Sometimes the rule should never be broken as in the case of khaki pants, where black sock with a black shoe is just way too much contrast.
Plus, matching your sock to your trouser helps your shoe stand out, which is always a good thing (so long as you have shoes that are worth standing out!)
Casual wear is a different ballgame. If I'm wearing black dress shoes with jeans I always go with black or other-colored socks, sometimes even a snazzy red pair I got from the Gap.
...you do know that men are supposed to match dress socks to shoes and belt color, not slacks, right?
