Author´s note: Here comes the angst. This took me two weeks to update, I know. I would say I´m sorry but I am really not, not this time. There´s a lot going on around here and angst really fits right now. I´ll give you guys all a free box of tissues. This chapter is way longer than all the others though, and I hope that makes up for the waiting. Enjoy! =)

Chapter 1-11

Lindsay loved her costume, it felt amazing to dress up again for something, even though it wasn´t an actual show.

The sun was shining brightly as they made their way towards Times Square, already getting looks from people. Most of them were tourists, people who were being in New York for the first time, because real New Yorker were long used to a sight like that.

Which didn´t mean that some of them didn´t turn around or casted a few glances, Lindsay and Derek were both looking pretty handsome after all.

Lindsay had the biggest smile on her face and excitedly grabbed a few flyers from Derek.

“This is gonna be fun!” she said. “But we have to take a picture first!”

Derek smiled at her as Lindsay pulled her phone out and turned the camera mode on.

He slid his arm around her waist and pulled her close just as Lindsay said “Cheese!”

Click.

Marissa was spread out across her friends´ bed while Joanne was sitting in a chair, eyeing her friend carefully.

“She´s really sweet, I think. And also great to work with.”

The phrase hung in the air for a while and Joanne couldn´t help but smile a little at Marissa who was, apparently, trying to stare a hole into the ceiling.

“And you like her.”

Marissa finally moved, just to bury her face in her hands. “Of course I like her, she´s my best friend!” she mumbled.

“That´s not what I meant and we both know that.” Joanne stated and Marissa groaned, rolling over and resting her chin in her hands.

“Come on, you said that you almost kissed!”

“Yeah, almost. And I probably imagined that as well! I mean she´s my best friend!”

Joanne smiled and walked over to her bed, sitting down next to Marissa.

“Like people don´t fall in love with their best friends every day.”

Marissa sighed and let her head drop onto the mattress. Her thoughts wandered off to Damian and Cam, who had been best friends since the Glee Project as well and were now finally a couple. But with them, somehow everyone had expected it to turn out this way. Nobody had ever seen more than a friendship between her and Lindsay, not even Marissa herself.

Until that day I felt like sweeping you off your feet at the airport, when we fell asleep together in my bed and on the couch, when we sang together on that stage and that day I almost kissed you.

The beeping of her phone pulled Marissa back into reality and she raised her head.

“You should tell her, you know.” Joanne said and nudged Marissa slightly at the shoulder, while the other girl grabbed her bag to look for her phone.

“Yeah right, and make a complete fool out of myself.” She sighed and looked down at her phone. A smile was tugging at the corner of her lips when she saw that the message was from Lindsay. But as quickly as it had appeared her smiled faded when she opened the message and a picture popped up on her screen.

It showed Lindsay and Derek, all dressed up and it had But, oh, it´s heaven, Nowadays ;D written under it.

Marissa tried really hard to keep her composure, but there was an unpleasant feeling curling up in the pit of her stomach and she was pretty sure that her fading smile had already given her away.

“Are you all right?” it promptly came from Joanne and Marissa handed her the phone.

“Just look, I mean. It doesn´t matter if she likes him or not, if he´s number 2 or 3 or 10 on her list, he´ll always be higher than be because he´s a boy.”

Joanne crooked her head to the side. “Did you just rephrase and quote Glee back at me?”

Marissa looked up at her friend and sighed. “I thought you might have forgotten about season one by now.”

Joanne let out a small laugh. “No chance. But I really think your chances might not be as bad as you think they are. I don´t only see the way you look at her, you know, but also the way she looks back at you.”

A gleam of hope flared up in Marissa´s eyes, but it had no chance against that very persistent and unpleasant feeling in her stomach.

She was jealous of Derek, jealous of a guy she hadn´t even met.

And the worst thing about that was the sudden, and now undeniable, truth that she was, in fact, in love with her best friend.

“Oh shit.”

Lindsay and Derek had spent two hours handing out flyers and taking pictures with various people. They even had a little sing along with some tourists and Lindsay was practically bouncing off the walls. She knew it was nothing big, but it felt so good to finally be out there again, feel the buzz of this wonderful city. LA was different, and Long Island was nice and calm, but Lindsay felt like she needed this, she hadn´t felt this alive in a long time.

