I'm Ashkenazi also :) My mom's parents came to NY from Russia (the area they are from is actually Ukraine in present day, but when they left, it was all part of Russia). I'm also in love with Israel. I've been there three times now, most recently this past summer when my husband and I went there to pray for children. Seems our prayers were heard! We both really want to learn Hebrew as well. I know a little. I was married previously to an Israeli, but he didn't have the patience to teach me, so I just picked up as much as I could. My husband and I look forward to going back to Israel after our daughter is born.
Yay for Ashkenazi Jews! My grandmother on my dad's side I learned recently was actually from Ukraine - but when my grandmother was living it was all Russia so my dad told me that she was from Russia.
That is awesome that you took your children to pray in Israel! I hope one day when I have children I will take my children to Israel as well.
Hebrew is such a wonderful language - if you ever have Hebrew questions, let me know!
She's due June 23rd :) This is our first. We went through a year of fertility treatments after the frustrating diagnosis of "unexplained infertility," which basically just means we're completely healthy and they couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. After three failed IUIs, two cycles of IVF and a miscarriage, we decided to go to Israel to pray for children, and less than a month after returning home, I got pregnant the old-fashioned way, which feels very much like a miracle.
What is "Ashkenazi" mean? Is it a denomination of Judaism or is it something else? (Sorry, I don't know much about Judaism...even if I have a few relatives that are)
I come from a land where we scream the words "O" and "Red" when singing the Star Spangled Banner; a land of history, Old Bay, and Crabs. Same here :) I'm a proud Marylander
Ashkenazi refers to Jewish people of Central or Eastern European descent (Germany, Poland, Hungary, Russia, etc). It is typically contrasted with Spharadic Jews who are Jewish people of Spanish, Portuguese, or Middle Eastern descent (also includes African Jews).
