That post you made got me thinking that maybe I needed to post something like this to clarify where most animal rights activists stand.

And I told you, it seems like if I joined SECS and PEACE all that would happen is that I would end up frustrated, on the computer too much and ending up feeling very tense and upset. I don't like debating, because most people are resistant to the stuff I believe in because they feel threatened by it. Some days I can handle bringing on that stuff and some days I can't. If it comes up in person I will talk about it, but it's usually not a pleasant experience. No matter how calm and cool I try to be with a person, 90% of the time they blow up at me and get VERY confrontational because they're being defensive and making shit about THEM/about their convenience- like the animal rights stuff, it's about the animals and giving all the facts to help make people make informed choices and be "in the know" about the things that happen... however, Joe Schmoe flips the fuck out and is angry because he LOVES his steak and how dare anyone suggest that it's not cool to eat steak... a simple pleasure for him that is eaten in a short time, digested and shit out of him, that has a whole story of cruelty and possible health problems tied to it. Most people don't even want to know what happens, they just want to blindly do everything they'd normally do, many even admitting to me they can't face the truth and don't want to face the truth because they don't want to change their life and know they would if they were open to the information. "I can't watch animal cruelty or animal slaughter, I'll cry and feel horrible." Hmmm, there must be a problem then, if you think it's gonna make you cry and feel horrible. HOWEVER, I do have some friends who have decided to become vegetarians or vegans on their own, which is great. They sought out the information and were open to it. I'm even happy if someone cuts out ONE meat from their diet, which shouldn't be too difficult and would at least help a LITTLE and probably improve the person's health anyway. Unfortunately, Joe Schmoe the average guy just wants to eat his fucking meat and not care about the environment either, damn those tree huggers... oh I'm sorry Joe Schmoe, didn't want to inconvenience you with reality- I hope your great grandchildren won't have to wear breathing masks to school everyday because pollution is so horrid by their time, or that global warming doesn't kill them all. Didnt mean to interrupt your tv dinner there, Joe Schmoe.

I sometimes find it hard to be so kind and open to others in regards to this issue of animal rights in particular(though I force myself to do it anyway) because it's different from a lot of other issues. Say you're into country music (hypothetically) and I'm into goth music- just a matter of personal preference, there's no suffering or death tied to it. No animals had to walk in their own feces up to their knees, have their horns ripped out of their heads or be castrated with no anasthetic, etc. to make that country music cd possible. No animals were freezing in a truck so much that they died from it and became stuck to the walls of the truck, having to have their bodies pried off of the wall, to bring you that country music cd. On most things I am all about personal preference and "to each his/her own" but when choices people make support the abuse of animals, especially WITHOUT being open to the facts and footage to see the WHOLE picture and not just the beef on their plate, it realy really upsets me. It also upsets me when people are uncaring about the environment (which is also tied in with animal rights). The environment is a serious issue and most people roll their eyes when people try to protect forests or oceans. What the fuck is wrong with this world when it's seen as OBNOXIOUS to care about the fucking planet!?

SEE?!? That, THAT RIGHT THERE is why you should join. Expressing those kind of points of views to other people. It says up front in the profile (and I'm paraphrasing, here): "This is a community for the open minded, well read, and those ready to discuss any and all controversial topics at any moment." You're practically BEGGING for controversy, and it's PERFECT for discussion. What's better is that I'm the moderator and if there were those that weren't actually discussing the topic at hand and y'know, just ripping on you and bitching and whining and things like that? I can ban them.

BUT. . .
I can't make you do anything you don't wanna do.

Eh, not so much begging for controversy, as responding TO controvery with truth/information. :P

Maybe I will stop by there on a random day when I feel up to it.

*hugs*

It doesn't even have a full page of entries. Of the entries ON the page, 6 out of the 8 are mine. I'll tell ya what the problem is, is that I make a post in S&P, and then I link to it in my OWN journal, see? But there are so many people who don't like to READ, who don't like to THINK, who don't like to use their fucking BRAINS. They want everything done FOR THEM. If the internet doesn't hand it to them on a silver fucking platter, they don't want it.

Yea, it's the same reason why people will generally scroll right past something unless there's a bright and shiney picture to grab their attention. When people post photos in communities and START it with a cut, no preview pic THEN a cut, they're screwed. Most people won't bother to click unless you entice them. Humans are weird. :P