She handed out her last flyer to an elderly woman and made her way back to Derek, who was in the middle of taking pictures with a group of girls.

She smiled at him brightly and he returned it once the girls were gone.

“That was amazing!” she practically beamed at him and Derek couldn´t stop smiling. Lindsay wanted to say something else, about how this day had been a lot of fun so far, but she was cut off by Derek.

“Move in with me.” he said, still smiling.

“W…what?” Lindsay was taken aback and the smile on her face faded into a look of astonishment.

“Move in with me! I have an apartment right here in the city and a spare room, it would be so much easier with all the jobs you will get!”

He was still smiling at her and Lindsay was actually stunned. That was something she hadn´t expected at all. Of course it would be great to live in the city, but even though Derek seemed like a genuinely nice guy, she didn´t really know him and she had had a job on Long Island, and then there was Marissa.

“I mean Long Island is a nice place.” Derek continued. “But it takes quite a while to get to the city and if Ashley calls with an urgent job it would be much easier for you to get there!”

He´s right about that. Lindsay thought. But I can´t just pack my bags and leave Marissa, her parents are being so nice about me staying there. And I barely know him…

Well, she definitely liked him and if she had gotten to New York without having a place to stay she would have gone for flat share, where she wouldn´t have known anyone at all. In terms of that Derek was definitely a better option.

“Derek, I…”

“You don´t have to say yes now, just think about it for a while!” he gave her a wink and Lindsay instinctively returned it with a smile. There was something about Derek, something that was very intriguing.

“How about we grab some coffee after this?” he then suggested and Lindsay found herself nodding the very moment he had asked.

Coffee was nice, but the whole way back on the train and to Marissa´s house, Lindsay couldn´t stop thinking about Derek´s offer.

He had sounded so honest and happy, like he really wanted to help her and have her around. One moment it sounded like a great idea but in the next she was judging herself for even considering it.

She didn´t have much time to think about it anymore when she entered the house, because Marissa came running towards her, a big smile on her face.

“Oh my God guess who called!” she was a little short on breath and Lindsay couldn´t help but smile.

“I have no idea.” She said honestly while kicking off her shoes.

“Ryan Murphy himself! He said he heard from Damian that we were going to see Wicked on Friday and since he still has some connections he´s got us a backstage tour before the show!”

Now Marissa was beaming and Lindsay´s face almost fell off. “What? Wow! You mean like, we´re gonna go on the stage and stuff?!”

Marissa nodded rapidly and was almost jumping up and down.

“That´s so awesome!!”

Lindsay literally felt like bursting out into a song something along that line, because she was gonna visit the Gershwin theatre and be able to walk on that stage. She would have to call Damian later and thank him.

Marissa smiled again, grabbing Lindsay by the hand and dragging her off into the kitchen.

“So since we´ve got that cleared up, what do you want for dinner? Mom´s at work and Dad´s out for dinner with his colleagues, so it´s just us!”

They ended up having Spaghetti, it had sort of become their thing. Marissa was smiling at Lindsay over the table and trying to control her rapidly accelerating heartbeat.

Maybe Joanne was right, she needed to tell Lindsay about her feelings, but what about rejection? She couldn´t even handle the thought of it, or the thought of maybe losing her best friend in the process. Lindsay was one of the most important people in Marissa´s life and she couldn´t imagine one second without the other girl.

She took a deep breath and finally opened her mouth, when the sound of Lindsay´s phone cut her off.

“Yeah? Oh hey Derek!” Lindsay smiled immediately and nodded over to Marissa, who had frozen in her movements and was just staring, trying desperately to get rid of off that stupid feeling she´s had earlier that day.

“Oh my God are you serious?” Lindsay suddenly bursted out and Marissa was finally able to move again. “That´s amazing Derek! Oh my God, tell me how you got in! I mean wow!”

Lindsay had gotten up from her chair and was moving towards the living room, giving Marissa a silent Be right back!

Marissa just nodded in resignation.

Be right back turned into half an hour and the food was long cold when Lindsay returned, still a big smile on her face.

“Sorry, that was Derek. Guess what, he got into the Wicked ensemble, isn´t that awesome?”

Marissa bit her lip and resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

“Wonderful.” She finally managed but couldn´t quite get the sarcasm out of her voice.

“Is there something wrong?”

“No, absolutely nothing.” Marissa picked up the fork and looked down at her plate. Well, this was a little awkward.

