God would never hurt us like that, not if we were being good fans. We will be better fans.
Ah, yes, the theodicy of fandom. "If Joss is good, then why is there Centaur!Dawn?" "Because of free will." "Uh... free will?" "Yes. Jeanty's willingness to work for free."

Best theological explanation anyone's provided for me yet! Thank you!
I've avoided reading the S8 comics so far, and live in denial, trying to turn 'theodicy' into 'The Odyssey of Fandom' (eventually, we get back home, after overcoming all the perils sent our way by angry or careless gods).

Hmmm... "Joss Whedon"... "Poseidon"... Gotta be a coincidence that they sound similar, right?
I got onto, "I'm not giving Dark Horse another penny", pretty early on, after Buffy killed Dark Willow for me.
I was disinterested in Angel: After the Fall when he became human. Maybe if I wear my read shoes, pat three times and snap my fingers they will disappear.
I think with all the contraversy the new comics are causing, it won't be going away anytime soon.
I actually like the Angel comics a lot better. I don't have as much beef with real Angels and werecreatures as I do with Centaur!Dawn and Sparkly!Angel.
I'd been hoping, hoping, hopiiiiig, up until he said on the record somewhere that he'd scrap everything in the comics if he could get a Buffy movie going and show us his true direction.
That chipped away at a looooot of my faith in his integrity; and even more at my ability to take these comics seriously. Like, they're cracky character art, not canon.
ITA 100% with everything you said. Though honestly, I didn't think he had much integrity to begin with. Early on in the shows, he said he would sacrifice characterization to tell a good story. And that was like okay then, well F.U. too then. LOL
I mean, not that I haven't seen it happen on his shows, but going by how fandom gushed about him I always thought, well then clearly that all's not by him. All the more so since that's something I can't "forgive" no matter how much I'll like your show otherwise. If you think a story's good but you can't actually build it around your characters as they are, either the story isn't what you think it is or you're not really as good a writer as you think you are. (See also, why Heroes and I broke up.)
Ah, I feel so much better now about being in the well F.U. too then camp. ;P
I will see if I can find the interview. It used to be online. I will have to GoogleFu.
I think the fandom gives him far too much credit. They fail to realize that a lot of the characters weren't his idea in the first place. James Marsters even just confirmed this:
"He really wanted the vampires to be ugly when they were vampires and very quickly dead," reveals Marsters. "He was talked into the character of Angel by David Greenwalt, his writing partner. He fought it. I don't think he was too excited about it but he allowed David [Boreanaz] to do it, and the character just took off to the clouds. I think that he always remembered that he was only going to allow one Angel-like character on the show and that all the other vampires were going to remain in some way hideous.http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2010/03/buffy-star-james-marsters-talks-twilight-reprising-spike.html... )

LOL Unfortunately, I have a feeling fans on Stage 1 are saying that exact thing. :)
