Preferences - Chapter 1

May 05, 2009 17:48

Ok, this is my first YooSu fic! I've never written one before but I'm going to try my best to make this a good one! ^____^ I got the inspiration for Junsu's character from a short story I had to read for English this year called "Bartelby, the Scrivener".

Basic summary: Yoochun transfers to a new college and winds up with a very strange roommate.
Rating: PG13 for now. I'm not sure I have the confidence to write anything more graphic yet. ^^' lol.

Enjoy!

Chapter 1: Introductions

Yoochun stood behind the Dorm Advisor, remembering the brief conversation they had shared earlier that morning.

“Welcome, Yoochun. I will be your Dorm Advisor this year. My name is -.”

Yoochun had already forgotten the name…he hadn’t really been paying attention. He’d already heard a similar speech from the DA at his last college anyway.

“Before I show you to your room, I feel it’s only fair to warn you that your roommate has had a bit of a history of being…difficult.”

“Difficult?”

“Yes, unfortunately. He’s not loud or violent…and he doesn’t cause trouble…but he’s a bit strange. His roommates last year seemed to have difficulty coping with his odd behavior and eventually all asked to be moved to different rooms. Word spread of his difficult nature so he’s consequently had the dorm to himself since classes started this year.”

“I don’t care who I room with as long as I have a place to stay. I’m sure we’ll get along. What’s his name?”

“Kim Junsu. Are you sure you don’t mind rooming with him?”

“I’ll be fine.”

Yoochun was beginning to wonder if he really would be fine. He and the DA had been outside his new room for almost twenty minutes now, unable to get inside.

“Junsu,” the DA pounded on the door with his fist, his patience wearing thin, “Open the door, please. This is ridiculous.”

Apparently, Junsu had locked the door and now refused to allow anyone in. He also refused to respond to the DA’s pleas, complaints, and even orders.

“Junsu, the least you could do is answer me.” The DA pounded the door again.

“I’d prefer not to,” a calm voice replied from the other side of the door. It didn’t sound at all like someone trying to argue - more like someone stating a fact or commenting on the weather.

“I don’t care if you’d prefer it or not. Open the door.”

“I’d prefer not to,” the voice repeated.

“Do you want me to break the door down?”

After a few minutes of silence, the DA let out a sigh of frustration and massaged his temples. Yoochun reached out and touched the man’s arm.

“I’ll be fine. I’m sure you have other things you need to do, so please don’t worry about me.”

The DA nodded, looking a bit doubtful of Yoochun’s reassurances. “Are you sure?”

Yoochun nodded, smiling. “Yes. I’ll be fine, really.”

The DA smiled back, still looking unsure. “Well…alright. I’ll be in my office if you need me.”

Yoochun waited until the DA was out of sight before knocking gently on the door. “Junsu? My name is Park Yoochun. I just transferred here and…well, I really don’t have anywhere else to stay so please let me in? The Dorm Advisor is gone, if that makes any difference.”

He was answered with silence. Sighing in disappointment, he sat down in front of the door and waited. He was just about to give up when he heard the lock click softly. The door opened a crack. Yoochun seized his chance, picking his bags up and swiftly entering the room. Closing the door behind him, he took a closer look at his new home. There was a small kitchen area to his left and a living room area to his right. At the far end were two doors - one to the bathroom and one to the bedroom. Junsu was already walking toward the bedroom, having barely glanced at Yoochun.

“Thank you for letting me in,” Yoochun smiled as he followed his new roommate. There were two beds, one on each side of the room. Junsu wordlessly sat on one of the beds and occupied himself with reading a textbook. Yoochun set his bags down beside the other bed. My bed now, he thought.

He glanced at Junsu’s book. “What are you reading?”

Junsu offered no response.

“What courses are you taking?”

Junsu turned the page, ignoring him.

“How old are you? What year are you in?” Yoochun’s spirits began to sink as Junsu continued to ignore him.

The silence was shattered as Yoochun’s stomach growled obnoxiously. He noticed Junsu’s lips twitch briefly into a small smirk before they fell back into a neutral position. Yoochun grinned, thankful to see that his stoic new roommate at least had a sense of humor.

Well, thought Yoochun, he is tough to figure out…but having a quiet roommate isn’t the worst thing that could happen to me.