“Yeah, it´s amazing! I hope I´ll get jobs as amazing as this! Do you know what? He asked me to move in with him earlier, because it´s closer to the agency and I could be there faster if they had jobs for me.”

Marissa felt her heart drop to her stomach and she almost let the fork slip from her hand.

“What…what did you say?” her voice was cracking slightly and she tried her best to keep a straight face.

“Nothing, he said I could think about it.”

There was a short silence until Marissa trusted her voice enough to speak. “And…are you thinking about it?”

She was expecting Lindsay to say no. No, she was hoping the other girl would say no.

“I don´t know, maybe. Derek is a nice guy you know.” The words had slipped from Lindsay´s mouth without even thinking about it and the sound of the fork dropping from Marissa´s hand startled her. Lindsay looked up and saw Marissa´s face, a face that was suddenly very pale.

Marissa felt something inside herself shatter in time with the fork dropping onto the table.

Oh.

Lindsay liked Derek. Lindsay wanted to move into the city. Lindsay didn´t care about her.

Marissa wouldn´t cry, no. After Jeremy, she had sworn to herself that no person was worth her tears, that no one would break her heart ever again.

“Marissa, are you all right?” Lindsay asked with a little concern in her voice.

“I´m fine, you can go if you want to. It´s not like anything is holding you here.”

“What?”

“You obviously care more about a boy you´ve just met than about me. You leave me here and talk to him for such a long time that the food gets cold, your favorite food I just cooked for you.” Marissa knew that half the stuff she was saying was probably totally irrational and not making any sense, but she couldn´t stop.

“What? Marissa what are you talking about?” Lindsay seemed rather confused and got up from her chair to get over to her best friend. She reached out her arm, but Marissa flinched away from her touch.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Lindsay asked, seeming a little angry and even more irritated.

“What is wrong with me?” Marissa didn´t know why she was suddenly yelling, but it was like she couldn´t control herself anymore. “You care more about him than you care about me, which is fine you know, I don´t care about you either. I thought having you here was nice but I don´t need anyone that doesn´t care where he lives and just comes here to stay for a few days and then runs off with some stupid, arrogant guy. Go ahead and live your dream in New York City, but he won´t make you happy, you´ll see! He´s just an idiotic prick!”

Marissa was panting by the end of her rant and then realization of what she had just said hit her. She was looking at Lindsay, the hurt clearly visible in the other girl´s eyes, and Marissa felt her own heart ache.

“Linds…” she whispered, but it was barely audible.

“I don´t know what the fuck you´re talking about, but it´s clear you don´t care about me anymore, I get it.”

Marissa wanted to say that it wasn´t what she had meant, but the words coming out of her mouth were completely different ones.
“Well go and live with Derek then, I´m sure he can take care of you, I´m sure he´s a great carer!”

Marissa didn´t recognize her own words. She knew that she was hurting Lindsay, and she didn´t want to. It was the last thing on earth she wanted, to hurt the girl she loved, but she couldn´t help it.

“You know what? I´ll do that. I´ll go and live with him!”

There was a long silence when they just stared at each other, both with tears prickling in the corners of their eyes. Marissa wanted to say something, apologize for being so stupid, but she didn´t know what could ever make amends for what she had just said, and she was pretty sure she would choke on her own voice anyway.

Without any words, Lindsay suddenly turned around and ran upstairs.

What had just happened?

This can´t be real. She thought but the pain in her chest and the burning in her eyes were so real and so there, that she couldn´t ignore them. She grabbed her clothes and threw them into her suitcase. She didn´t care if they were folded or not, it took her only a minute to gather all her stuff and she stopped for a moment, taking a look around.

For the last few days she had felt at home here, almost more at home than she had felt anywhere else in her entire life. But now she had packed her stuff in less than a minute, there was nothing here anymore that reminded her of the word home.

Lindsay drew in a shaky breath, trying to hold back the tears. She grabbed her suitcase and walked back downstairs. Her eyes wandered around the room, finding Marissa still standing where she had left her in the kitchen.

She was looking for something, anything, in the other girl´s eyes that would stop her, but there was nothing. Marissa´s eyes seemed empty and cold, Lindsay had never seen her like that and suddenly she felt something inside her break.

“I…I…” she started but then cut off. There was nothing she could say. Instead Lindsay just turned around and walked out the door, letting it fall shut behind her.
