Chapter 01 Chapter 02
Such a beautiful day. Ryeowook breathed in deeply and stretched his arms above his head once he arrived outside. His day off, perfect, because he had two flower beds to take care of. The walk to the flower shop went on automatic pilot and the same woman from a few days ago greeted him cheerfully.
"I'd like yellow poppies and cyclamen, please." Ryeowook pointed at the two different flowers and discussed innocently with the employee how many he'd need.
"Sounds like a lovely project you're working on. Will others be allowed to view it once it's done?" the woman asked as she handed Ryeowook his change.
"To be honest I don't know when it will be done. There are still so many flowers left" he replied with a smile.
The woman nodded in understanding and waved him goodbye as Ryeowook struggled to carry all the flowers to the park. It was early and quite crowded, something he disliked the moment he noticed people were staring at him. What was so strange about a guy walking around with heaps of flowers? For all they knew Ryeowook was working for the government to tidy up the old park with some lovely new flowers.
He wasn't wearing a working outfit however and this also noticed the park ranger who stealthily followed him into the bushes. After watching Ryeowook for a while he appeared and pointed a threatening finger to the other who sat kneeled in the dirt with big frightened eyes.
"What do you think you're doing?!" the ranger yelled with a powerful voice that had Ryeowook's heartbeat accelerate.
Quickly Ryeowook grabbed his shovel and raised it, ready to strike but the ranger held out his hands.
"WOAH! Wait, wait, wait!" he yelled and motioned for Ryeowook to lower the gardening tool. "I just want to know if you have legal permission to plant flowers here" he added carefully once Ryeowook looked less dangerous.
"P-Permission?" Ryeowook's voice trembled a little and he dropped the shovel, wiping his hands on his old shirt while looking at the flowers he had yet to put in place. "I need permission to help nature?" he asked quite suddenly with blinking eyes, clearly not seeing the problem unlike the ranger who adjusted his cap.
The man stepped closer with a sigh and looked at the other flowerbed, asking if Ryeowook had been the one who made it. The one in question nodded and fumbled with his hands, wondering what the other was going to do. With a thoughtful look the ranger reached up and played with his philtrum, obviously an unconscious habit. Ryeowook found himself giggling and apologized when the other looked a bit offended.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh at you. You just.. You looked funny, cute even" Ryeowook spoke softly and lowered his head as he shuffled with an uncertain look on his face.
The man looked a bit embarrassed, but laughed it off and that was the sign that told Ryeowook the ranger had lowered his guard. His name was Yesung and he narrowed his eyes faintly at the smaller male.
"Have we met before?" he asked with a small smile.
"Before? I don't think so.. Why are you looking at me like that?" Ryeowook turned away slightly, a rosy colour rising to his cheeks the longer Yesung stared at him.
Yesung blushed deeply and averted his eyes, cussing mentally for staring at the beautiful male like that. As he tried to think of something to say he saw from the corner of his eye how Ryeowook crouched down and continued to plant the flowers in straight lines. He watched him work for a moment and knelt beside the other, smiling while handing him another yellow poppy.
"Need some help?" he asked with bright eyes that made Ryeowook smile. He nodded at the other and silently they filled up the soil until the yellow poppies and cyclamen flowerbeds were done. With Yesung's help it had taken less time and Ryeowook offered to repay him for his help, but the park ranger adjusted his cap saying it was part of his job.
"Though.. Would you like to go on a date with me?" Yesung asked carefully with his confident look morphing into a nervous one. He could clearly hear the thumping of his heart in his ears and hoped Ryeowook would fancy him like he fancied the younger one. At least they both loved nature, they could talk about that during their date or not talk at all if Ryeowook preferred that, Yesung would be content simply staring in a dazed manner all night.
They shared a look that needed no words as Ryeowook grabbed Yesung's hand and intertwined their fingers. Ryeowook felt his heart flutter when a small hand cupped his cheek. He felt nervous, more nervous than he had been in quite some time. He was also a bit frightened that this man would be able to sweep him off his feet with one single kiss. To prevent that from happening Ryeowook shied away before their lips could meet, hiding his face in Yesung's chest.
"I'm sorry" Yesung apologized instantly when Ryeowook refused to remove his face. "I just.. Your lips.. Eh.." Yesung scratched his cheek and felt relieved when he heard a small giggle against his chest. Ryeowook finally revealed his face and Yesung knew love on first sight was not a fairy tale when his heart swelled at the other's soft eyes and shy smile.
