Infrared Photography?

I know some of you photogs might be able to help me out, (/prod slave_to_anime) but I've really been wanting to dabble in infrared photography.  I've considered at some point sending my Canon Digital Rebel (300D) in to get converted to infrared only, but as that is the only camera I have at the moment (*HOPEFULLY* might be getting some money towards the 40D as a graduation present) I obviously need a camera that can shoot in visible light as well.  My camera does pass the "remote control" test where you point the remote control and take a picture to test if the infrared light from the remote appears, so I suppose I could put a filter on, but from all indications it doesn't work all that well, you can't see through the lens to compose the photo (so you have to constantly take the, and you need a tripod.  So I suppose the other option would be to convert my point and shoot (Olympus C-750) or buy another camera that is IR sensitive.  Cost is also another issue, since I don't have a ton of money, and really can't afford to spend more then $100 to play around with infrared at the moment.

I just don't know what would be the best route to go about experimenting in infrared.  Any photographers have advice?
