People in the 20th Century became tired of sap (romantic music.) They started to
experiment. Another form of music called Expressionism was created.
Arnold Schoenberg developed a new genre; Atonal or music with no home key. Also
created was 12 tone writing. A composer had to use all 12 notes before repeating a
single note again. This gave the music a more mathmatical sound. It was more
of a composing exercise than actual music.
The Moonfleck
Composed of stock characters, Pierrot is a Clown. The text is based off of a collection
of songs from Pierrot Lunaire. There are 21 texts (in German,) arranged to 3 groups
of 7. A female recites the song. There is a chamber music ensemble with 5 players,
but 7 instruments.
use of Sprechstimme or speakvoice. Klangfarben Melodie means Sound, colors, and
melody. Each note is taken by a different instrument, so it sounds very random.
The story of the moonfleck: A clown at night, see's a white spot on his coat.
He rubs at it, but it won't go away! He becomes frustrated.
Song Cycle
Use of sprechstimme against fast, dissonant accompaniment.
Complex contrapunctal refrain (on italic words "Einen weissen Fleck").
Flickering effects created by instruments, playing independently from vocal part.