That night Ryeowook found himself sharing light kisses with a park ranger on his doorstep. Yesung was different, not demanding at all and completely content with the way their first meeting ended. He continued waving as he walked down the street, nearly colliding with a streetlight that had Ryeowook giggling and calling out to check if the other was okay.
A second date, something Ryeowook hadn't had in such a long time. He felt wonderful as if floating on air and gaped at the beautiful red roses Yesung handed him when he arrived at the door.
"Roses.. You shouldn't have.." Ryeowook lowered his head and inhaled the lovely scent, expression softening and concerning Yesung when he thought to see a sad look in the other's eyes.
"Ah.. you don't like roses, I'm sorry I should have asked firs-" Yesung lowered his head with an awkward look, but Ryeowook quickly interrupted him.
"No! No, I love them!" Ryeowook reassured the other and smiled more cheerfully. "They are the symbol of love, passion and beauty, I feel flattered you bought them while thinking of me" he added and Yesung looked more confident knowing Ryeowook was pleased.
The park ranger nervously shifted on his feet in the little hallway as Ryeowook searched for a vase. He filled it with enough water for the flowers and placed them on the counter. His fingertips softly caressed the red petals of one of the roses and he bit his lip with a hesitant look.
"Ready?" Yesung asked when Ryeowook reappeared.
"Ready!" he replied and once more intertwined their fingers, swaying their hands back and forth.
"Why did you become a park ranger?" Ryeowook asked as the other brought him to the park where they had met and as a true ranger Yesung showed Ryeowook small paths that lead to more secret spots such as Ryeowook's flowerbeds.
"I want to protect the resources of the park, and the people who visit it. I'm not much of people-person, you know?" Yesung laughed a bit and gave Ryeowook's hand a small squeeze. "There are only a few who I can get along with." His voice softened and made the younger one smile.
"I don't talk a lot, as you may have noticed. I like quiet places so I can think with a clear head." The ranger finally stopped at a small log cabin.
He motioned for Ryeowook to wait and got inside. Being curious by nature Ryeowook crept closer to the wooden cabin and pressed his back against it when hearing two voices. One he recognized as Yesung's deep voice, but the other was unfamiliar. Slowly the young male shuffled closer and leaned over to peek inside through the little window.
"Yah, hyung, why are you here? Isn't it your night off?" the man who accompanied Yesung stated with a surprised look.
"Just came in to grab a flashlight in case it might get dark soon tonight" Yesung replied as he rummaged through the drawers of a desk.
"You will be roaming the park for a while? Mind if I join you?"
The other male watched him intentionally, something Ryeowook didn't appreciate. What made the younger one even more on edge was the fact the man was far taller and muscular than he was.
"Actually, Siwon, I'm on a date tonight." Yesung smiled shyly and blushed when Siwon whistled at him with a growing smile.
"That's why you're looking exceptionally fine tonight~" the muscular man commented with a wink and slapped Yesung's bum while the older one was still leaning down in search of a flashlight.
"S-Siwon!" Yesung straightened immediately with his face tomato red and his hands protecting his bum from the colleague who leaned on him from behind.
Long arms rested in mid air as Siwon leaned on Yesung's shoulder with a small sigh. He muttered something about being jealous and wanting a date as well, he felt lonely and poked Yesung's burning cheek when suggesting they should have a date together if tonight's date wouldn't work out. Yesung's stuttering and lack of trying to get away from Siwon's body made Ryeowook grip the wood surrounding the window.
"S-Sure, fine, he's waiting outside." Yesung finally moved away and reached out for Siwon's belt, snatching the tall male's flashlight and hurrying back out before strong arms could capture him.
"Let me show you something." Yesung tugged Ryeowook closer after a silent walk to a small pond in the middle of the park. Ryeowook stood beside him and tilted his head to the side. The water looked clean and he could spot a few fish, but other than that he had no idea why Yesung had taken him here.
It was starting to get darker and the park ranger used the flashlight to search for something in the water. Ryeowook sighed softly as Yesung started about raising turtles on his own. Fascinating, Ryeowook folded his arms until the ranger asked him to hold the flashlight for him. The younger one obeyed and watched how Yesung knelt at the edge rolling up his sleeves once he was on the ground.
"Could you shine into the water from above for a moment? I'm going to try and catch one." Yesung gave a small smile as Ryeowook shuffled closer, standing behind the older one and pointing the flashlight down.
He watched the back of Yesung's head as the man splashed in the water. Soft curses were the result of failed attempt number five. Then there was a soft thud and a loud splashing, the light disappearing from the flashlight and Yesung's eyes. Only when the splashing stopped and no more bubbles came to the surface did Ryeowook remove his hand from the other's head.
"You're all the same, Yesung."
