ROCKPILE On the Road
-David & Michael journey to Los Angeles, Albuquerque, New Orleans, Washington
DC, New York, Chicago, & St. Louis, to perform poetry & prose with local
musicians in each city. Interviews & conversations take place before the
performances with the local musicians which will become part of the "on the road
ROCKPILE Journal" as it grows from city to city & with each performance.
Everything will be documented through text, video &audio to bring back to San
Francisco, at the end of the tour, where poets, songwriters, & musicians of the
Bay Area will gather in the troubadour tradition of the past, to share, through
poetry & song, the history & story of the ROCKPILE journey as a final grand
performance.
Several local poets & musicians from the St. Louis-Metropolitan area have been
invited to participate in the event. St. Louis's leading performance poets will
join featured guests David
Meltzer & Michael Rothenberg.
WORD in Motion Warrior Poets: Shirley LeFlore, Michael Castro, K. Curtis Lyle, Maria
Guadalupe-Massey will collaborate with the Rockpile. Also celebrated St. Louis poets and performers: Jason and the Beast, Sean Arnold, Howard Schwartz & Philip
Gounis will all read selections of their own works, accompanied by music from
David Jackson, Dave Black & the Bob Malone Band. ROCKPILE crew member Terri
Carrión will also perform.
ROCKPILE is a unified effort between noted San Francisco Beat poet David Meltzer
& Beat editor Michael Rothenberg, who created the tour in hopes of maintaining
the Beat tradition of cooperative creativity. In each of the cities, local
poets & musicians help build the pile.
ROCKPILE is a collaboration between David Meltzer, poet, musician, &
essayist, & Michael Rothenberg, poet & editor of Big Bridge Press, which will
serve to educate, preserve, & create a history of collaboration between
musicians & writers. It will help to reinforce the tradition of the troubadour
of all generations, central to the cultural upheaval & identity politics that
reawakened poets, artists, musicians, & songwriters in the mid-1960s & 1970s.
David Meltzer, author of more than thirty books of poetry, fiction, & essays, as
well as editor of several anthologies including Birth & Death, was raised in
Brooklyn during the War years & performed on radio & early TV on the "Horn &
Hardart Children's Hour". Exiled to L.A. at 16, he enrolled in an ongoing
academy w/ artists Wallace Berman & George Herms. He migrated to San Francisco
in l957 & became an important figure in the San Francisco Renaissance & appeared
in Donald Allen's "The New American Poetry" a seminal work of the Beat era.
"Beat Thing" a book length, poetic journal, published by La Alameda Press in
2004, won the Josephine Miles PEN Award in 2005. His books "Reading Jazz"
"Writing Jazz" & "No Eyes, Lester Young" all reflect his deep connection &
dedication to music throughout his career. His complete publication history is

a magazine devoted to music. Most recently, David Meltzer: Poetry with Jazz

clips, excerpts of the journal, & audio files of interviews and more.
