tiduspoorpants “In your unfamiliar scent, I start to reminiscence. Looking into my gentle eyes, making my heart cry. Even if I try to wipe them off it’s of no use. My heart is running towards you unconditionally. I have decided that I must have y-!” Hyukjae was disturbed during his rap when the light began to flicker on his nightstand.
Quickly he pulled his headphones down, ignoring the vocal in the song that continued while he kept silent. On, off, on, off, again and again. Hyukjae didn’t understand why his lights were behaving strangely lately. It had started a week ago: the light in the bathroom left him cringing in pain as the soap from his hair stung his eyes, hands blindly searching for a towel in the pitch dark. Even after replacing the light bulb it happened again two days ago.
He lived in a rather quiet and peaceful apartment building, his neighbours kept to themselves and so did he. His landlord was an Average Joe and hadn’t mentioned complaints about the circuit from the previous owner. There hadn’t been any complaints. Perhaps that should have made him suspicious, but Hyukjae was a college drop-out with little money and this was the only place he could afford. He wasn’t picky, the place didn’t reek, it looked clean and there was no draft; a 100% improvement compared to the minivan he used to sleep in.
Hyukjae usually ignored the flickering for it only occurred several minutes, but tonight was different. An hour had passed and the lonesome owner sat on the couch in his small living area, eyes closed tightly. He could still see the change behind his eyelids; on, off, on, off. The switch didn’t work, no matter how much he fumbled with it, the flickering continued and it was driving him insane.
“For crying out loud!” Hyukjae yelled angrily and snapped his eyes open, grunting as suddenly the lights went on again and blinded him momentarily.
This had to stop, there had to be something he could do to make it stop. Removing all the light bulbs was not an option, if he got too close to the lamps he’d get blinded and even if his balance was good he could stumble and fall, perhaps break something in the mere second he couldn’t see a damn thing. No, Hyukjae had learned to live a careful life and knew there was always another option no matter what.
Reluctantly he searched for the yellow pages and leaved through the thick book. There had to be an electrician he could afford. His eyes tried to scan over the tiny letters, eyes narrowing more and more as the flickering of the lights challenged him. It felt impossible, whenever the lights went off Hyukjae tried to focus his eyes on the paper where they lingered, but with the light came the adjusting of his eyes and it made him disoriented. He searched for the sentence that he had read last and was able to read four more words before the lights went off once more.
With a curse and a grumble Hyukjae flung the book on the worn out couch, hands covering his eyes to block out the light. He had to get away before it truly drove him insane. Quickly he grabbed his jacket and shoes, putting them on outside where a soft glow lit the hallway of the apartment building. Hyukjae sighed and rubbed his sore eyes, thankful that only his apartment seemed to be haunted.
“Ghosts don’t exist” Hyukjae snorted at the thought and turned around, yelping when coming face to face with an unfamiliar male.
“Boo” the man said with a small grin, a paper bag in his hand and keys in the other.
“W-Who, what, where did you come from?” Hyukjae asked still slightly startled.
“I have no obligation to answer” the other replied and turned to the door opposite Hyukjae’s, key unlocking it.
His neighbour, Hyukjae had never seen him before and felt a little embarrassed. He contemplated on introducing himself, but his eyes caught sight of the flickering light in the other’s apartment.
“Wait!” he called out before the neighbour could close his door.
The stranger quirked an eyebrow at the foot blocking his door and sighed deeply.
“I have flickering lights as well, when did it happen in your apartment?” Hyukjae asked warily.
“I don’t know, it’s just a short circuit or something, I just fix it whenever it happens” Hyukjae’s neighbour whose name was Cho Kyuhyun according to his nameplate spoke casually and stared blankly at him.
“You can fix it? Can you fix mine? It’s driving me nuts” Hyukjae asked with a groan and a pleading look. He’d do anything for the lights to stop, if it’d continue he wouldn’t be able to sleep.
Kyuhyun flicked his tongue, an obvious disapproving sound, but he nodded his head nevertheless. It wouldn’t take long, he told the other as they crossed the hallway, but he was hesitant to enter.
“Well, wait are you waiting for, come in” Hyukjae waved the other over, already standing in the middle of his apartment with a troubled look. Kyuhyun nodded and stepped inside, raising his hand to block out the flickering lights.
“It’s worse here, more frequent” Kyuhyun commented comparing the speed of the flickering to the lights in his own place.
Hyukjae groaned as he bumped his hip against the table while guiding Kyuhyun to the room where it had all begun: the bathroom. The owner closed the lid of the toilet and sat down as the other looked around.
“Everything looks okay. I’ll have to check the wiring to the lights. Sometimes older buildings have a wire size that is a little too small, as is the case in my apartment so it’s highly likely you’re facing the same problem” Kyuhyun explained and looked up at the lights as they stopped flickering.
Hyukjae quirked an eyebrow while looking up; was it fixed just like that? But they hadn’t touched anything! Then as sudden as the lights stopped flickering, they were all switched off, leaving both men in completely darkness.
“Oh great..” Hyukjae muttered as he shifted on the toilet, standing with stretched arms as he tried to navigate himself out of the room.
After one step he jerked his arms back, eyes wide at the strange thing he had felt in the darkness. It wasn’t a wall, wasn’t his shower cabin either and Hyukjae was pretty certain humans didn’t feel so -
Hyukjae’s thoughts were interrupted by a low chuckle that made him shiver. He felt cold, surely the heather didn’t suddenly malfunction. Quickly he wrapped his arms around his quivering body, eyes darting through the darkness in search for any visible object and gasped when a pair of striking blue eyes stared at him.
“K-Kyuhyun?”
“Not quite, but you may call me as you wish for tonight shall be your last” the male’s voice spoke and revealed a set of sharp canines while he smirked.
