"Idiot! What are you waiting for?!" Donghae's voice cried out.

Kibum flinched, his shoulders tense and his lower lip trembling. Never had he heard Donghae yell at him like that before. Of course never before had they been in such a dangerous situation.

What had started as an investigation of a burglary scene had ended with a question Kibum could never answer. If only he had gone through the back of the house instead of the front together with his partner Donghae. They had known the chance of the burglar being armed was high, yet they had underestimated the offender's fighting skills and his choice of weapon.

The silver fully automatic machine pistol kept swaying back and forth between the frozen Kibum who stood in the threshold of the kitchen and Donghae who was caught in the burglar's grip. The man's arm was tightly gripped around his partner's neck, making it difficult for Donghae to breath normally and he did all he could to try and stay calm.

What made things even more difficult was the little sobbing girl sitting on one of the chairs at the kitchen table. She was gagged and had her hands tied to the back of her seat. It was shocking to see the burglar had even kidnapped an innocent little girl. This little girl, her life was now in Kibum's hands. The burglar's question repeated itself over and over in his head and it made Kibum tremble visibly.

"Who's it gonna be? The little girl or this guy?!" the man was going to shoot - perhaps even kill - either one of them and he was asking Kibum who would be his victim.

It made his hand tremble as he tried to keep it in the air, his finger on the trigger while pointing the gun at the man holding Donghae. Shooting was an option, but the man kept using his partner as a shield and Kibum couldn't risk shooting Donghae.

"What are you waiting for?!" Donghae cried out once more, his voice now softer because of the grip tightening around his neck.

Kibum shook his head, he knew what Donghae wanted and he knew it was the answer he had to choose in the end. Donghae loved kids yet he had no wife and no children of his own even at this age. Kibum was the same with his work consuming all of his time so all he had were his distant relatives and his CIA partner, Donghae. What would happen if Kibum spoke? Would the man really shoot? Should Kibum try and shoot him? Would Donghae survive?

"Donghae.." Kibum called out his partner's name in misery, not knowing what to do and seeking the other's advice.

However, with the male's name falling of his lips and the burglar's agitation building, Kibum's reaction was seen as the answer everyone had been waiting for. Donghae knew what was going to happen as soon as he watched Kibum's lips pronounce his name. Squeezing his eyes shut, he let out a pleading cry before the man holding him turned him around violently, releasing him and giving him a hard push. It made Donghae tumble back, gasping for air and clutching his throat as he fell down crashing against the kitchen cabins.

Kibum's eyes were on Donghae, his partner hitting his head with a loud bang that was followed by a loud cry of pain. Everything went so quickly yet once the sound of a gun reached Kibum's ears he experienced everything in slow motion. He couldn't move, his eyes glanced to the table where the little girl sat crying and wailing and it pierced his ears.

Suddenly it stopped.

They had underestimated him. The man had clearly done his homework, he knew Kibum and Donghae were close partners, he knew who to grab and who to force to choose, leaving Kibum too unfocused to shoot and it would ensure the man's escape. The little girl was probably randomly kidnapped from the street after school, but in this situation anyone who looked weak and innocent would have made Kibum hesitant. No, any victim would have made it harder. If only there hadn't been a victim.

The burglar had underestimated one of them as well. Donghae, whose eyesight was blurry thanks to his fall, grabbed his gun and aimed the best he could. He shot twice, succeeding in shooting the man's leg and his chest. Almost at the same time, the man and Kibum both fell down to the ground, one groaning and cursing, the other silently crying and dropping his gun. With bloodshot eyes Kibum stared at the lifeless body of the girl he should have saved. The lifeless body of the girl who should be crying in his arms right now.

Kibum could no longer hear what was going on, he wasn't aware of Donghae crawling on the burglar's back and forcing him down until their backup barged in. Two pairs of hands yanked Kibum off the ground and dragged him away, but once he was outside he snapped. His colleagues were met with his violent outburst that consisted out of screaming and crying out loudly. It took four men to take him along to the hospital.

The first time Donghae saw Kibum again after the burglar case - which ended up as a murder case - was after the funeral of the little girl. The family had invited the duo, but Kibum knew not all of them would be happy with his presence and therefore he had chosen to decline the invitation. Donghae had attended the ceremony and had whispered a good bye on behalf of his partner as well. He went to search him right after giving his condolences to the girl's parents, knowing his partner was somewhere near the graveyard.

In the end he found him. Kibum was at the large iron gate, standing in the middle of the opening and looking down at his feet as if hesitating on truly entering the churchyard. The little stones crunched underneath Donghae's feet and it made Kibum raise his head once he heard him nearing. The sun was setting, peeking at them from above the horizon and embracing Kibum's tense form with a soft glow. The sight made Donghae smile. Kibum looked beautiful, even with the red eyes, the dry cut lips and the dark circles underneath his eyes.

They stared at each other with an arm length distance in between them. Donghae wanted to speak, to say something that would sooth and comfort his mentally crushed partner. Kibum shook his head, no words could soothe the pain and guilt he was feeling inside. Yet when Donghae stepped forward and slowly wrapped his arms around his partner's body, Kibum felt a small smile tugging at his lips. He clutched the other's jacket and pressed his face against Donghae's shoulder once tears made their appearance and they cried together.

He felt guilty, that girl shouldn't have died that day. He would never forget the horrible death and the sight of her lifeless body tied and gagged. Kibum kept silent as Donghae rubbed his back, sobbing as much as he was. No matter how much Kibum prayed to God for forgiveness he couldn't help but thank the Lord as well. Donghae was his partner, he was holding him, comforting him and getting comforted. Though Kibum's mind would be haunted for life, at least his heart wasn't broken.
