idea of a dark Jesus, then what are they believing in? Also, it seems so evil
and strange that people gather around to watch a man crucified, but public execution was a
spectacle until only the mid 1700’s. And wasn’t Timothy McVeigh’s execution televised?
The message of “ The Passion “ was what? That Jesus was executed in a horrible, painful way and you should feel guilty and pray more because of a bloody film you saw at the theater while shoving popcorn down your throat. I don’t understand. I don’t like that a teeny-bopper flick and a story about the death of Jesus Christ are both shown on the same screen. Jesus is not a movie star. He was a humble man who was crucified. What if someone would have stopped it? What if his disciples would have followed him? Would they all have been crucified? How is Satan manifested today? Is he a pale guy who wears all black because we know that is not true. Who is Satan today? Is a he a CEO of a company who so consumed with greed that he works 60 hours a week or is that just a successful man? If I sold everything I had, gave it to the poor, studied the Bible everyday, and died of starvation, no one would call me a success. People would say I was crazy. We don’t need a history lesson. We have heard the story many times already. We need to know what we can do today, because everyone I see just leaves the theater and goes to bed.
