(re-cap of first winter hike in ADKs, dec 2004)

met Neal for the first time at Chapel Pond at 630. first impression - very serious.
started hiking in towards the east dix slide, and set up camp at 10 or so in between two creeks.
hiked up the slide, which is always a good hike. at lunch on top. started to get really cold...this is my first real winter hike. got moving towards south dix, but i suddenly lost a lot of my energy and told neal i wanted to go back to the campsite. felt like a weak idiot....
camped and got to know neal a little better...nice guy for sure. full of knowledge and stories.
got up in the morning and headed towards the east slide on Dix. pretty steep slide, started hiking it and had an awesome time. beautiful day, took some great pictures. got on top of dix at around 11 i guess. then started over to hough. my hip flexor is strained pretty bad at this point, i think i hurt it when i was stepping over a log with snowshoes on when we were breaking trail up hough. good time on top of hough, too, though.
hiking back down to pack up camp i was losing energy again. winter hiking is really damn hard! also first time on a mountain with snowshoes...navigating took some getting used to. packed up camp and started heading out as it was getting dark. fell through the ice of one of the creeks when crossing them to get back to the car. for the last half hour i hiked out with a quick pace with a sopping right foot. pretty happy to see my car and fresh clothes. thanked neal (and said bye to eric, met him at one point during this hike). drove home, wooo
